After much TLC we are now enjoying some zucchini, crook neck squash, carrots, and onions from our garden! We have 3 zucchini plants, 2 crook neck squash, 3 butternut squash, 4 bell peppers (green, red, orange, and yellow) green onions, carrots, cucumber, strawberries, and 16 tomato plants! Some of the plants we started from seed and when we planted them after about a week they didn't look to good! Jared went and bought a bunch of starters from the nursery. We had to replace the 6 original pepper plants ...they all died as well as all 3 squash types. Long story short, our seedlings that were struggling, took off so we have double the harvest!!! We've been able to share with our neighbors because we have squash coming out our ears.
The kids have enjoyed taking care of the garden and get excited to see all that is growing. We believe our garden is doing great because of the many prayers for it! Cameron especially ALWAYS remembers to pray for our garden and when he's done with his prayer he gets this cute smile on his face and tells me that he remembered to bless the....(then he points in the direction of the garden!) It is so cute!
The second picture is of our lovely squash bugs. I went out one morning to find a bunch of these little bugs all over one of the zucchinis and clusters of tiny brown eggs on the underside of many of the leaves! I was grossed out! I called the Utah State extension and they told me I had to use a dust pesticide to get rid of them. I wasn't comfortable with that so I went to Jerry Baker's web site to look for a solution! He is a master gardener and has answers for EVERYTHING! I found a 'tonic' to use on the bugs and it works like a charm! It has garlic, onion, cayenne pepper, liquid dish soap, and water. You spray it on and within seconds those buggers are DEAD! It even works on grasshoppers and I'm sure much more!! We (our whole family) are so thankful that our garden is bearing much and are thankful for all we have learned in the process along the way!!
