A Very Eventful Plane Ride 2012

As most of you know I'm very sporadic with my blog posts and I don't find much time to blog.  So I've been asked by some close friends to share a story with all of you!  On Thursday, November 15, 2012, our family and Justin's parents, Jim & Diane were on our way home from San Diego, California after Meghan, Justin's sister, and Aaron Szawielenko's beautiful Wedding & a fun trip to Disneyland & California Adventure!

We enjoyed our morning with Anita "Needle", Aaron's Mom before we needed to be to the airport!  I believe we had to be to the airport at 1:30 pm to board our 3:25 pm flight...you will later realize how this time didn't mean much later!  The shuttle came to her house to get our luggage (we were in California for 10 days, so we had plenty) and we headed off to the airport.  Needle dropped us off out front and the shuttle dropped Justin and Jim off at baggage check.  Diane and I were realizing that we weren't seeing the guys, so we should figure out where they were.  Needless to say we were at the front entrance by the letter "J" and they were at "R", in the right location, so we had a trek on our hands with Simon & Zoey in tow!

I want to say we had to walk at least 1/2 a mile, at least it felt like that, before we reached them.  Our legs were tired and by the middle of this walk/jog.  Zoey was okay cause she got to be held, but Simon was too heavy for Grandma and I, so he was walking and his little legs were getting tired and he wasn't afraid to let us know!  I learned in a 10 day period that I was not in the mood for fit throwing, but at this point I knew he was hurting and I felt bad.  We finally arrived at "R" and we headed in...I started to smell something, but I didn't know what.  We all grabbed the luggage and Grandma & Grandpa headed up the escalator followed by Justin.  This is definitely where it started to get hectic...I had my purse, diaper bag, Zoey's bag, and Zoey on my hip, and a luggage bag on wheels in my hand.  Simon was next to me attempting to get on the escalator.  It didn't go so well, I wouldn't be suprised if ever gets on another one for awhile.  He stepped on and his foot was too much on the edge and he fell backwards, he did keep his head up, thank goodness.  As this happens I start to get on...not a good idea the bag on wheel slips and falls down the escalator.  In the mean time, I get Simon standing up and crying, Justin and his parents are trying to get lugage and Zoey to help out, so I can get the suitcase.  I turn around to find a mother yelling "OMG is he okay!", she also has 3 kids watching the whole thing!  She helps us with the suitcase, as I am trying to console Simon as we get to the top and check for scratches, etc.

We find the line at the top of the stairs for checking our luggage.  As we're standing there, Justin starts to smell something, he starts smelling his shirt, his armpits, the bags, you can tell he smells something sour!  This is the same smell that I smelled right before the escalator incident.  I told him I washed his clothes as we only had 5 days worth of clothes for the 10 days we were there!  So then onto smelling my own shirt...it wasn't on me.  Next to Simon and then to Zoey...what possibly gave her diarreah?? And it was on her pants and going up her back!!!  I was determined for us or anyone around us on the plane to not smell this!!!  We had just got to a kiosk to get our boarding passes and check our luggage.  Justin's Mom was eagerly doing this!  I found a pull-up, unzipped the luggage that was going to be checked and got clean pants for Zoey and stuffed the stinky one's back in the luggage to be checked.  I was not running to a bathroom, so I found a spot at the front of the line on the floor and proceeded to change Zoey.  I know that some of you are grossing out right now, but we were to the point that our plane would be leaving in about 30 minutes and we hadn't made it through security yet!!!  So it had to be done and I don't know where the time went!!

After I finished changing Zoey and I went to the kiosk where Diane was and realized that it wasn't working!!!  She moved to the next one and it printed our boarding passes out!!  Thank goodness!!!  Diane told Justin and I to take the kids to security and they would finish checking the baggage.

As we arrived at Security, Simon's curiousity set in and he asked question after question.  Justin and I were getting our coats off, bags off, shoes off, Simon was still wondering why they have blue rubber gloves...we get our stuff in the buckets, I take Zoey through the arches and it beeps...in my head I am thinking...you've got to be kidding me and what on me could be making this thing beep!  I am a jewelry lady and I like to wear my jewelry, but I swore I took everything off...I soon checked my wrist and I had a watch on!!  I was cleared from getting patted down!!!  YAY!! Justin and Simon also made it through with no beeps!  We got our buckets and were re-dressing ourselves and putting bags back on, not knowing how far we would have to run to make it to our plane!  And wondering if Diane and Jim ever got baggage checked since they only had 2 people working the counter and would they make it onto the plane in time.

We were in and found our gate to be right behind where the security was, so as we get there...there is NO PLANE!!!  Justin's parents arrive shortly after us and we find out that our plane hasn't even arrived and it is about 3:20.  We then begin to realize it isn't going to be there for about 15 minutes and we will arrive in Houston about 30 minutes before our flight to Wichita will leave, hoping all goes well!

During our wait time and trying to pull ourselves together and rest from the activities that just happened.  Not thinking that we DID have lunch at Needle's we got more food to eat.  I must of thought we better have food, since our trip from Wichita to San Diego, got diverted to Ontario, CA (2 1/2 hours away)and then we had a 2 hour wait until we were bused back to San Diego and no food places open.  I certainly didn't want that to happen again!  We also got drinks and Simon must have been thirsty with everything going on.

I was trying to figure out what Zoey possibly ate or drank that morning to give her diarreah and then I began to smell that sour smell again.  So I got another pull-up and headed to the family restroom.  Justin's Mom was with us and had got Zoey changed and not a minute later we could smell it again.  I went out to get another pull-up, I hadn't brought her bag in with me, because I didn't think it would be that quick!

We headed back to the chairs to wait for our Group #7 to be called to board the plane.  The people working annouced that any large items you have would need to be gated.  So that meant that the stroller that the lady at baggage check would not take and said the weight was good on it would have to be gated...not a big deal.  Wichita Airport checked it because the weight was over 25 lbs and the San Diego Airport said it was fine...it was weird.  It wasn't a really big deal, but later you'll know why I mention this!

Finally, we are aboard the plane and in our seats...and you guessed it...I smell something sour!!!  Then I wonder where am I going to change Zoey?  The Lavratory...you got to be kidding me...do you realize they don't make those accessible to change diapers or pull-ups!  I can barely go to the restroom myself in one of those things.  So, I tell the flight attendant I desperately need to change her, before we leave and she directs me to the LAVRATORY!!!  So as I go in, the toilet seat is down and so I think to myself, that is disgusting laying her on there to change her, but I don't want diarreah all over myself and her either.  Luckily, when I checked her, it wasn't that bad, but it was on her pants...so I took her pants off and her pull-up and got her changed.  As we walked out of the Lavratory, the flight attendant was standing there and I had pull-up in hand.  She told me to use a throw-up bag and she double bagged it with a plastic bag, and she took it.  I'm not really sure where, but I gladly gave it to her!

As we arrived back to our seat, Justin's Mom wanted to trade seats as she was sitting between Justin's Dad and Justin and you can only imagine what they ate the days leading up to our flight home.  Needless to say after what I am about to share with you, she is happy she didn't switch seats!  Justin said that while we were gone, he had looked over to Simon who had his fair share of pop and water, wiggling in his seat whispering to himself, "I need to go potty...I need to go potty...I need to go potty!"  Justin got up and took him to the other Lavratory at the back of the plane!  So the Schrag family had taken up the only two restrooms on the plane!!

The Pilot of the plane came over the intercom and announced that the seatbelt sign had been lit, so we were to stay in our seats with our seatbelts on for take-off.  In my mind, I was thinking I'm glad we are seated and on our way home!  God had a more exciting plan for me in the next 10 minutes...the seatbelt light is on and the sour smell that keeps rearing it's head from Zoey is BACK!!!  I know I looked at Justin as I was horrified, because when I lifted Zoey up off her seat with her seatbelt still on, there was diarreah all over the seat and I couldn't do anything as the seatbelt light was on and we were taking off!!!  I grabbed for napkins in the food bag we just got for lunch and began wiping under Zoey, so it wouldn't be all over her for our next trip to the lavratory!

I then realized Simon is wiggling around in his seat and yep...you guessed it...he had to go pee again!!!  At this point, I did not know what to do...I told him to tell me the color of the sky, the wings, the ceiling but, it WAS NOT WORKING!!!  I looked over to Justin and he handed me a WATER BOTTLE!!!  I was seriously horrified now, I was going to have to have my 4 1/2 year old son, pee in a bottle, much less one that was a 1/4 full of water that I was trying to quickly drink!!!  With his seatbelt down and bottle down there...he tried to go with little spurts.  As this was happening, I glance out the window and realize that we are lifting off the ground and I look back down as gravity is making the water/urine, come back towards us.  I took the bottle away, covered Simon up and he preceeded to have full force of pee coming out all over himself and the seat! AHHHHH!!!  Simon was in tears and honestly I am quite surprised I wasn't either!!!

We get up in the air and the seatbelt light is not going off, so I unbuckled Simon and changed his clothes right in front of his seat and then put a pamplet that the airline provides us with on his seat, so he wouldn't be sitting in wetness and then buckled his seatbelt.

I had to wait to get up with Zoey, but once the stewardests were walking around, I figured I was free to get up and change her!  This time I had to lay her on the toilet seat lid...ugh...I know...but, I...let alone the people around me didn't want to smell diarreah!!  I got her changed and got her pull-up doubled bagged and tumbled out of the lavoratory.  The stewardest was right there, I asked her if they had anything to clean/cover up the smell of diarreah, because my daughter had an accident.  She graciously gave me one of the "1st Class" blankets and a coffee pod (coffee grounds in an enclosed filter).  I told her thank you and that I would actually need two because my son had an accident as well, during take-off.  She told me was sorry as she handed the second one to me.  We headed back to our seats, the lady in front of us told me that the kids were well behaved and I was doing a good job!  Needless to say, she didn't know what happened 15 minutes before, but she did when I asked her if she could smell poop!  She said that she could not, which was a good sign!

I cleaned Zoey's seat off with paper towels and a small spray tube of Purell I had in my purse, I placed the coffee pod on the seat, blanket on top, then Zoey, and put her seat belt on.  She was good!  I only had one pair of pants left for her to wear and I wasn't willing to give those up, because it was in the 40's in Wichita!  Simon's seat got cleaned with the Purell the coffee pod and the reading material was laid down.  Simon said down and buckled his seat belt!  I then leaned over the seat where some teenage boys were sitting and I asked them if they could smell poop, because my kids had accidents.  You may be thinking, I can't believe you asked them this, but I did not want anyone around us uncomfortable for the next 3 hours!

The rest of the ride to Houston was uneventful.  I did happen to look over to Justin after all had been cleaned up and him and his Mom were giggling.  He swares that they weren't laughing at us.  I am sure that you are laughing now as I have when re-telling this story!  I leaned over to Simon and asked him for a hug...he looked at me as if he was in trouble and said, "Are you mad at me?"  I told him him, "No...it was out of our control."  To be honest, giving Zoey Soy Milk, which she doesn't drink and Apricots, which she rarely has and giving Simon too much to drink before the flight was crazy!

I learned a lot from this trip!!! And I couldn't wait to get home, but we had to actually make it to our next flight from Houston to Wichita.  The Pilot annouced that we would be making it into Houston and there were flights that would be departing very soon and those that were boarding those planes would need to get off first!  That was us, we had 20-30 minutes to get to our Gate which was located ACROSS THE AIRPORT!!!  It was definitely a run to get there!  It reminded us of the "Home Alone" movies when they were in the airport!  You will have to watch them if you don't know what I'm talking about!  We did make it and were off the ground as soon as the baggage was loaded!

As we sat on the plane, I realized that I hadn't heard from my sister Kim who had offered to have their van taken to the airport that morning.  So I text her to see if it was there...after the day we just had...I was not expecting her to say that it wasn't, but that is exactly what she said.  Diane told me to call her parents to see if they would be willing to pick us up at 10:45 pm.  I felt terrible for calling them, but they were more than willing to come and get us and I am thankful for that!  When we arrived in Wichita, we got our baggage and the stroller that we had Gated in San Diego, wasn't there.  The lady that Gated it only had sent it to Houston, not Wichita, we didn't know this until we got to Wichita!  And there was no way we would of had the time to get it and get to our plane in Houston on time!  So on Friday, our stroller was personally delivered by the airline at 9:30 pm at night!

That is our very eventful plane ride for 2012!  Will I fly again?  Of course...next time I will try to be better prepared!!!
