Explore the universe

Stellarium is a free educational software that serves as a planetarium, allowing users to observe and explore the night sky from their own homes. With its realistic 3D graphics, it provides a detailed view of celestial objects such as stars, planets, and constellations. Customize the viewing experience to see how the world reacts to phenomena.

Stellarium is equipped with a wealth of information about various astronomical phenomena. It includes features such as a search function for specific celestial bodies, educational tools for learning about astronomy, and the ability to simulate the night sky in different locations around the globe.

Mapping the cosmos in your hands

Stellarium revolves around exploration and observation. Users can pan across the sky, zoom into planets and stars, jump forward or backward in time, and simulate events like eclipses and meteor showers to see how the heavens evolve. The software includes powerful zooming and search functions, accurate positions for celestial bodies, and support for telescope control. Through plugins and scripting, users can enhance functionality further, adding satellites, or custom nebula textures.

This app is highly customizable and supports a broad range of tools that appeal to beginners and advanced users alike. With support for vast star catalogs, telescope integration, and multiple language interfaces, the software is usable as a teaching aid, planning tool for amateur astronomy, or simply as a spectacular stargazing simulator. However, the wealth of features and options can present a steeper learning curve, and first-time users might need to explore menus and settings.

Learning through observation

Visually, Stellarium excels at rendering a realistic night sky, with accurate atmospheric effects, Milky Way bands, star colors, and celestial motion that mimic what you’d see with the naked eye or through binoculars. The planets, satellites, and deep-sky objects are plotted with data from extensive astronomical catalogs, making them appear true to life as they rise and set relative to your chosen location and time.

This science-based app received a series of substantial updates that expanded star catalogs using the Gaia DR3 database, enhanced astrometry computations, and added improved texture and modeling for the Sun and more precise astronomical tools in the AstroCalc/Almanac suite. Developers also boosted support for diverse sky cultures and constellation representations, added plugin tools like Sky Culture Maker, and refined core features and interface elements to make the sky simulation even more accurate and culturally inclusive.

A window to the night sky for everyone

Stellarium stands as a powerful and visually impressive planetarium tool that makes astronomy accessible for learners, hobbyists, and sky-watchers at all levels. Its realistic star rendering, event simulations, and deep educational features turn exploration into an engaging experience, whether you’re planning telescope sessions or simply observing constellations from home. While its feature depth may feel overwhelming initially, Stellarium rewards patience with an incredibly rich and accurate cosmic journey.

Decent, but needs to be more user friendly. Decent , but the included animations are confusing and very un user friendly. The app however is good if you want to use it as a guide to finding a certain star or planet before some night sky viewing. Pros: accuaracy Cons: user friendly

A skywatcher's dream.. I love Stellarium. I use it on the patio at night. I've been using it for years and have it pretty down pat these days. Pros: I was impressed when the recent lunar eclipse (blood moon) showed up exactly the correct color in Stellarium. Cons: I think a scale moon should be the default. No big deal, though.
