GREAT STRIDES 2012

Image

It's that time of year when GREAT STRIDES is on my mind 95% of the day!  Saturday, August 25 8:00 am can't come soon enough!  This is a picture of this year's t-shirt.

Here comes the part where I ask you to make a donation or join our team...

From our GREAT STRIDES page (link at the bottom):

Mackenzie had her annual CF review at the end of June and it was a great one. Her lab results came back as normal, her pulmonary function test results improved, her nutrition was in the "green zone", and her lungs sounded clear!

When you hear this, or look at her, or know her positive attitude, it's easy to forget that she WORKS HARD to stay as healthy as she can - two hours of treatments a day when there are a million other teenage things she'd rather be doing, a crazy amount of meds (I'm thinking of taking her circus act of swallowing a giant handful of pills in one gulp on the road), a constant cough that makes people stare, always remembering to carry enzymes because she has to take them every time she eats...the list could go on, and she makes it seem effortless.

Even though she works hard, cystic fibrosis is always something that is with her...too often she coughs and can't stop or it's hard for her to breathe. Sometimes the nature of CF is that no matter how hard you work, it's two steps forward, one step back. "Breathe Easy" - In the CF community, when we lose someone to cystic fibrosis, that loss is almost always accompanied with the words "breathe easy"...and it breaks my heart every time. For so many reasons. Of course, the main reason being that we lost another brave CF patient to this horrible disease. But, also because, it is so sad to think that only in death can a CF patient truly "breathe easy". Recently, Mackenzie was having an emotional day - anyone who knows Mackenzie knows these are few and far between (but 100% okay and earned), I told her that I wish she could give her CF to me, and she would not even let me say it. She said she wishes no one would have to have it. I wish that, too.

Mackenzie turned 15 on July 21. When she was born the average median age of survival for someone born with cystic fibrosis was 31 (now it's late 30s). With advancement in research and the wonderful job Mackenzie does in taking care of herself - of course we don't think that this is her "middle age", it's a time when she is becoming a beautiful young adult with plans of college, teaching, art, having a family, being a friend - so even a passing thought of this being her "middle age" is unbearable. It's an average, but we have already lost too many others with cystic fibrosis along the way at all different ages - 3 years old, 7 years old, 8th grade, 18 years old, 35 years old (and so many, too many, others that we didn't know personally)...this reality is also unbearable.

As we always say, cystic fibrosis is only one of a million things that make Mackenzie, Mackenzie. But, it's also a part of the reason that she is brave, determined, responsible and has a loving heart for others. As I watch her becoming that beautiful young adult with plans of college, and teaching, and art...I know she will succeed at all of these things, but my Mommy heart can't help but wish she could spend less of her energy fighting CF and more of her energy focusing on the great things her future has in store for her.

There are AMAZING things happening in CF research, and we are so blessed by the generosity of our friends that have aided this research for the past 15 years. I hope one day soon I will not have to ask this question anymore, but for now...

Will you please join our team for Great Strides 2012 and help us raise money to find a cure for cystic fibrosis? Not just for Mackenzie but for everyone living with cystic fibrosis. So they can ALL "breathe easy", while LIVING!

Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month - May 1st

Image
This is my smart, strong, beautiful daughter, Mackenzie. It's Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month! She is 14 and was diagnosed with CF when she was four days old. Cystic fibrosis is only one of a million things that makes her, her. But, it's also a part of the reason that she is brave, determined, responsible and has a loving heart for others. Hopefully, I'll do better this year at posting a fact a day.

(Posting these on Facebook, but thought I would blog them too!)

Happy Birthday, Jason!

Jason's birthday was yesterday and we were ready for him! Checked our Cozi app for a few things he had on his wish list and made his pie on Sunday since he likes his desserts "next day".  First off, I don't bake.  I love to make anything else unless it's baking.  This is an EASY Coconut Cream Pie and I can't tell you how many times I've messed this up!  Burnt pre-made pie crusts, burnt toasted coconut, etc. etc....But, I was patient and only had to make it once this time.
Image
Our family date to celebrate Jason's birthday included a trip to a furniture store to look for a recliner.  We (I) have a lot of requirements for this recliner including 1) Small scale (there is only one spot where it can go) 2) Doesn't look like a recliner 3)Doesn't lean too far back.  Jason pretty much realized that he probably isn't getting a recliner.  If any of you know where we can get a very small scale recliner that doesn't look like a recliner, I'm open to suggestions!

Then we went to P.F. Chang's.  And, I was so confused the entire time!  WHY would Jason choose P. F. Chang's for his birthday dinner?  I thought he was joking all the way until we were actually seated and ordering!  He doesn't like Chinese food, or any other Asian foods (and he's married to someone who is half Vietnamese! His daughter gave up rice for Lent one year because she loves it so much! Hello!?).  Oh well, I enjoyed his birthday dinner and I got this pic of him and the girls afterwards:

Sisters, Weekend and Dance

Project "Get Back Into Blogging" starts now!

If you came over from Kelly's Korner, I have two girls - Mackenzie is 14 (and will be 15 very soon) and is in 9th grade, and Peyton is 11 and is in 5th grade.  I love being the Mom to two girls and am very lucky that they love each other and that so far the teenage years and preteen years have been good to me (knock on wood!).  I often joke that when I'm around boys that I find myself doing that head tilt thing since there are some things boys do that are so different than girls!

One of the things I love about having two girls is seeing the different mix of their personalities - some things are very similar and some things are complete opposite.  One is definitely more like me and one more like her Dad, but with a crazy combination of the other parent mixed in, too. They are three years, three months apart in age but four years apart in school so in our district they've only had one year where they were at the same school.

They are kind to still let me blog about them because in my mind they are still 1 and 4 or maybe 3 and 6 ,but, no way are they really 11 and 14!  It all goes by too quickly!

This past weekend we kicked off summer.  In March.  Crazy!  I've enjoyed the cooler temperatures we've had this week!  Mackenzie had a few friends over to swim before we kicked off a busy dance competition.
Image
Peyton can now do her own HAIR and MAKEUP for competitions!  This makes me so happy because I am so bad at it!  I really don't know which I'm worse at.  Just when I do a bun or a poof and think I'm worse at the hair, I have to do a smokey eye and think I'm worse at make-up.  Thank goodness for the other Dance Moms and Peyton for helping with hair and makeup!

Every year the girls get a "lil sis" at the dance studio and this year Mackenzie had two!  She hit the lil sis jackpot because they are so great, we love them. Mackenzie with Chloe and Olivia:

We LOVE Peyton's "lil sis", too!  Peyton is holding Abby, here.  That's Chloe and Abby's real life sister, Bella in the picture with them. Can you keep up?  There's a quiz later!

Instagram on my iPhone is one of my favorite apps (also available for Android users this week!), I thought it was so sweet when I went on Instagram and found this picture that Bella (in the picture above) had posted:

2 Months

I just saw this on a blog:

The Jobes

How does this happen?  It makes me so sad because I love looking back on blog posts from years ago and not posting means not recording things in our lives.  I post on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram but I really want to get back into the groove of posting HERE!

Halloween 2011

The girls had a great time last night.  Our Native American went over to a friend's house and we took our Boxer Girl downtown to Central - my favorite place to Trick or Treat...how I imagined it when growing up and so many of the neighbors there make it so much fun.

Pinterest Inspired - Muffins

Peyton was making muffins and it reminded me of something I saw on Pinterest (except they were painting and it was a paint can and paint brush). I thought it would help with that dripping part of making muffins and cupcakes. I just washed the rubber band and put it around the mixing bowl.

She said it helped. Or, maybe she was just being nice.

KDA Dance Recital 2011

More dance pics!  The girls had their dance recital and got to spend the entire day doing what they love!

I had to steal this off Kerri's Facebook page of Abby and Mackenzie.  I love it!  And, at the same time, it makes me so sad that Mackenzie looks so grown-up in it.

The girls in some of their dances (they also performed all their competitive dances but since I've already posted pics of all those, I thought I'd give you a break!).

Helpers

As soon as the girls were out for summer vacation, they decided to go back to school!  They went to their old school (where Mackenzie attended all through elementary, K-4, and Peyton went K-2 until we moved to a different zone) and helped our friend Amy with her 1st grade class (there are two schools in our district that are on a "non-traditional" or "year-round" calendar).  Amy teaches in the class that both my girls had when they were in 1st grade!  It's crazy they were both in the same room - Mackenzie with Mrs. Cooper and Peyton with Mrs. Burrow since there are 5 or so 1st grade classrooms.

Here are the girls with the class.

We ran into Lydia - also there helping -  while we were there.  Mackenzie and Lydia went to school there together.

Below are pictures of Peyton with two of the teachers she had while she was there - Mrs. Burrow (her 1st grade teacher) and Ms. Lange (her 2nd grade teacher).  Her Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Gauthier moved to a different school a few years ago.  Two of Mackenzie's teachers are still teaching there - her 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Chambliss and her 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Robertson but they were out that afternoon, so no photo.  Mackenzie's Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Malloy retired, her 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Cooper went to a different school, and her third grade teacher, Mrs. Bingham moved to the school where Peyton just finished.  Mackenzie job shadowed with Mrs. Bingham a couple of months ago.

Here are the girls with Amy (Mrs. Ford).  They had such a great time!  I think they want to go back and help again when Elm Tree starts back up (a couple of weeks before they start back).
