Crafty Mandy

Lately I've decided to start doing crafts again. I used to do them all of the time when I was younger and I really enjoyed it. I work nights and It's nice to have something to do to pass the downtime. I do homework but can't stand that all night, plus it puts me to sleep. Reading a book is the same story. So I finally finished my first "WorkWork" project (derived from HOMEwork). Here it is :)

Meet The Turkey. It was a felt applique packet I got from JoAnn's. It's the first one I have ever done and I felt like I was successful. Now Thanksgiving just needs to come so I can put it on display!

The Unsung Heros

I've been meaning to write about this for a while and i'm finally getting around to it. Travis recently had a paper route and let me just tell you that paper routes are NOT how they are depicted in movies. They basically must be done by adults. Who have a fuel efficient vehicle. And don't mind waking up at 2 am every morning. And the pay really isn't that good. Not after the time it takes and after the price of gasoline.

So anyway... I would help Travis when I didn't have work or whatever else. I was amazed at how picky people are about their newspapers.

"On the porch." ok... so this will require the delivery person to park their car, walk half way up and throw it the rest of the way, depending on how your house is laid out. You would be amazed how many people demand this and if you don't do it just right, they will call and complain.

"On the porch, in a box." So they've taken it to the next level and not only need it on the porch but also need it in a box. Forget walking halfway, you'll be walking clear to the porch for this one.

The best part was, the route he had was in Orem. And we knew people who lived in the houses. And they weren't old! They apparently just thought their house was the equivalence of Buckingham Palace when it comes to getting the morning newspaper. I used to joke with Travis on one particular house that I was going to make them breakfast while I was there.... may as well with everything else they demanded!

So the requests were one thing... we dealt with them. But like I said, if they weren't done JUST SO... people would call and complain. This gets relayed back to the delivery person, in not the nicest way all of the time. If you get ONE complaint, your pay is lowered. You get too many and you're fired.

Also people would call if their paper was late. The rule is "delivered by 6" on weekdays and "delivered by 7" on weekends. I'm willing to bet my life that there is no one who HAS to have their paper right at that time but you'd think it was a life or death situation by the complaints we got.

I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER complain about a paper delivery person after having done it. It straight up sucks.

I thought about this a lot when Travis had the paper route and I reflected back on the time when I was a bagger/cart retriever at Albertsons while I was in highschool. Same story pretty much, especially with the carts. What is with people not taking their carts to the little bins? Are you really THAT busy? So the poor teenager gets to play Frogger with the cars in the parking lot while cleaning up your laziness. I didn't see you pay for that anywhere during your transaction.

Same with servers/waitresses/however you want to put it. I've never formally worked as one but it doesn't take a detective to see how poorly they can be treated. I've had a lot of good ones and I've had a lot of bad ones... I'm not saying they all deserve $20 tips. However... that's a tough job under the best of circumstances and I've been at restaurants where I'm just waiting to hear some ***** request that the waitress feed it to him while she's at it.

This is the end of my rant haha I just really want the "little" people to know that they are appreciated. At least by me, if no one else. I know your job is hard work and you really have to deal with people a lot. And you don't get paid jack to do it... so thank you. I hope that you have good days that outweigh the bad and I hope you go to school so you don't have to do that kind of work ever again ;)
