Once again, it’s been a long time since I posted anything new on the Splott blog. You might think that I am not interested in the layout, which is far from the truth.
As you will see from the list of exhibitions we have attended over the past couple of years, we have been busy transporting baseboards and similar items in and out of vans, sports halls, and racecourse grandstands at regular intervals.
These exciting weekends have been interspersed with the creation of additional items of rolling stock for the layout to help fill out our train consists.
This includes the addition of the epic CAVALEX class 56 and two Sentinel Works shunters, which are used as part of an operating sequence designed to maintain the sanity of the operators during an exhibition weekend.

In addition to attending the shows, we have been fortunate enough to have articles published about Splott in both British Railway Modelling Magazine and, more recently, in Railway Modeller (May 2025).

Our most recent change to the layout has been to update the couplings on all of our stock. Originally, the plan was to utilise an electromagnetic coupling system, which would allow the layout to be operated from the front without placing the operator in the path of the public. Having settled on the Dingham coupling as the most suitable system to use, we have since discovered that although the idea was sound, the installation, operation, and reliability were somewhat lacking. I do like the idea of the Dingham, but have unfortunately found that it isn’t really compatible with modern, long wheel-based or bogied stock running over reverse curves and doesn’t provide the confidence and certainty that is required when operating a layout at a show!
The alternative has been to revert back to the tried and tested ‘Smiths – Instanter coupling’. Yes, this does require manual coupling and results in the operator needing to venture up and down the layout on occasion, but this is a small price to pay for the reliability that these couplings offer.
Our first trial of the stock following the retrofitting of these Instanter couplings took place on the weekend of 10th and 11th May 2025 at the EXPO EM Spring show in Bracknell. The couplings worked a treat, and Splott was lucky enough to be awarded the Peter Denny Trophy for ‘Most Authentically Operated Layout’ – so I guess that this ratifies the decision to change the couplings! – Phew!

Our next show with Splott isn’t until March 2026, so there is now plenty of time to do some housekeeping on the layout.
The layout also received several enquiries about attending future shows across the country and hopefully we will be able to present it at some of these in the near future.
