Hi, welcome to this week's instalment of the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Episode 8, from 22:19:

Summary: In Dixing, the Regent sends a smoke message. In Haixing, Shen Wei pours his drunk mentor into car and then finds Zhao Yunlan ill on the kerb. He takes him home in a taxi (where he serves as a pillow), then discovers Zhao Yunlan's disaster apartment (featuring: wine bottles, dirty dishes, THE FRIDGE). During the night, Zhu Jiu finds the pillar with the Mountain-River Awl, but can't approach it. Meanwhile Shen Wei discovers that Zhao Yunlan asked Dixing about him and the Regent is ratting him out. He alters the message. In the morning, Zhao Yunlan wakes up to a tidy flat and Shen Wei sitting next to his bed. He tries to recruit Shen Wei for the SID again, but fails again. Wang Zheng sees a newspaper report about an earthquake in the Hanga mountains, passes out and regains her memory. Da Qing comes to tell Zhao Yunlan and finds Shen Wei there in the early morning. The Sundial begins to glow and resonate with the Awl; Lin Jing traces the source to the mountains.

Shen Wei: "I suggest you eat regular meals. I don't want to find you on the road again."

Zhao Yunlan: "If you want to know whether I eat regular meals, why don't you just join ourSID, and you'll know?"

Shen Wei: "So your SID doesn't need a consultant, it needs a nanny?"

I always notice that when Shen Wei takes off Zhao Yunlan's boots, he accidentally slips one of Zhao Yunlan's socks off his heel and doesn't pull it back up, argh! :p

Episode 8, up to 22:19

Summary
The SID enthusiastically welcomes Guo Changcheng as an official employee, and Lin Jing gives him the fear baton. ♥ Zhao Yunlan arranges to buy some old books and then calls Shen Wei to offer them as a gift, while Zhu Hong and Da Qing gossip about his black-heartedness and obsession with Shen Wei. Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing meet a student in the street to buy the books, then sit around and talk about recruiting Shen Wei to the SID. Zhao Yunlan is openly smitten. ♥ But presenting the gift to Shen Wei does not go as planned: Zhao Yunlan gives a fake provenance for the books, Shen Wei leaves, and Zhao Yunlan slinks off to ~~recover his dignity in private~~ drink tea and talk about new SID premises. A mysterious letter gives Wang Zheng flashbacks. Changcheng and Chu Shuzhi run into Ding Dun in the street juuuust before receiving an APB about him. The Envoy comes to the SID to request help tracking him down, but Da Qing is hesitant to proceed without their fearless leader. Chu Shuzhi sets to work anyway and takes Changcheng with him. Meanwhile, Zhu Jiu murders Ding Dun, whose body the others find and take back to the SID? (Or pass on to the Envoy?) On the university campus that night, Shen Wei confides in Ying Chun while wearing an ascot. Zhu Jiu shows up, and fisticuffs ensue (Ying Chun helps Shen Wei), but Zhu Jiu escapes. Ying Chun points out the dangers in Shen Wei's plan to go after a missing item, but Shen Wei is resolved.

Lin Jing: This is my newest invention. It can transform fear into electricity. The more fear, the more electricity. In other words, I made it especially as the perfect, most powerful weapon you could have.
Guo Changcheng: E...electricity? I'm also afraid of electricity.

When Zhao Yunlan calls Shen Wei about the old books, the original subs say, "What a coincidence! I have a lot of old books," and the VIKI subs say, "You are so lucky as I have some in my home!" while Solo's subs have "As it happens, regarding this, the two of us were brought together by fate." The last is closest to the Chinese subs: 巧了咱俩在这个事上太有缘了 ("What a coincidence! We're so destined to meet on this matter." according to Google Translate).

Zhao Yunlan asks Shen Wei to be an official consultant to the SID, and Shen Wei refuses. Zhao Yunlan accidentally implies he's been in Shen Wei's place before. The next day at the SID, Lin Jing is telling ghost stories when a call comes about a new case: one of the muggers is dead. When the SID review nearby CCTV footage, they don't see much, but rewinding to earlier reveals that Zhao Yunlan met up with Shen Wei in that alley. Zhao Yunlan unconvincingly laughs this off. The "bears" call: Zhu Hong grudgingly conveys a laptop to Shen Wei for a Zoom call with Zhao Yunlan and the others. After Shen Wei's extensive and illustrated lecture on different kinds of bears, Da Qing pipes up to suggest the attacker might be a Youchu; Shen Wei produces a relevant sketch. Zhao Yunlan, Lin Jing and Chu Shuzhi visit the surviving mugger in hospital; he's out of his wits, babbling about a monster. Lin Jing sees the crime scene photos and makes the connection with his favourite web novel.

Episode 6, from 22:44

Summary:

Zhao Yunlan returns to Zhou Weiwei and makes her admit the truth: she switched places with Mirror Girl, and that was who was engaged to Ji Xiaobai. Ji Xiaobai, having confirmed what he already knew, isn't interested in a replacement goldfish. Mirror Girl tells the Envoy about a phrase her father used to repeat.

Then Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing talk about Shen Wei being suspicious, break into his flat, find his file on the SID, and have to hide when Shen Wei arrives. Zhao Yunlan sends a smoke messenger to the Regent, and a banner with a spy camera to Shen Wei. Da Qing teases him about his interest in the Envoy. Shen Wei confronts the uni's chancellor about Li Qian withdrawing, and has a brief conversation with Zhao Yunlan. Zhu Jiu puts a new agent in play. Finally, at night, Shen Wei is mugged by two thugs.

Da Qing: "In this world, two people can be very close, but have never seen each other. But maybe once they've met, they'll see each other every day. Destiny is unpredictable."

Zhao Yunlan: "Damn Fatty, I never knew that you were a poetic cat."

This [photo] is nice as well; pretty outfit. I want to buy one for my girlfriend. Where'd you buy it?

I remember from the early days that fandom had decided Zhao Yunlan was talking about the coat Mirror Girl was wearing in the photo, and had related it to the similar trenchcoat Shen Wei wears in later episodes. And that despite the fact that the English subs - all of them: the original ones and the ones that came later, Solo's and the Viki ones - say "shirt"! Of course the Chinese only says 衣服, clothes, and IIRC this concept originally came from the Chinese side of fandom.

Summary:
During waking hours, the Black-Cloaked Envoy was always at Kunlun’s side, attentive to the point where everyone assumed he meant to take Kunlun for himself. And Kunlun didn’t seem to mind! Didn’t seem to care that the Black-Cloaked Envoy was an icy, intimidating figure, famed for his skill and ruthlessness in battle. Lady Fu You had hinted that the Envoy’s reputation was partly propaganda, but Da Qing still couldn’t imagine curling up cosily to sleep with the masked man. Surely Kunlun wouldn’t want to either! Anyway, it was a simple fact that the new general’s sleeping quarters weren’t big enough for three.

Da Qing had to get there first.

In the mirror, Ji Xiaobai chooses the wrong (human) Weiwei. Spurned (Dixingren) Weiwei threatens to explode them all. The Envoy stops her and takes her away, but not before he and Zhao Yunlan talk privately about softening the SID's deportation policy.

I'm always amused that Chu Shuzhi produces (randomly, from his coat pocket?) two cans of beer and offers one to Ji Xiaobai, completely unapologetically leaving Guo Changcheng out. He still thinks of Changcheng as someone he's babysitting, not a partner.

Do you have a stand-out favourite scene or quote from the first half of episode 6? What do you think of Guo Changcheng's technique for handling Ji Xiaobai? How about Chu Shuzhi's? How happy are you to see Ying Chun in bush and half-transformed states? Best thing about Zhao Yunlan consulting Shen Wei in his office at night? (Hint: all of it!) Hi, welcome to this week's instalment of the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is last week's half-episode. On to the second half!

Episode 5, from 23:04

Summary: By the lakeside, Wu Xiaojun appears in front of his father, accuses him of wanting him dead, and reveals the truth of what happened to him. Wu Tian'en is shocked, but begs him to let the kidnapping victims go, and eventually convinces him he's sincere. They reconcile - only for Wu Tian'en to take an arrow for his son. Wu Xiaojun goes after Papa Huang, but Zhao Yunlan catches up with him and tells him to worry about his father. Guo Changcheng wants to use the Sundial to save Wu Tian'en; Zhao Yunlan takes it instead - but once the Sundial activates, the Envoy appears. Everyone begs the Envoy to save Wu Tian'en - Shen Wei notes the SID has changed.

The Envoy takes Wu father and son to Dixing, has to immediately protect them from an attack by palace guards, and questions Wu Tian'en about what happened with the Dixing team he used to be a part of. Wu Tian'en knows nothing, but when the Envoy mentions the captain wasn't dead as he thought, he tells the Envoy the captain's wife was pregnant.

In Haixing, in the SID lab, the Sundial projects an image of the Mountain-River Awl, Shen Wei has moved into Zhao Yunlan's building, and Guo Changcheng tries to learn how to tail someone from Chu Shuzhi. And we head into the next case - where there is another bathroom disappearance, and Guo Changcheng very reasonably wonders if Wu Xiaojun has returned. *g* Zhou Weiwei's fiancé remembers her fighting with a woman in their bathroom, except then the woman disappeared. And now she has disappeared too.

Chu Shuzhi: "Since time began, no matter the country, or whether human or not, wherever creatures live in groups there will always be a hierarchy. And that is why there will always be killing and oppression."

Detail:

Wu Xiaojun's ring (this case's significant jewellery representing his connection with his father) gets thrown away twice.

The first time, he himself throws it into the lake as "proof" that he doesn't care about his father - but in the scene following their reconciliation, he promptly has it back.

The second time, in that very scene where see he has it back, Huang Chaoyang takes it away again, mocks its worthlessness and throws it into the pool. But again, in the following scenes - at the SID (though it's hard to see there), and in Dixing - Wu Xiaojun promptly has it back. :D

Questions:

What's your favourite moment in this part of the episode? What happened to little Wu Xiaojun after he was abandoned? How does Zhu Jiu find all these people? Do you think the Huang and Li fathers suffered any consequences for what they did? Do you think it's meaningful which of the SID members beg the Envoy to save Wu Xiaojun (Guo Changcheng, Lin Jing, Zhao Yunlan), and which don't speak up (Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing)? Is there anything in the Wu Xiaojun case that comes from the novel? Why is Zhao Yunlan suddenly insisting on jogging? Is Guo Changcheng uniquely bad at tailing people, or are Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan bad at teaching him? How many different kinds of bathroom disappearances can there be?

We're looking forward to some more fun discussions as we revisit Haixing, Dixing, and the SID – and of course you can always drop in on any of the previous discussions at any time.

Summary
The Chancellor, worried about the university's reputation, tells Shen Wei to move out of the teachers' dorm. The SID team eat popcorn!! Zhao Yunlan and co. investigate a rich bratty young man's mysterious disappearance from his bath. The family butler, Wu Tian'en, arouses suspicions. Shen Wei chooses an apartment over the estate agent's objection that he could do better. (The only flat Shen Wei would consider better is the one across the hall.) The bratty young man's fiancée disappears from her bath, too. Zhao Yunlan interviews Wu Tian'en, who claims to be just a loyal butler. Shen Wei dramatically confronts Wu Tian'en in the street, recognising him from 20+ years ago, and warns him not to touch Zhao Yunlan. The SID needs evidence, but Zhao Yunlan refuses to turn to the Envoy for help; instead, he calls Shen Wei. Wu Tian'en leaves the Huang house because he believe his missing son is back. Cue flashbacks to him searching the city for his son 20 years ago.

When Shen Wei warns Wu Tian'en not to touch Zhao Yunlan, he uses the plural "you": "Zhao Yunlan is someone you are not allowed to touch." (赵云澜这个人你们不许动) So Shen Wei sees Wu Tian'en as part of a group who are a potential threat (presumably the missing team he sent after the Hallows).
