REAL Adventures!

We have been up to some serious adventures over the past few months and life has been full of surprises!  Owen has turned into a toddler overnight and the we are already well into August, where did the summer go?  Here are the brief highlights of the excitement we've experienced as well as some pictures from the past few months.

  • Two pink lines were quite a shock on an early Monday morning in May!  While my first thought was shock and I barely functioned for a day or two, it quickly turned to excitement at the thought of Baby Avey #2.  The timing is not at all what I would have planned, a Christmas baby and maternity leave during my busiest time at work, but I know everything happens for a reason and it's amazing how things work out.  I was lucky to have another pretty easy 1st trimester and am still feeling great at 19 weeks.  We found out this week we are having a GIRL!  And we couldn't be more excited.
  • We vacationed in North Carolina in June and Owen experienced his first: airplane ride, real vacation, ocean views, seashells, sand castles, full-length movies, girly toys, etc.  It was an amazing trip and he loved hanging out with the Miller girls, Piper and "Packenzie", Mr. Nathan and Kelly.  Emerald Isle, NC is a great place to vacation, I would highly recommend it.
  • Owen started summer camp the 2nd week of June and we decided to just go for it with the potty training this summer.  His teachers were very encouraging and the setup at camp makes it an easy transition.  So the 2nd weekend of June we put on some Thomas underwear (obviously) and never looked back!  The first weekend was a nightmare, changing clothes every 5 minutes.  "Ooops I peed!" "Uh oh" "Look Mommy!" was pretty much all we heard.  But after that first week he was nearly "potty" trained and less than 8 weeks later I consider him fully trained.  We have accidents here and there and will be in diapers at night for a while since he's still so young, but it's been amazing and I'm so glad we did it this early.
  • Since we just love change lately, we also decided to make the jump to the Big Boy Bed, which was talked about constantly for weeks.  I was going to wait until he jumped out of that crib by himself, but our doctor suggested doing it much sooner so we could all prepare and it would be less of a shock.  And less chance of him breaking a limb.  So we bought a full mattress with the thought that we could keep it around longer and potentially use it as an emergency guest bed since we'll be losing our guest room in the spring.  We pimped it out with Thomas gear from top to bottom and you would not believe the excitement!  "Thomas! Percy! Edward! James! Look at all my trains Mommy!  My pillows! Thomas!" He couldn't come up for air describing everything he saw.  We've had pretty good success, although he loves to come sleep at the gate to his room for some reason, maybe to be closer to us?  Or so that we'll come and get him and tuck him back in?  Either way, bed time has slipped from 7:30 to 8:30 pretty quickly and sometimes the last round of stern good nights takes place around 9.  But, we can't complain because he sleeps great through the night and doesn't get up again until the morning.
  • Smaller excitement has been learning how to ride his tricycle, riding the El downtown, watching the 4th of July parade, swimming at the pool, getting a haircut with Franco, reading books to us, and going to the zoo.  We have a great book called "Zooborns" that has pictures of dozens of baby animals and he has nearly all of them memorized, including mongooses, pottos, aardvarks, echidnas, otters and flamingos.  He also has moved on from playing just the air guitar to now the air trumpet.  We need to get him in a music class this winter.
  • He is speaking in full sentences most of the time and the stuff that he says is hilarious!  I'll have to start keeping notes on my phone so I can share the highlights in my next post.

Image
Playing baseball, he definitely swings the bat left-handed.
I struggle to help him do it because it feels so backwards!

Image
The Deerfield 4th of July parade was a big hit, full of fire trucks, ambulances and old cars.

Happy as a clam in his big boy bed, Thomas overload.

15 weeks

Image
Petting the goats at the zoo, sooooo dirty.

Image
His favorite hairstyle.

Image
Hanging out at the train station after school.  His favorite activity is eating snacks on the
bench and watching the trains go by.  We sat here for over an hour.

Image
He loves his monkeys and lately loves laying in our bed with us in the morning.
No complaints here!

Image
This is hard to see because I took it in the dark, but here he is sleeping at the gate
to his room.  He carries all of his blankets, pillows and "friends" over with him.  We can hear
him making multiple trips across his room to get the setup just right.

Image
Here are a few pictures from his recent haircut with Franco, I think this is haircut #3.
Which is crazy since he's nearly 2 1/2 years old!  This is the first time he sat in the chair
by himself and not in Teague's lap, which Teague was thrilled about.

Image
Waiting for the El.  He LOVED riding the train and threw a huge fit every
time we had to get off and switch lines or walk somewhere else.

Image
He loves his tricycle, we now have to ride it every day, rain or shine, and he's getting
really good at it.

Image
Lovely Sunday afternoon nap on the couch.

Image
Like I said, rain or shine.  It was pouring outside in this picture.

Image
Dinner time in NC.  What a life!

Image
1st experience with Pop-its in NC, they were a big hit and a big mess.

Image
Our amazing house in NC that was even better than the pictures and so affordable.
Have I mentioned how much I love Emerald Isle?

Image
Pretty content during our layover in Charlotte.  Yes that is Thomas on the iPad.
Image
Here is a picture of our video monitor, it's hard to see and hard to tell them apart,
but this is a shot of Teague and Owen fast asleep in Owen's bed.  Teague
went to check on him and never came back.  After 20 minutes of waiting to go to bed,
I finally checked the monitor and saw them both snoring away.

And finally, I saved the best for last.  Here is Baby GIRL Avey at 19 weeks.  Happy Shopping is right!

What Have We Been Up To?

That's a great question!  The past 3 months have flown by and I promised myself I would post before the official three month mark hits on May 1.  I was tempted to just stop blogging altogether, but for the few of you left out there that still stalk our blog I decided to keep it going.  Plus, I can now see statistics on our blog's activity and we have had over 10,000 site views to date!  That is pretty amazing and definitely motivation to keep on blogging.

Owen is officially a 2-year old and a "Toddler" as BabyCenter calls him, and boy is it entertaining.  I thought I would give you a list of highlights from the past few months, focusing on his birthday and other fun events.  He constantly keeps us entertained these days and talks like crazy, so we have some good stories if I can remember them all.

  • His Thomas & Friends obsession is in full gear and you would not believe how much he loves trains.  He can tell what kind of train is going by our house without even seeing it.  He excitedly screams out, "Metra! Daddy's train!", "Amtrak!", or "Freight train" all day long as the trains go by and he is never wrong.  An unforeseen benefit to living where we do (which is literally on the train tracks for those that have not been to our house).
  • He knows every sound an animal makes and has recently started asking about the more difficult animals. Last night I actually had to Google, "What does a penguin say?" - which is the wrong thing to Google, my search turned up all kinds of penguin jokes (Why don't penguins like rock music? Because they're full of "sole") none of which were funny.  After Googling "What sound does a penguin make?" we found out that there are a variety of sounds and the easiest one is "Huk, huk, huk".  And, in case you were curious, a turtle says, "Snap, snap, snap" and a fish says, "Glup, glup, glup".  I hope he doesn't ask about a giraffe or a snail.
  • He knows every kid and teacher at his school and on the way to school I ask him, "Who are you going to play with at school today Owen?" and he'll start listing out his friends and teachers and in between each name he says, "Who else Mommy?"
  • He loves to sing Happy Birthday, probably because we sang it constantly leading up to his birthday and then he had 5 different birthday celebrations.  Add Teague's birthday in the mix and we probably had 10 official celebrations.  On the actual day of his birthday, March 26th, his teacher said he would stop his friends in the hallway at school and say, "Sing Happy Birthday to me!"  I might have prepped him a little too much...
  • His mind is like a steel trap, he remembers things I don't even think he's paying attention to, which can be dangerous.  Luckily, he uses his memory for good things, like pointing out octagons (stop signs) thanks to Sesame Street and memorizing people's cars.  Every single time we're on the road he points out a Prius or two ("Ms. Sveta's car Mommy!"), minivans ("Ellie's car Mommy!"), SUV's (numerous friends at school) and silver sedans ("Papa George & Terry's car Mommy!").  Every time he is equally excited and every time the car is very close to reality.  We were recently out to dinner and we sat by the window and every time a car went by he screamed out whose car it was.  We were definitely the favorite table to sit by.
  • He is now forming basic sentences and I love seeing his mind work when he pauses to put the words together before saying them.  Recently, he'll bring up situations from a while back that he is now able to talk about, "I got an ouchie on my chin and Ms. Sveta gave me an orange popsicle." Or he'll relate something to what we're doing that is accurately hilarious, for example, we were recently driving on the highway and going under an overpass and he said, "We're going in the Misty Island Tunnel!" (Thomas reference).
  • He is obsessed with my iPhone and more importantly watching videos of himself and looking at photos of himself.  He now has them all memorized and sings along with them or quotes them.  I hope he doesn't become one of those annoying people that quote movies out loud as they're watching them...
  • He loves music, they listen to Raffi a lot at school and we do at home too.  Recently we were listening to music and dancing and he started playing his air guitar, left-handed I might add.  It was hilarious, we've never taught him that.  And tonight we were playing with trains quietly when he said, "I want my music, I want my tunes Mommy."
  • Recent words and phrases he has learned (i.e. can say them and understand them and use them in the right context):  Mohawk, airport, Misty Island tunnel (see prior bullet), octagon, spicy, ice cream sandwich (big mistake), puffin (a seabird), I like/don't like this/that, quesadilla, I do it myself.
  • Finally, we are officially starting "potty-training" or at least getting him acquainted with his new potty chair.  He's been great the past few weeks, using it every morning and every night.  Of course, we get excited every time he goes and give him positive reinforcement. Yesterday, as I was walking out of the bathroom he said, "Oooooh, good job Mommy!".  Hilarious.
Those are the highlights, I know there are so many more fun memories and "firsts" from the past few months but they are unfortunately all a blur now.  Here are some photos to further illustrate the above items and talk about other events that occurred over the past 3 months that I completely forgot about; I'll post videos in my next post.

Image
I have always loved things that are miniature or giant size (picture the tent and sleeping bag displays at Target!) - apparently Owen does too.  He was obsessed with this doll-size rocking chair at the Ash lake house.

Image
Vail you ask?  Breckenridge?  No, Lake Tippecanoe, IN.

Image
Street-sledding with Uncle Jeremy and Uncle Ben.

Image
Again, the miniature item obsession.

Image
Birthday friends - I love the pictures we have from this day.

Image
Patiently awaiting his Happy Birthday.

Image
He absolutely loved blowing out the candles, and eating the cake, obviously.

Image
Although expected, it was a sad day in our house when Peyton Manning signed with the Broncos.   What will we do with all of our #18 jerseys?

Image
We took a much needed vacation to Los Angeles to visit Katie and Adam while my parents watched Owen.  We all had a blast.

Image
"Just one more train Mommy?" We went to the train station every day after school for nearly two weeks in the peak of his train obsession, and our amazing summer-like weather.

Image
Being shy during his very first Happy Birthday celebration in Indiana.

Image
Sharing his candle with Henry at La Casa de Isaac, our family celebration on his actual birthday.  He LOVED the flan.  And the sombrero.  And all of the attention.

Image
Britney Spears anyone?

Image
Singing Happy Birthday to Teague on April 4th.

Image
Looking street-smart and tough with his mohawk and cuts.  No idea how he got that big gash on his nose.

Image
Enjoying a popsicle on the patio.

Image
Fresh bathtub mohawk

Image
My favorite picture of late and his favorite new hat.

Image
His 2nd favorite hat.  We were not going on a bike ride - FYI.

Image
A picture of his birthday gift from us; the table it goes on is on back-order and I was desperate during a recent sick day, so here it is!  This has already provided hours and hours of entertainment.

iPhone Happenings

As many of you know, I am now the proud owner of an iPhone thanks to Teague, er, Santa.  In my opinion, the best part about the iPhone is the camera.  It takes amazing pictures and the vintage camera app is also a lot of fun to use.  So, for a quick update on our life over the past month, I thought I would share some of my favorite iPhone shots (there are quite a few to share!):

Image
Trying on his sunglasses with Teague's hat.

Image
My favorite picture wearing Teague's boots -
he fell straight backwards after this picture and cracked up laughing.

Image
Telling Christmas stories at Grandma and Grandpa's.

Image
Running around excitedly with the tissue paper from his first gift -
did not even see the present inside the bag.

Image
Playing Santa perfectly and delivering gifts.

Image
Hanging out with Papa Mike.

Image
Having more fun with Papa Mike.

Image
Back home again enjoying the cold.

Image
In the elevator of the parking garage while downtown for his first haircut!

Image
No idea what he's about to get into - but that hair over his ear needs a trim!

Image
I think this picture proves that he needed a haircut... desperately!

Image
He was an angel the entire time.

Image
Looking a little worried here, but Franco was very reassuring.

Image
We done yet?

Image
Trim up those sideburns Franco.

Image
Looking sharp!

Image
1, 2, 3 - Make a face!
Image
He insisted on sweeping the floors while Teague got his haircut.

Image
Giving Franco a well-deserved hug afterwards.

Image
Love this picture.  Thank you Franco!

Image
New hat from Cousin Carter - adorable!

Image
Hanging out with his best friends at his new table.

Image
Did I mention this was his best friend?
This is the only way he'd get out of the car and go to school.

Image
The new hat completes his Elmer Fudd ensemble perfectly.

Image
He loves to swing, even when it's freezing outside.

Playing in his first real snow.  He loved it!
