(I apologize for the first journal in what's probably months being a repost from my Tumblr, but I find the topic of it fascinating as while it's not the only issue with Evolution Worlds (i.e Evolutia, in Japan), it represents a pretty significant part of the game being axed from it.)

In a 1999 interview alongside Toshihiro Nagoshi, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about Dragon Quest. Being the Gameplay-Forward thinker he is, Miyamoto had this interesting bit to say:

Another example would be Dragon Quest… the media talked a lot about how good the story and scenario were in Dragon Quest, and ever since then, I think there’s been a tendency to equate “good story” with “good game.” It’s not really Yuji Horii’s fault. Dragon Quest took all these numbers and expressed them via language. What I really like about it is the rhythm and how the story is paced. It’s extremely well-done. No matter how good your story is, if the rhythm of the game feels bad, no one will play it. But this is an aspect that the media never writes about.


One could argue about that quote, but it allows me to make my point about Evolutia.

The original Evolution games have a clear Ebb and Flow to their gameplay structure and overall gameplay loop. In regards to the structure, the game interchanges story and gameplay, with story segments preceding gameplay which, until the endgame of each, is usually uninterrupted by plot. Then, after completing the dungeon, you get more story scenes. It’s a simple back and forth, but Evolutia breaks it in the first half.

Evolutia’s first half only has three dungeons (and that’s being generous and calling the cut-down Kronprinz a “dungeon”). However, the game retains most of the cutscenes from the Dreamcast original. So four dungeons’ worth of storyline needs to be given to the player by the time they finish the second dungeon (thus triggering the finale of the first part), in-turn meaning that the player gets hit with quite a few cutscenes at once.

For example: In the original game, the player could go to the Society and get an assignment after Gre finished his initial lecture to Mag. In Evolutia, this scene immediately goes to Pepper Box’s intro, despite Pepper being introduced in Chapter 2 of the original game. While Pepper is available “earlier”, the player still needs to sit through more cutscenes before they can get to gameplay.

This already wrecks havoc on the game’s rhythm and pacing, but it goes even further when you factor in the gameplay loop.

Evolution is a dungeon crawler with roguelike elements. If I were to summarize the gameplay loop, I’d say that each floor in World of Sacred Device and the bonus dungeon of Far Off Promise has two-three considerations to take into account:

  1. Where is the Exit?
  2. Where is the Treasure?
  3. Am I strong enough to beat the boss at the end?

The first question is self-evident: You need to find the exit to go to the next floor. This is actually something that the first game does better than the second, as the exit is denoted on the map (I suppose this is because the exits in the first game could only spawn in certain room types whereas the second game could, theoretically, put them in any room). You can just memorize whichever room the exit is in, but when you start getting into the more sprawling dungeon floors (especially in 2’s new game plus mode)…)

The second question is the more pressing matter. In Evolution, you have various different money sinks to keep in mind throughout the game: The Cyframe users can have their parts powered up, can have slots added to their cyframes, Mag’s debt (which, in total, I believe comes out to 300,000 dinale in both games) looms over the player and if a player chooses to bring Chain or Pepper (or Carcano, in the case of the Tower of Despair/bonus dungeon) to a boss fight, they lose a chunk of their reward (in the case of the aforementioned tower, you can lose even more if one of those characters isn’t Gre).

The main treasure that players want to find are Appraisal Items. Mag can take these to the Society where he can exchange them for cash or potential items. Some Appraisal Items even need to be combined with 2-3 other components to create another item worth much more money. Removing Appraisal from the game weakens the gameplay because the only real reason to bother with treasure is on the off-chance that you can stumble upon new Cyframe parts (which is relatively rare).

Guess what Worlds/Evolutia does!

You can’t trade in Appraisal Items in the first half of the game. I don’t think Appraisal items even spawn in the early dungeons and even if they could, there’s nothing to do with them until you get to Museville. So unless you want to gamble on the Cyframe parts mentioned earlier, the gameplay loop becomes “find exit” and “make sure you’re strong enough to beat the boss”. And then two dungeons later, it’s off the Kronprinz.

Evolution isn’t exactly a perfect game series, but I feel like the Gamecube port hurts it in various ways. The changes made to the first half do not result in a good first impression and that negative impression can easily spill over into the second half. It’d be like playing the GBA port of Sonic The Hedgehog without having played a Sonic game before, then going into Sonic 2.

So yeah, I can see what Miyamoto meant by a game’s “rhythm” needing to be good.

(Again, my apologizes for what is basically a repost, but I've been in an Evolution mood lately, so expect more of that. Or more of whatever I end up doing).

So, Dark Knight Ingus.

While any of the four Warriors of Light in Final Fantasy III can become Dark Knights, Ingus stands out for a few reasons. The two in particular:
  • His background
In the unused text for Final Fantasy III, almost every area has a some form of unused text. A lot of them are interesting, showcasing party dynamics that are underutilized or just plain non-existent in the final game and scenarios that would have diverged from the original. Falgabard's unused text is interesting for a different reason though: the main focus of the skit is that Ingus experiences deja vu upon arriving in the covert village, leading the party to speculate that he was born there. While Ingus is initially hesitant, he eventually reveals that he wants to return to the village once more and learn to master the Dark Blade (without relying on the crystal's boons).
So yeah, it is very likely that at least one of Ingus' parents was a Dark Knight
  • His role
Final Fantasy games tend to have parties of four prominent characters. The four tend to have vaguely similar temperaments: The hero is heroic (shock), one of the party members is significantly empathic and a third is either gruff, serious or both to some extent (the fourth is a bit of a wild card. Closest is an association with animals/summons, but that's arguable to an extent).
This is especially pronounced in the Memory of Heroes novelization. Memory of Heroes is not a 10/10 novel, but it has some fun and interesting ideas. One of those is the implication that the Warriors of Light reincarnate or inherit the wills of their predecessors. In Ingus' case, he's clearly a successor for Zauver, given how he's more sarcastic here. However, under this setup, he's also a successor to Ricard... Or perhaps Leon, who Ricard gives his light to.
While this idea is strictly in the Memory of Heroes continuity, similar ideas or just acknowledgement of these roles is not impossible.

I have ideas. Here they are.

I have yet to actually explain what Koryu/Super Koryu/Chaos Theory is at this time, so I'll try to be a whee bit general about this.

First: Series Represented in this talk:
  • Evolution/Evolutia
  • Mega Man Legends/Rockman Dash
  • Skies of Arcadia*
  • Power Stone**
  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • The Legend of Zelda (in a minor sense)
* I still have not played Skies of Arcadia. I shall correct that at some point, though for now, physically is a challenge (with these prices)
** Power wasn't originally part of this AU, but I made the mistake of binging Power Stone 2 and am now heavily considering it (even though, if I do, I can kiss any chance of this project not being a oneshot/vignette collection goodbye with the amount of series I have or am considering).

So, the world of Chaos Theory is held up with ducktape, superglue and dreams. Here's the cliffhanger notes about it:
  • The world tends to have "Cycles", according to the legends of Dark Gaia and Light Gaia: Inevitably, the world will be destroyed and inevitably it (and, seemingly, those on it) shall be reborn.
  • The world in the earlier cycles was far less stable, so it was a crapshoot how long it would survive, this lasted until the Flood of Darkness happened, which ended in the Dark Clan being sealed away in the "Reverse Side" of the world (which is now known as the Dark Realm). This, in-turn, led to the longest longevity of the cycles until relatively recently when the cycles started getting cut short.
  • The Chaos Emeralds also exist and have been used and abused plenty of times by people seeking their power. Entire civilizations have made their fortunes overnight and promptly collapsed in a similar time frame. One particular "Oopsy-Whoopsy" seems to have split the Light Realm even further, into a Land of the Earth and a Land of the Sky. Over time, knowledge of this faded and only the Adventuring community seems to have knowledge of both realms: To the people of the Earth, the Sky Lands are merely the occasional floating continent while the People of the Sky treat the surface as a Land of Darkness.
  • Chaos Theory itself primarily takes place in the "Fantasy World" inspired by Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels' World 9. It's a weird place and one of few places to exist both in the Land of the Sky and the Land of the Earth.
Ok, now that we've got the wacky AU worldbuilding out of the way, let's talk about the elements and ideas of the series in question:
  • One of the big ones, due to the Sonic series' presence in the crossover, is the question: Are the Power Stones related to the Chaos Emeralds? Both are magic jewels with sets of seven, as well as a bigger stronger stone, that have the power to grant anyone's wish. The easiest explanation would be that the people of the Earth Lands call them Power Stones while the people of the Sky Lands call them Chaos Emeralds... Though the usual method of how I'm going about the Sonic canon (more on that later) makes that complicated. There's also the possibility that one is a man-made creation based on the other (just murder the mysticism why don't cha) or that they are purely coincidentally similar but overall unrelated objects...
  • Moon. The Moon has some degree of significance in both Skies of Arcadia (Moonstones, maybe more stuff) and Mega Man Legends (Elysium). The latter is particularly tricky because I'm debating whether to have some connection between the Master and FF3's Noah (not the same guy, but they jointly ended up beyond humanity or whatever? I'm just spitballin')
  • I do want Yurka and Sera to be major antagonists. The general antagonists would be a mix of the Eighth, Valuan and Eggman Empires. The Bonne Family and the Red Wolves would be the Rival/Frenemy groups. Valgus should probably be in there, probably as a follower of either Ganondorf (who is otherwise involved in a different plotline) or Galcian.
  • I have two starts in mind: The general start where Mag, Linear and Chain are investigating a ruin that Megaman Volnutt is somehow also investigating and they all end up falling into the Minus World. A prologue that I decided on for Power Stone involves Falcon stopping in Pannam Town and exchanging stories with Mag and Linear, telling them of the Power Stones.
  • Dare I include a plotline where Eugene tries to sow paranoia into Mag regarding his fellow adventurers' possible reactions to Linear's true nature?
  • Sonic Chronicles is "loose canon" in this AU: Some variation of the events of the game happened in that the Nocturnus Clan were exiled via freak distortion rift, and they sought to return to the world. However, Ix and a portion of the clan wanted to conquer the world rather than just reintegrate into it. Cue a civil war between Shade and Ix's chapters that Knuckles, Sonic, Tails and Amy get involved with. In the end, Ix's chapter has been banished and Shade and Knuckles decide to jointly lead the rest of the echidnas: Shade being the leader of the clan while Knuckles, as Angel Island's guardian and having lived in the world, is their guide and overall overseer. Even with this, Knuckles has feelings he can't understand about no longer being the last of his kind for so long while Shade is left to wonder how and why her clan was exiled. When a dimensional rift opens near the two, Shade and Knuckles decide that a good ol' fashioned treasure hunt is in order (Shade is a Procurator, after all).
  • Even if the audience knows that they aren't bad guys, initially playing the Blue Rogues as ambiguous from Rock, Mag & Linear's perspectives is an idea that amuses me. After all, they're already rivals with two gangs of pirates (friendly rivals, and ex-pirates in at least one case, but still)
  • Power Stone would probably be the hardest to integrate, if only for who to add to Falcon's party. Skies of Arcadia has the main three (Vyse, Aika and Fina) and Evolution I could get away with Mag + Linear + Whoever. Guess I should hit up the Power Stone anime and see if that gives me any ideas.

Merry 2024. I have a lot of plans for this year. We'll see how they shake out.

As for the plans themselves:
  • Work on my main crossover trifecta (The MoH AU, Koryu and Chaos Theory). More on each of those in the future.
  • Utilize solo TTRPG for my stories (we'll see how that works out).
  • Work more with Evolution (both the cut content from Worlds and in fanfics in general).
  • Make a prototype/demo for a Godot-based game staring Onion Knight and Ingus
  • And more stuff that isn't coming to mind.

So, it's been a while. Year's almost over. So, what to do with this blog?

Well, the primary thing I need to learn is to use this place as a space for my fanfic ideas. Aside from that, I'll probably make the occasional analysis or whatever.

Just a brief update, for now. Expect something else soon.

 I guess this is as good a first post as any.

I notice that there's a sort of game aesthetic that I like to call "Adventurer-Core" or something else. The two primary games that I'm most familiar with that fulfill this sort of itch are Evolution: The World of Sacred Device, and Mega Man Legends. Both have very different gameplay styles, yet have a somewhat similar tone to them.

Evolution is a Roguelite of sorts, split into two elements: The hub town where Mag can talk to people and prepare, and the dungeons, filled with monsters, traps and potential treasure. The game is nowhere near as punishing as traditional roguelites and the item economy is kinda borked (Status items are only occasionally useful due to how the statuses in Evolution work, and Appraisal Items don't require any bag space by the second game (thankfully)). Once can even argue that part of what carried Evolution was it being one of the earliest Dreamcast games that was an RPG (along with the novelty of being full 3D).

But Evolution has a comfortable atmosphere. The story is pretty low stakes for the most part; While the threat of the 8th Empire builds in the background, Mag is mostly concerned with making money and rebuilding his family name. Pannam Town is a charming little town, with the various NPCs that Mag and Linear know personally. Linear has little animations for when Mag is shopping at the item store or doing business at the Cyframe Upgrade shop. And the flavor text. The different NPC dialogue for each chapter. The Dungeon music, the changing aesthetics of the dungeons, the character expressions-

I can go on.

Though playing the original does make me question why Sting removed the stair paths/indicators on the map in later games.

On the other end, Mega Man Legends. Mega Man Legends is an action dungeon-crawler. Jump n Shoot Man jumps and shoots his way throughout an island known as Kattelox Island, exploring ruins, finding refractors (crystals that act as power sources) to exchange for money and battling both ancient robots and a gang of pirates known as the Bonne Family.

Mega Man Legends has a lot more to it. Kattelox's town areas are usually big and full of places to go or things to do. It could be minor stuff like using vending machines or listening to CDs at a store, and it be more significant stuff, like rebuilding parts of the town that get destroyed due to the shenanigans of the Bonnes.

The Dungeon-crawling also takes on a different flavor: While Evolution was a Mystery Dungeon-style take, Mega Man Legends takes a more Legend of Zelda/Tomb Raider style approach in the form of dungeons that Rock will have puzzle his way through while fighting off Reaverbots. Even getting to the dungeons in and of themselves can be an adventure... which is probably why there aren't two many of them: There's the sub-city, which runs under Kattelox and connects to numerous other places, including other dungeons, the sub-gates (of which, I believe there are 3) and the main gate as the final dungeon.

Of course, Evolution only had 5 dungeons (not counting the final dungeon). I guess the exploration between them and just how long it can take to get to the sub-gates trips me up.

And need I say anything about Meg Leg/Rock Dash's artstyle? If Low-Poly graphics didn't peak there, then they came pretty close.

Anyway, those two are, in my eyes, Adventurer-Core: RPGs (usually JRPGs for me, but certainly not limited to those) where the main threat of the game isn't immediate and the main characters are adventurers in some sort of way. A game that would probably fit this dynamic as well that I should probably play soon would be Skies of Arcadia, and that has the reputation of being one of the greatest Dreamcast games

 Let's start this off on the right foot, shall we?

Final Fantasy III has a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of unused text! I made a Pastebin of all of it here, but I will can talk about it here too, if there's interest.

Evolution is a pair of Dreamcast RPGs! Play em! Or don't! I might talk abut them every once in a while (especially Worlds, I have such things to say...)

Er..., have some Tetris CDi music?! I love the sort of sound that the early CD consoles (Saturn, Sega CD and whatnot) had, and so I'll post some of those from time to time!
