Smile when you say that, wingnut

Suddenly the wingnuts are saying “Nazi” like it’s a bad thing.

Am I alone in finding it a bit ironic that the wingnuts’ latest pet name for Obama is “Nazi?”

I grew up surrounded by pending wingnuts.  They’re all in full orbit now, and the one thing that grew along with them (or rather, remained stunted along with them) is their fondness for saying things like, ‘Hitler had the right idea.”  Ha ha ha.  You see, they were referring to the Holocaust.  It was supposed to be a joke.  No, I never laughed.

I was under the impression that when the Bush administration did Hitleresque stuff — you know, all that spying and torture and propaganda and various Bill of Rights violations — it was perfectly fine with the wingnuts.  In those days I shrugged and told myself that this was because Hitler was okay with the wingnuts.  After all, he “had the right idea.”

Come to think of it, he didn’t much like black people, either.  Apparently this was another “right idea.”

And now, judging by the number of hits I’ve have on one of my other commentaries, one of the wingnuts’ big heroes (aside from Sarah Palin) is apparently Ahnold of California — that nice citizen of both Austria and the U.S. who once publicly supported Kurt Waldheim.  (Read the link to find out why this may be just a little hard to take if one is truly anti-Nazi.)

Obama, on the other hand, has done nothing like that, and he is half black, but yet now he’s Hitler.  And suddenly that’s bad.

Okay wingnuts, you’ve lost me.  Not that I was ever yours in the first place.

Um….never mind…

Big news of the day is that Sarah Palin kinda wants us to forget her “death panel” remark, yuh know?   See this for details; see this for Keith Olbermann’s eloquent and impassioned response, which I could never hope to match except to say that if Obama doesn’t get to allegedly err on the subject of Grey Poupon or beer, Ms. Rinkeedink sure doesn’t get to do so when she actually invents something as heinous as “death panels.”  Certainly she shouldn’t get to skip away from such a statement unscathed.

Anyway, maybe this retraction is not such big news.  I cannot find one person who is surprised, although I did find a few who thought Palin’s own  remark was just the liberal media trying to make Sarah look bad.  Scratching your head?  So am I.  But they could not explain how this worked, especially since a few Republican pundits and politicians are now also describing her remark as “crazy.”

No matter.  It’s just the latest of Sarah’s cries for attention.  Move on; nothing to see here.

What someone tried (and failed) to make big news of was the White House’s “warning” to the Fat Man that the whole Nazi thing is going a bit too far.  The Huffington Post  commented that the Administration “struck back hard” at Fat Man and his sty of piggies.  I read the Administration quotes, and if someone had said that to me…kiddo I wouldn’t even have blinked.

Fact is, there is nothing the White House can do to Limbaugh without wandering off into the same territory that Bush wandered into with so many of the rest of the population.  Bush got away with it, but only because he had the delusionals on his side.  Unfortunately for the Obama White House, the Fat Man still has them on his side, and any real action against the Fat Man will only spur more goofy claims of “Nazism.”

Actually the word Nazi was applied to Bush many, many times — but often with good reason.  In those years there was an avalanche of government spying on citizens and propaganda to try to excuse it, if in many cases this was nothing more serious than listening to two teenager girls giggle about boys on their cell phones and/or the “no news is good news” of Fox News.

Yes, dears, it happened.  And it very nearly went much further than merely listening in on phone calls and feeding Fox News fluff stories.  We have the memos to prove it, remember?

There is no good reason to apply the same red letter to Obama (not yet, anyway); however, there’s the fact to contend with that the delusional right wing has never needed a good excuse to do whatever it goddamn well pleases.  The “liberals” applied the title of Nazi to Bush with some cause, so now the “conservatives” feel they can apply it to Obama without cause.  Nyah, nyah, nyah.

Just look at Sarah Palin as an example of this sort of person.

Oh, wait.  She said “never mind.”
