Square Foot Gardening

Image

So Shane and I decided that we wanted to have a vegetable garden this year. We picked a corner and Shane dug up all of the sod...and the very next day my sister Mary Jane told me all about square foot gardening. I was sold. You make boxes and fill them with a special blend of 1/3 compost, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 peat moss. They only need to be 6" deep, and then you divide the box using a grid. It's an easy way to organize all of the garden yummies you want to plant. Today Shane put all the sod back...because you don't need to tear up your lawn, you can just put the box on you lawn. And you don't need a huge garden to get a lot of vegetables. I feel really bad Shane went to all that work because I changed my mind...isn't he the best?

Here's some of the basics of square foot gardening: (you can find more info at

What is Square Foot Gardening?

No Work, Simple & Easy, Organic, Raised Garden Beds

Square Foot Gardening is a uniquely simplified method of gardening that produces 100% of the harvest in only 20% of the space -- AND -- without all the hard work and drudgery of single row gardening.

Precious Pals

ImageSo I was taking my Sunday nap when the little voices of Caleb and Jessa playing finally woke me up. I walked out of my room to see this. They dragged all the books off the bookcase and Jessa was "putting Caleb to bed." She's sure getting a lot of practice. She was reading him books, or pretending to read. In one book she said the little girl's name was "kooky mucka." Now that's a book I have got to read. :)

I found Caleb in the closet, snuggled up in our dirty cloth's basket. I asked him: "isn't it stinky in there?" Caleb said in a very serious voice (just look at his face) "no it smells good."

Well I wouldn't want to lay in the arm pit of a stinky shirt but I guess if you're two it might be different.

Painting and the Favorite Hat

ImageJessa's been begging me all week if she could paint. I see why it's funner than crayons...but I don't like the clean up! We must make sacrifices for our budding artist...

Caleb in his hat. He loves it. Doesn't he look so so so cute?

"Beach Weather"

Image
Image
Sunday and Monday we had beautiful weather. I think it got up to 78 degrees. I was in heaven! Then, Tuesday and Wednesday, the temperatures dropped. The highs are now in the 40s. I have been moaning and groaning over this change. Shane said that's just how Spring is. I guess I just don't remember. I just want to sit outside with no jacket and soak in some sun!

Jessa and Caleb played outside in the chilly weather for 2 hours. They had so much fun. I'm glad that my bad attitude didn't rub off on them. They took off their shoes and filled their socks up with sand (whatever makes you happy my dears). At dinner time I went to round up my little ones, and Caleb sat shivering in the sandbox, with a runny nose. I said "are you cold" "noooo I'm not cold" Caleb stutters. "Do you want to come inside?" "noooo I want to keep playing!!!!" Caleb replies.

My lesson: 40 degrees can be fun. You just have to think like a four and two year old. :)

Kids Say the Darndest'

So I wanted to ask Jessa some church questions just for kicks.

mom: who is Joseph Smith?
Jessa: He's Heavenly Father's Daddy

Don't worry people, there's still time.
