Oakland cleans up its act?

So, I'm getting off the freeway a couple days ago and saw some graffiti. Someone had spraypainted "F Word" on a building, instead of the actual F word. I thought to myself, how considerate. Maybe that gangster just read Catcher in the Rye. Maybe Oakland's an okay place after all. Then we fell asleep to the sound of gunshots in the distance that night. Good old Oakland.

Seth's first A's game

I promise I'm not trying to confuse the boy. He is first and foremost a Giants fan. That being said, I'm a firm believer in reserving the right to root for two teams if they are in different leagues. (The Giants are in the National League, the A's are in the American League). Having lived in the East Bay for a while now, I've grown a soft spot for the A's great pitching and exciting style of play. So I root for both (except when the A's play the Giants, in which case I root for SF all the way). However, I vow to never root for the Padres in San Diego (they are in the same league and division as the Giants). Anyway, I don't think Seth was too confused because he was rarely conscious as the A's beat the Reds, 5-3.

The Tritons?

UCSD it is. Lindsay and I are very excited to try something new and start fresh. It's so nice to finally know where we're going to be. It's been over a year with this application process. It's gonna be tough to leave the bay area though.

Seth slaps his mom in the face?

Well, he may as well! Like a lot of babes his age, Seth breastfeeds. While I try to focus on the lovely feelings of the bond it creates between us, and the ego-feed of being able to sustain such a cute creature off of my secretions--Seth likes to remind me that I'm not all that. I'll latch him onto the breast, and sometimes he'll taste the milk and get this look on his face like it came from a carton that expired last month. It really hurts my feelings. I tell him I'm giving him the good stuff, and that I swear it's fresh. Eventually he'll settle in and relent to drinking it, but on occasion he still likes to flip me off while he's nursing. That's right, he'll lay there sucking away, but with his hand resting on my boob with his middle finger up, just to send me the message--I'll drink your stinking milk, but I don't like it. This week he started biting too. I know they say not to bite the hand that feeds you, but a dude must have written that, because the breast totally trumps the hand.

UC San Diego?

So today we were offered admission at UC San Diego. This presents another tough decision that we need to make. We have a week to choose between UCSD and UC Davis. Hmmm. Anybody have any suggestions?

UC Davis?

The latest news is that I got into the UC Davis School of Medicine. Since time is running out before the school year begins, Lindsay and I were forced to make a decision between Davis and USC. As much as I really wanted to go to USC and be clinically trained in the LA County Medical Center, we decided that UC Davis (whose medical center is actually located in Sacramento) would be a better choice for our family. So at this point it looks like we'll end up in Sacramento for the next 4 years. (There is still a chance we could end up at Stanford, UCLA, or UCSD--we're on the waiting list--but UC Davis looks like the most likely destination). Aside from the heat, Sacramento sounds pretty good for the most part. Maybe we'll even buy a house and pretend we're real adults.

Some baby making noises? Who cares?

Keep in mind that the following videos are probably only interesting to grandparents. I thought they'd appreciate the boy doing his tricks.

Wow?

Am I a horrible mother?

Can I summarize the last 2 months in pictures?

The biggest change in our lives as of late is the arrival of our son. Seth Neil Rutman was born Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 at 9:40 am. He weighed 6 lbs. 12 oz. (3.06 kilos), and measured in at 19.88 inches (50.5 cm). Since then, he has been pretty awesome company. He is now almost 11 weeks old--here are some pictures chronicling his first couple months of life on planet Earth.

Seth's first trip to the beach - Santa Monica, 4/27. We were in LA looking at USC, so his first beach was in SoCal--I know, it's a shame. We have since taken him to gloriously overcast Santa Cruz--he definitely preferred that.

Lindsay says that Seth needs a break from games for a while. I think he enjoys them.
