Catch Up

Ok, so it's already almost halfway through July and I haven't done a single post on anything we've done this summer. I am really bad! We have been traveling to see family and friends so much this summer (we have been gone 3 out of the past 4 wekends)and we are having a blast doing it. But at the same time...we are exhausted and sooooo ready to stay home!! And finally this weekend we will get to, so I hope to finally catch up on our blog and share some photos of the fun we've been having. Hope everyone has had a great summer so far!! Let us know what you've been up to!

Nebraska and the Black Hills

I took a three day weekend from work early in May to go back home to Nebraska and take Sam and Aubrey into the Black Hills of South Dakota. While I was growing up, my family almost took every family vacation in the Black Hills and I have many found memories from the area. We started off the day at the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs. It was some place we went not only as a family but also for school trips. Sam and Aubrey really enjoyed the tour and Aubrey even voluntarily asked the tour guide a question..."When did the mastodons die?". The tour guide explained to her they were not around at the same time period as the mammoth skeletons we were viewing. She cracks us up!!

We also took the time to go for a swing at Evan Plunge in Hot Springs. Of course that is how the town got its name due to the warms spring water used by the center for the indoor swim park. I can tell you for sure that it has not change one bit from when I was a kid and went there for many birthday parties. Not even a paint job! But Aubrey love it and we all have fun going on the slide!

We drove up though Wind Cave and Custer State Parks and were able to see lots of wildlife and Custer National monument. I don't think it will ever be done in my lifetime. We ate dinner in Hill City and started the drive back home through Keystone so we could catch a look at Mount Rushmore. It ended up being a pretty long day, but we all enjoyed it. Sam even asked me why I had never taken him up to see some of those places before!

We also hiked to the "hole in the wall" at Chadron State Park just south of Chadron in the Pine Ridge. We managed to wake up a heard of big horn sheep who were basking in the sun just at the base of the butte we were hiking too. Another place Sam says I should have taken him to sooner!

Easter Morning

Easter morning we managed one more Easter egg hunt, from the real Easter bunny this time, and Aubrey loved the basket of goodies too. We went to church and had a nice relaxing afternoon with a big Easter meal just for us. Even though we would have loved to be with family it was still a wonderful Easter holiday for us! Image

Easter Eggs

Easter time! I'm moving from one holiday to the next pretty fast, but oh well. We decided to dye eggs the weekend before Easter, then we could enjoy eating them through the week. My Dad happened to be visiting that weekend, so he helped Aubrey learn how to place the eggs into the dye without breaking them or spilling the dye. She had so much fun and loved all the different colors. Oh by the way...since when does a simple egg dyeing kit come with 12 colors!? I was totally surprised and didn't even have enough cups for all of them so I ended up throwing two of the tablets away (Shhhh don't tell Aubrey ;) ). Growing up I remember six colors and having to wait my turn with my sisters for the particular color you wanted to uses. Aubrey's egg dying only lasted about 15 minutes between 10 colors, 14 eggs and one kid. I guess we will have to work on increasing the kid number to make the fun last a little longer! :)

I also wanted Aubrey to get to participate in the fun of Easter egg hunting! She has done it once or twice when she was younger, but last year while Sam and Aubrey were in Connecticut for Easter, I was in Minnesota by myself. And and I don't really remember them talking about doing any egg hunting. This year I think between the city egg hunt, the Windsor Rec Center and friends houses, Aubrey hunted for eggs around 5 different times! We had an over abundance of candy even before the Easter bunny visited our house!! She loved it and I'm glad the city had a bucket to recycle eggs at the park so we didn't take them all home.
Image I think I forgot to mention it snowed the morning of the city egg hunt. Nothing stuck to the ground but it was chilly!

I had to show this series of pics. I'm sure most kids are like this when it comes to candy - totally focused, unwrapping, shoving it in their mouth, then they will listen when asked to smile for a picture with chocolate in their teeth! Oh yes and the scowl!

Catch up

I'm going to try and play catch up since I've been a a slacker with blogging the past couple of months. Plus with the busy summer quickly approaching, who knows when I get to share our spring with you. :)

In March we went to St. Patrick's Day parade in Fort Collins. My sister, Jessica and her boyfriend Chip were also in town visiting and having fun in Colorado for both of there March birthdays! We were all scrambling at the last minute to find something green to wear so we would be festive. Aubrey ended up wearing a summer jumper with green polka-dots and a watermelon sew on the front, but it didn't matter because we all had fun! We ended up getting there a little late, so we had to squeeze Aubrey to the front for her to see and reach the candy and beads there were passing out. She made out pretty good filling both of her coat pockets and eating probably just as much!

Aubry loved the green nail polish on the horses! Or is it hoof polish? :)

Someone had to get a kiss while wearing the headband!
Plus with the red hair she looks the most Irish anyway...huh Jess!

We finished off the day by Sam and I having a double birthday date (or triple since Sam birthday was a week later) to the Melting Pot! Jess and Chip were introduced to fondue cooking and we all ate too much, but had an absolute blast together!
