Happy Birthday Papa!

We celebrated Lane's 31st birthday tonight, at Katie's wedding rehearsal dinner.  I didn't get a good picture of him so this one will have to do, the girls standing next to him while everyone was singing Happy Birthday.  I am so blessed to be married to such a wonderful man.  We love you Papa and hope you had a very special day!

Christmas, Christmas....

We celebrated Christmas in Iraan with my parents this year.  We arrived early to help Nana get things ready but I'm pretty sure we were in the way more than we were helpful!  We had a great time eating, playing games, opening presents, and visiting with one another.  Everything went fairly smooth until Emma Claire started puking Christmas eve.  She was up off and on most of the night so I didn't get much sleep. Thankfully, everyone decided to sleep in late Christmas morning and we didn't have to get up before the sun.  We planned to visit with friends but Zoey ended up puking Christmas night, so we stayed put at Nana's house so we didn't spread our wonderful germs.  Santa was very generous, as always, and the kiddos ended up with way too much stuff.

The girls were listening to The Night Before Christmas read by Nana and Dado.  I think they enjoyed hearing Nana and Dado's voice instead of mine.

Sawyer had lots of people to hold and love on him this weekend.  Coming home was a shock and quit an adjustment.

Sawyer - 3 months

My sweet boy is 3 months-old today! Here are a few milestones for my memory:
 - wakes up every morning with a big smile.  He even smiles at me in the middle of the night when I change his diaper.
-has officially found his right thumb and always has it in his mouth.
-wears a size 3 diaper and 6 month clothes
-smiles and laughs at his sisters
-loves to be talked to and loves to talk back.  He coos all the time and likes to blow raspberries.
-finally decided that his Papa was all right.
-starts out in his own bed but still ends up in my bed.
-sits in his 'pink' bumbo and bouncy chair
-starting to use his legs to push himself around backward on the bed.
-doesn't care to be on his tummy
-weighs 15lbs 8oz

For All My Mom Friends...

Yesterday, I had a little pity party after looking at a few pictures of myself.  I was shocked at what I saw because in my head I still look like I did when I was post baby #2 ( I lost all my baby weight fast after Maddie)!  Anyways, after having a pity party, I started reading Out of the Spin Cycle by Jen Hatmaker and realized just how silly I was being.  Yes, I still have a lot of weight to lose and it is really coming off SLOW, but I will eventually return to a new normal for me.  It would also help if I would STOP eating so much junk and cut my portions down, but that is for another post :)  I thought I would share Jen's thoughts on this very topic for all my mom friends out there.  Hope you enjoy!!

Those Are the Prunes

Every mom has a stack of books she's read to her children so many times that she could close her eyes and recite every page by memory.  With these, you can't get away with turning four pages at once or skipping entire paragraphs...not that I've ever done that.  Our family had several hall of famers: the Carl series, Alligator Baby, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and all books by Shel Silverstein.  (Just last week, Sydney called Caleb into her room to "Do devotionals together," and when I peeked in on this preciousness fifteen minutes later, they were reading their favorite poems from Fall Up to each other. Well, it's a start.)

Anyhow, one book we read endlessly was Everywhere Babies, which made me choke up while reading about every one in three times.  Each page discussed one element of babyhood, in all its diversity.  One said:
Every day, everywhere, babies are fed- by bottle, by breast, with cups, and with spoons, with milk and cereal, carrots, and prunes.

Little pencil drawings illustrated each feeding option, and Gavin-probably five at the time-unexposed to the term and taking his best guess, pointed to the nursing mother and said, "Those are the prunes."
Touche.
Childbirth and the human body combine as a formidable team, with definite collateral damage,  When Caleb recently sauntered into the bathroom while I was getting ready and asked, "what are all those scratches on your stomach, Mom?"  he was permanently uninvited from the bathroom scene.

I don't mean to shock you, doves, but our bodies change after childbirth.  They really, really change.  I sprouted curls in previously stick-straight hair, and my feet grew an entire shoe size by the third baby.  I now walk around on skis.  My hips have never returned exactly to their former address.  I nursed three babies and need not mention what a mess that left.  What used to be a smooth stomach now looks like a topographical map of France. And to top it all off, I can't jump on trampolines anymore without peeing in my pants.

Traditional Christian advice about this subject generally makes me feel violent.  People, I am not standing naked in front of the mirror, quoting Scripture to my reflection.  If this approach works for you, then by all means carry on.  But it comes up short for me.  It's like looking at a garden salad with fat-free dressing and saying, " I love you.  I am thrilled to be eating you instead of a delicious burger with a side of beer-battered onion rings."

Because here is the deal: it is okay to be a little bummed out by your stretch marks and saggy situation.  If you tell me you adore your new hypersensitive bladder and adult acne, I'm going to call you a liar and unfriend you on Facebook.  Some of the bodily changes that come with childbirth stink, and I'm giving you permission to feel that way.

That said, I'm going back to something Jesus taught.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Luke 12:22-23

Your body is more than clothes; it is also more than loose skin and bigger feet.  Our bodies nourished babies and brought them into this world.  (I'd like to see one man endure this-the human race would be extinct.)  Our bodies run through our husbands' minds twenty times a day, wider hips notwithstanding.  Our bodies deserve a prize for enduring the marathon of early childhood: lifting, carrying, bending, squatting, wrestling, holding, lugging, running, chasing, pushing, and rocking.

Our bodies have allowed us to experience the intimacy of marriage and the marvels of motherhood.  They gave us a backstage pass to wonders like nursing and childbirth.  They've worked hard, our bodies, and they deserve a little love.

My girlfriend heard a sermon by a husband-and-wife team on marriage, and the wife stated in front of thousands of people and a television audience: "If you weigh more than ten pounds over your wedding day weight, you need to go on a diet."  I'm sure there were multiple hits taken out on her life.

Girls, we don't need to be within ten pounds of our pre-baby, twenty-something weight, but every woman knows she feels better when she is taking care of her body.  Taking care means we are feeding our body food that will nourish it and protecting it from destructive habits.  It means we care about health.  My 93-year-old grandma, whose body is broken and collapsing from the inside-out, told me sadly: "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I would've taken much better care of myself."

This is my one and only body.  This is the skin I will still be living in forty years from now.  This heart is the one I'll be counting on; these hands are the same ones I'll use to hold grandbabies.  It doesn't look the same as it did fifteen years ago, but that body was young and untested.  This body, the one I'm living in now, is responsible for three beautiful children who now occupy this planet.  It carried them, birthed them, and still had enough left over to raise them. I'm proud of it, even if I don't love all its aesthetics.

Your body is more than clothes.  It is your friend and ally.  It is the vessel that will carry you for the rest of your days, until you shed it for your permanent glory.  In the meantime, treat it with the respect it deserves and the attention it requires.  Granted, it's given you a boob situation you didn't ask for, but you once fed it Sonic for eight straight days after the restaurant's grand opening just up the street (oops).  Let's call it even and declare a ceasefire.
Peace.
From Devotions to Lighten Your Mother Load: out of the spin cycle by Jen Hatmaker

I love this little book!  It really has helped me through some of my "Mommy" crisis moments!

Days 19 - 22

Here are the Christmas books we've been reading these past few days:
Merry Christmas, Curious George by Margret and H.A. Rey's
The Crunchy, Munchy Christmas Tree by Karen Gray Ruelle
The Littlest Christmas Tree: A tale of growing and becoming by Janie Jasin
Counting Christmas by Karen Katz
The Christmas Story by Carol Heyer
Max's Christmas by Rosemary Wells

Other Happenings:
- Sawyer has started laughing or at least he tries to laugh!
-Maddie cried because she didn't like a Christmas present Granny Boyd gave her.  She threw a big fit and didn't even want to hold the present.  I was so embarrassed!
-Aunt Linda came for a quick visit on Monday.  She took the girls to see the movie, Tangled, and then stayed around to play with the girls, while Sawyer and I had a girls night at Barbra Sue's in Merkel.
-Zoey finally decided that she could make her own bowl of cereal.  She has never even attempted to make her own food, until she watched Maddie make herself a peanut butter-n-jelly sandwich.
-I've stayed up way to late for the past week and have eaten TO MUCH holiday candy!

That about sums it up for now, believe me there is more to come.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Doctor, Doctor...

Emma Claire and Tomas playing doctor.  You can tell that Emma Claire has been to the doctor way to many times because she just got up on the table and laid down so he could listen to her heart beat.  The poor girl has a horrible ear infection that just doesn't want to go away.

Boyd Christmas 2010

We celebrated Christmas with the Boyd Family at Mimi's house last night.  We had to arrive after dark because Mimi had a big surprise for all the grand kids.  After opening presents in the house, we all went outside to see the big surprise (a new fort/swing set), and the kids LOVED it.  I got an old pie safe and Lane got a new gun.  We had a very Merry Christmas!

Tuesday School Christmas Party

Thursday was our last day of school and our Christmas party.  We had a blast reading Christmas books, opening presents, watching Frosty the Snowman, and eating all kinds of goodies!  I got lots of yummy teacher treats and the girls brought home tons of Christmas sweets, so we have been on a sugar high since Thursday!  We made several precious keepsakes to send home to mom and dad.

I made them with my hand
which is part of me.
Now each year when you trim the tree
you'll look back and recall
Christmas of 2010,
when my hand was just this small!

All Work and No Play...

This weekend was full of work and not much play for me.  I am in the process of catching up on the moving business books since I haven't done anything in several (12 to be exact) months.  Big changes are coming to our family and I need to get my stuff together so that is what I worked on this weekend.

On Saturday, Joetta took the girls to the ranch to make Christmas cookies and I spent the day working.  I am proud to report that I really got a lot accomplished and should be able to finish in the next day or two.    I also got our Christmas letter written for the Christmas card this year, so now I just need get the cards in the mail and I will be doing good.

Lane spent the weekend, with Jorge, at the State High School Football games in Cowboy Stadium. I think they had lots of fun and didn't spend all their money on the expensive concession stand food.

Dazed and Confused...

That is how I have felt these past few days.  So prepare yourself for a really random and crazy post.  I find myself falling a sleep while I am trying to write my posts, so that's why they jump around sometimes.

Here are the books we've been reading.   Yes, I have actually read all of these books to my children.

Days 14 - 16:
Merry Christmas, BIG HUNGRY BEAR! by Don and Audrey Wood
On This Special Night by Claire Freedman
Follow the Star by Rachel W.N. Brown
Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzger
I've Seen Santa! by David Bedford

These last few days have been a whirlwind. I'm so tired I can't even tell you what we have been doing these last few days.  I know that we made rice krispies, chocolate peppermint crinkle cookies, and  peanut butter sandwiches (which I forgot to take and they are still in our refrigerator) for our Tuesday School party today.  I taught ladies Bible class, we built a ginger bread house, I tried out Zumba for the first time, and I stayed up until 2 am the past three nights.  Maddie and Emma Claire are feeling much better and are already back to their old ways.  Sawyer still likes the turkey magnet and has even been sleeping in his own bed.  It makes me sad to put him in his own bed at night but he sleeps so well by himself.  Lane and I just finished watching the HBO series, Pacific, and I loved it.  I think I cried in almost every episode.  Well enough of my random chatter, I will post about more of our daily adventures  tomorrow if I find some time to myself!
