Christmas Cheer!

•December 2, 2010 • Leave a Comment

For some reason, the last few years I haven’t really been in the Christmas Spirit when Christmas time comes around. Not that I’m not grateful and excited about Christ’s birthday, but I just haven’t felt that good ol’ Christmas cheer, but this year it’s a different story! I am loving that it’s Christmas time. It may have something to do with the fact that we live in our own place and I get to decorate the way that I want to or maybe that we get to go be with all of my extended family in Maryland this year. Whatever the reason, I’m just glad to be excited.

I’ve taken up sewing recently (can you believe it?), so everyone is getting something homemade this year. You all better love it! And for those that don’t get an actual gift, they’ll be getting a fabulous picture Christmas card from Shutterfly. We sent out Shutterfly Christmas cards last year and everyone loved it. I’ve visited a few family members that kept our card on their fridge all year! Some call that cute..others would say, um…bootleg. Shutter fly has a lot to offer when it comes to Christmas Cards. Check out this, this, or even this and make your Christmas experience as cheerful as ours!Image

33 years ago the love of my life was born. I can’t say how thankful I am for him, who he is, and who he is becoming by the grace of God.

Babe, I hope today is full of joy for you and that you truly feel celebrated. We all love you and are glad to call you friend, brother, cousin, son, and best of all, husband. 🙂

I love you baby!

Great Day

•April 3, 2010 • 2 Comments

Not only was it Good Friday -an awesome time of reflecting on what that day represents for believers in Christ Jesus, but it was just a beautiful day overall. I went to work and my boss let us go early, so Yancie and I went to the park with our blankets, books, and snacks.Image

The theme of my day turned out to be “new beginnings”.  The weather in St. Louis is crazy, to say the least, but this week it seems that spring is finally here. There is something psychological about spring, a fresh start, green leaves, and new growth that’s rejuvenating.  And while the sun feels good against my skin and fragrant flowers fill the air, none of that compares to the new beginning we have in Christ. Because of His death and resurrection, we are given the gift of freedom, freedom from the bondage and slavery of sin. What good news!Image

And while we’re talking about fresh starts, there’s also a picture below of my painted toes! Many of you know that I like to keep my toes fresh now that they’re out of the closed toe shoes and yesterday at the park was the first time this year that I painted them. I let them take a break over the winter, but we’re back in business! Image

Oh, and to top it off, Yancie and I went out dancing with a few friends last night. There’s a new place opening up downtown and they gave free Salsa lessons on Thursday and Ballroom lessons last night and we had soooo much fun. We’re hoping to take some lessons if it works with our schedules.

Ready or Not!

•March 31, 2010 • 3 Comments

So today is that last day that I can reach into the candy bowl that sits at my desk and munch on sweets throughout the day. It kind of snuck up on me a little quicker than expected, but nevertheless, I think I’m ready!

I know a few people that gave up sweets for Lent and they’re dying to be done. I’m actually hoping that this temporary goal will be the kick start of a more nutrious lifestyle for me and the hubbs again. Not that we don’t eat well, but you can always do better and we’ve kind of slacked off in doing right by our bodies.

So for all of you who are with us during the month of April, I tip my hat and say let’s do it! Some people are giving up just certain things like carbonated drinks, so if you’re still on the fence about joining us, just pick one thing that you would like to give up instead sweets all together.

Anyway, this is my reminder post that tomorrow is day 1.  I think I can, I think I can…

Best Wishes!

Surrounded by chumps!

For some reason I thought that  all of my friends would have  that “go get em” enthusiasm that helps push you across the finish line when all your energy is spent. But…not this time. I do have a few folks that have joined us on this no sweets challenge, one of them being my mom – which made me smile, but there are very many that have said, “I can’t give up my sweets!”

You people are killin me! On my last blog I mentioned a few friends that previously tried the challenge with us to no avail and NICOLE MARIE (BRUNO) MEDLIN daughter of …(just playin) said, “go ahead and say my name!, you don’t have to hide it!” …. she’s so big and bad, but leaves her poor friend out in the cold, with no blanket, to get frost bitten toes that might fall off, then she’ll need help walking and…. sorry. It hurts Nicole, hurts bad.

ANYWAY, this is another feeble attempt to get folks to get on board with us. It’s only a month. Are you down?!?!?!?  or what? Let’s get it!

Everybody give it up for April!

•March 17, 2010 • 2 Comments

Who is April you ask? Why no, it’s not a person… and no applaud necessary, YET! April is the month that we’re gonna give up sweets. Since 2006 when we went all year, the hubs and I haven’t been able to give up sweets for any amount of time, so I figured if I “tell the world” we’re doing it and invite everybody to do it with us, then maybe, just maybe, that will be enough accountability to get us through.

Yes, I know that there’s a holiday in April, a very important holiday at that, but if I wait for the best time of the year to give it up, it will never happen! There are a few couples that have tried to do it with us this year to no avail, so here goes nothing! Are you in or what?! It’s just a month. C’mon…be a buddy.

Event FULL!

•March 12, 2010 • 5 Comments

Yancie and I have been having lots of fun lately, and have been very very busy. We’ve had many friends come through the Lou and various exciting things happening…like friends having babies and stuff. 🙂

I’ve been exhausted, but a good exhausted. Extrovertishly, I love having people around all the time, but these old bones aren’t what they used to be and I could use about 3 or 4 days of sleep. Looking forward to a restful weekend started by a seminar tonight ( I hear you saying…that’s not restful!) but I’m excited about it and think it will be very informative, and therefore bringing some solace and satisfaction is some weird way. Ha! I’m so funny.

Anyway, you can check out the link here about the seminar tonight. I really think it will be good.

Ok, something funny. My husband told me on Sunday that he absolutely could not believe what I did and thinks it was one of the most bootleg things I’ve done since we’ve been married. So, last Saturday night we went out and the soul of my boot started to separate from the shoe in the back. I didn’t really notice it til we were almost going home….and thought to myself, “man! guess I gotta take it to the shoe repair to get it fixed”.

Well, Sunday morning it’s time to go to church and I had on an outfit that i REALLY wanted to wear my boots with, and the weather here is starting to break so I felt like I won’t have many more opportunities this year to wear them so YUP, I did it. I put on the broken sole boots and wore them to church. And to make matters worse, the sole started coming apart more and more and by the end of church, I’m flapping around like I’ve got on flip flops!!! Yancie could do nothing but laugh at me cause he couldn’t believe I wore them in the first place. And after I thought about it, I laughed with him cause I can’t believe I’m so ridiculous.  What we won’t do (or will do!) to be cute.

So here I am doin my thang! Shout out to my ladies that will wear something broken, torn, ripped, gotta hole in it, won’t latch right, tied in a knot, glued on, or whatever else, just to be cute. A cryin shame!

Soooorry…

•February 2, 2010 • 1 Comment

It’s been forever since I’ve posted. I’m sorry. As time passed I just couldn’t get motived to blog because there was so much that I had missed and I didn’t want to have to go back and play “catch up”. But then I started thinking…this is MY blog. I do what I want on here!

This seems to be a trend in my life, I stop doing things because I feel like I’ve failed in some way by not staying on a rigid course (that I make up in my mind). I stop calling friends cause I don’t want to play catch up – failed, I stop journaling (probably haven’t done it in a year) cause I don’t want to play catch up- failed, stop spending time in the Word because I missed a day..which leads to 2 days, 3, 4….weeks, months – failed.

But where do these rules come from? And why are they so debilitating? I guess God really did know that we would be influenced by this world, the culture, the “norms”, and various expectations. So His command to renew our minds really is for our own good. So often I get stuck on me and how I’m perceived and what others think that I forget that I’m not it. I’m not the one on which I should focus . By renewing my mind I would remember that what I do, whether I eat, drink or WHATEVER, I’m to do it all for the glory of the Lord. So if I miss a few days of blogging, it’s okay. The purpose of these posts should be to honor God -encouraging others and bringing friends and family along on the story that God is penning for the Yancies.

So in recognizing the truth, I take back the “I’m sorry” and replace it with a Hello Again! We simply took a small hiatus to enjoy the holiday with the fam and friends and we’re back! I’ll list the things we missed and we’ll keep it movin 🙂

  • Yancie’s mom and Meda’s Dad came to visit.
  • Took Meda back to GA and she’ll be starting college soon.
  • Spent most of the Christmas break alone in the North GA mountains – much needed.
  • Saw precious friends in ATL and Augusta.
  • Yancie was a groomsman in Julian and Mary’s wedding on Jan 2
  • Started a new semester in school
  • Went to a St. Louis University Basketball game – had seats on the court! – compliments of a co-worker.
  • Just found out that my brother Eric and his wife are prego again!

Here are a few pics

Pah-tay!

We are well into the season of Christmas parties and last weekend was the first of a few for us. We had my company Christmas party at a nice Italian restaurant on “the hill” (the area of St. Louis where you’ll find the best Italian everything). Lorenzo’s had really good food and it’s the same location we had our company party last year. The party started at 4:30pm on Sunday, which is nice cause you’re not out really late spending precious sleep hours with people you normally wouldn’t “choose” to hang with. No, I shouldn’t say that, I really like my co-workers, but I’m still glad we ended early. ANYWAY, we had a lot of fun. There’s a pianist that my CEO hires each year playing while we eat , a really fun guy and he can play just about anything. Well during dinner, this guy is playin good songs and for those of you who know me, how can I not sing a long?! So my CEO says, “oh yeah Kristal, you have a great voice. Why don’t you sing us all something?” ….I’m thinking, yeah i can hold a note but I really am no soloist. I just know how to fool people into thinking so with a little head bobbin and raisin of the eyebrows. So I just kinda laugh him off and keep eating. Get this – he starts clinging his wine glass to get everyone quiet so that Kristal can sing us all a song! My arm pits immediately start burning  – I’m caught. How do you tell the CEO of your company no after he’s just made everybody be quiet and all eyes are on the two of you? Well, I managed to buy myself some time with the whole “but I don’t know what to sing” card. He bought it for a while until another co-worker, Colleen, and I started playing around and singing again. So they convinced the two of us to go up front and sing a song, the problem is we don’t know all of the words to any one song, so we end up just mumbling after the first two lines of a song, so what are we gonna do up there? Have no fear! – we’re in the technology age and another co-worker looks up “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” on his Iphone. So here we go! By that time, the mood of the party was so relaxed that it actually wasn’t that difficult to go up there. I took my microphone (spoon) and the Iphone and Colleen and I (thereafter named Ebony and Ivory) went and just had some fun.  Oh what a night!

White Christmas?

•December 3, 2009 • Leave a Comment

So I’m sitting at work (mind you, that’s where some of the best blogging takes place)  and the tips of my ears are just beggining to defrost after running an errand in the city for my boss. I must say that today was one of the first days that I’ve actually felt like winter was here. I was walking rather quickly (since this walk counted for points on the “wellnes board” -see previous post-), and I could feel the cold air rush down to my lungs. Gotta say I kinda enjoyed the chill. We also had our first snow last night, but the ground wasn’t cold enough for anything to stick, makes me wonder if we’ll have a white Christmas 🙂

well, well, wellness

Again we had a dear friend come to visit us from South Africa, by way of Georgia,  here in the Lou. Stephanie Garrett flew in on Saturday morning and spent a few days with us. We had a really good time. Always good to see old friends.

On another note…

A  few people at my job agreed with me when I said that we need to get the folks in the office a little more healthy. So I created a competition that has been working “well” thus far. We’re having a Wellness Competition and it’s ON! You’ll see below, the competition score board that has been working out splendidly :-). There are various ways to score points, like drinking a glass of water (10 pts), eating a serving of fruits or veggies (20 pts), taking the steps to the 6th floor restroom (30 pts), taking a 20 min walk (40 pts) or flossing and brushing your teeth after lunch (50 pts). The winner gets dinner for 2 at a really nice restaurant here and of course bragging rights! After a few weeks, I’ll tally the points and see who’s a little weller than the rest!

Stephanie helped me make the board while she was here.

Fabulous Weekend!

•November 5, 2009 • 1 Comment

A couple of weeks ago a friend from high school (Jackie) contacted me on facebook to tell me that they were planning a baby shower for another one of our friends (Nicole).  Initially I was thinking, here’s another special moment that I’ll have to miss cause we live 8 million miles away from the people that are dear to me, but after I snapped out of it and repented for my stinky attitude, I couldn’t stop thinking about the shower. Usually I don’t even attempt to make it to these type of events because I know we can’t really afford it, but for some reason I felt strongly that I should go. I talked to my husband and he told me that if I really felt like I was supposed to get back to GA, then check for a deal on flight. I kept looking and there were not really any “great” deals, but eventually it went down to something we could handle, so I booked em!

Can I please just tell you that it was a WONDERFUL trip! Not only did we surprise Nicole at the shower (hadn’t seen or talked to her in years), but I had some sweet time with friends and was able to meet some sweet babies that I’d never met and had only seen in pictures.

Also, now that I’m married, it kind of feels weird to sleep alone, but I found that in the evenings I was able to have some good time reading and praying and just being alone. Don’t get me wrong – I missed my man, but the time away was good for both of us. Now that I’m back we’ve been flirting like boyfriend and girlfriend again.

Although I didn’t get to see everyone I would have like to, it was a short and sweet trip that I’m very grateful for.

Camping

•October 29, 2009 • Leave a Comment

We were invited by Kelli Mayfield to go on a camping trip last weekend to help celebrate her husband PD (aka Vitamin P)’s birthday.  When we agreed to go with them, I don’t think we anticipated Friday night’s weather.

Yancie and I got to Meremac State Park at around 7pm cause I had to work. The Mayfields and the Fisks had already been there for several hours and set up camp. Ok, so I guess I need to add this part… We were not “roughing it” by any means and we don’t’ claim to have done so. Yes, the bathrooms were about 50 feet away and yeah, Wal-mart and Lowe’s were 10 minutes down the street,  so for all you seasoned campers out there that are looking at the pictures thinking “really?”—- chill out! lol.

So we get there and its doing this annoying drizzle, but we got the fire going and enjoyed some delicious chili. After some conversation, smores, and wet and frozen toes, we headed to bed (or i guess sleeping bag). Thankfully they had a tripple tent and set up the extra part, so we didn’t have to set up our tent in the darkness and rain. Not everyone did, but I slept well and enjoyed listening to the rain tap on tent through the night. We woke up to an incredible breakfast – grits, eggs, bacon, toast,  blueberry muffins, and bagels all prepared on the fire except the grits. We stuffed ourselves then sat around for a while and had some awesome conversation. It’s so good to hear from people who are kinda in your same boat and understand your joys and frustrations.

Saturday turned out to be a gorgeous day and we played a little guy vs. girl football. You know who won!

The Fisks had to leave a little early, so we packed up our stuff and then went on a hike with the Mayfields. It was beautiful. I loved rustling through the leaves and getting some shots that barely capture the actually beauty of what God has made.

We got home Saturday evening, unpacked and chilled the rest of the night. Woderful little camping trip!

On a different note, we’ve started attending a Kingdom Group. It’s small groups from our church that meet sometime during the week for fellowship. Our group met on Sunday night and we discussed the sermon from that day. It was really an encouraging time, neat to hear from others and to hear the different perspectives and lessons that God is teaching us.

So we had a pretty good weekend overall. I’m encouraged to “press on” !Phil.3:14

Sick as a dog!

•October 22, 2009 • 2 Comments

Well last week after coming back from a great trip to Chi-town (where Veeda got me sick), I spent the whole week in bed and on the couch :-(. I went into work on Monday and my boss sent me home! I stayed home Tuesday and tried to return to work on Wednesday and he sent me home again and said don’t come back until you’ve gone to the doctor. Everyone thinks that if someone coughs they have the swine flu. Yes, the swine flu is serious, but can’t it just be a cold!

Anyway, my husband took good care of me, even missed a class because he had to get me some lemons from the store. I know I normally sound like a man, but I could’ve passed for Barry White last week. I am soooo grateful that I feel much  better.

Thanks Honey for taking care of me in the midst of preparing a sermon and doing all kinds of other work! Love you!

And thanks to those who called or texted to check on me. I am blessed with great friends.

Oh, and thank you God for healing my body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All my single ladies! (Bobbin my head while typing)

•October 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Ok, we’re actually all married, but we’ll be without hubbys this weekend. 3 other lovely ladies and I are headed to CHI-TOWN this weekend! My friend Veeda loves to go on/plan excursions and she convinced us all to go even though none of us have ANY MONEY! Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and go have some fun.

We’re leaving at like 8am tomorrow morning and driving, hopefully to arrive at around noon or 1pm.

I’ll be sure to take lot’s of pics and let you all know how it goes when I get back!

HOLLAAAAAAAA!

Metro, Oh Metro

•October 2, 2009 • 1 Comment

It’s Friday morning and the weather here is crisp. Can’t wait to see the leaves turn and sip on some apple cider. I absolutely love this season!

As I stood on the platform waiting for the train, I could feel the chill of the wind fight its way through the tiny holes of my cotton sweater. I looked down the tracks to see the headlights of the train coming, thinking to myself, “Yep, timed it perfectly again, man I’m good.” 🙂

I jumped on the train and found an empty seat, which is rare these days since they cut a few trains to save money in this “rough economy”. I snuggled in and relaxed for the 30 min ride.  After a few stops, the train began to hesitate. I didn’t think anything about it cause sometimes if the train is too close to the one in front of it, the conductor has to slow down and give it time. Well, it did it again at the next stop and the conductor said “Ladies and gentlemen, this train is now out of service, and everyone will need to de-board at the Forest Park Station.” Great, now I’m gonna be late for work. So I called the office and left a message for my boss letting her now that I’ll be a few minutes late.

But that wasn’t the interesting part of my morning. When we boarded the next train, it was already full, so we had to pack in the isles like a bunch of sardines. When this happens, it’s like people forget that the train is gonna move, so people don’t really hold on, and we all kind of fall into each other when the train takes off. I was one of those idiots today, and I fell into the lady behind me, but she was sweet and asked if I was ok. I was thinkin “I just fell into YOU, are YOU ok?” but I didn’t say that. I just told her yes, and thanked her for asking.

While I was standing there, there was a smorgasbord of smells that invaded my space (the space I was currently sharing with the rest of the sardines). Someone had definitely just finished off some weed before they got on the train, it was strong! I’m still feelin good…ha, just playin. I think the lady standing in front of me still had the smell of last night’s dinner in her hair, Asian Cuisine. From behind, the lady that asked if I was ok was killin some winter-fresh gum, she made MY breath smell good! Then there was this stinch that I couldn’t quite place. I was discretely looking around trying to find the owner of this smell, but I couldn’t. The next stop was the Central West End where all the doctors, nurses, students and professors get off because Barnes Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are right next to the train station. I think the employees actually get free Metro passes to cut down on parking.

Anyway, after the mass exodus, I found a new spot, standing in the “foyer” section behind one section of seats and in front of another. As I leaned on the glass, I found the owner. A black lady in her 40’s or 50’s was sitting there taking up both seats, using the inner seat for her belongings. She had with her a grocery bag with about 3 different size coke bottles, most half empty and a broken styrofoam food box. Next to her bag were two big FedEx envelopes full of smaller FedEx envelopes with a couple of magazines and St. Louis tour brochures stuffed in.   By the looks of her, she was homeless. She was wearing three shirts, had on shorts and flip flops and a black headband. She had one earring in the left ear that was an orange ball the size of a gobstopper in one ear and its twin was used as a nose ring (a completely different earring in the right ear).

If she was homeless, what would the FedEx envelopes do for her? I began to pay attention to what she was doing. She had in her hand a broken gold bracelet connected to a silver chain. She was bending the bracelet back and forth and couldn’t seem to get it to make a circle, so eventually she just left it. She held it up, and admiring her deformed, “stylish” pendent, she decided to put on her new piece of custom made jewelry. This whole time, I can hear her mumbling to herself and every now and then blurt a few curse words, giving off a big hearty laugh that would make people turn and stare. The gazes didn’t faze her.

She couldn’t get the necklace to fit over her head, so she left it there, snug over her headband. She was setting new trends with this broken pendant dangling in her face. Maybe she used to be a designer.

Maybe she used to be a school teacher or even a court clerk?  a bagger at the grocery store, or a stay at home mom? Who IS this woman? Who WAS this woman, and how did she get here. Where was she going? Did she have a destination, was she going to visit family, or was she just along for the ride?

She stayed busy after finishing her new jewelry. She moved on to shuffling her papers. She would move papers and envelopes from one place to another as if preparing for a very important meeting.

Then all of a sudden we hear the annoying voice of the metro officer “I NEED TO SEE ALL TICKETS, PASSES, OR TRANSFERS PLEASE!”  I’m convinced that their system is all about making money. Why not have everyone pass through some type of gate and swipe their cards to get onto the platform? Instead, they randomly send officers on the trains to catch people who didn’t purchase or forgot their tickets. If you’re caught, it’s a quick 80.00 fine. Another money maker, oh well.

I was anxious to see what the lady would do to my teacher, designer, clerk, sahm. Would she treat her like she was treating everyone else? Or would she do the expected?

The expeted. “YOU NEED TO GET OFF!” Loud and clear causing everyone to look. She said it a second time and tapped the lady on the shoulder.

“Don’t touch me!” she mumbled as she gathered her belongings. When she got up, she grabbed the blanket that she had been sitting on. I wonder if that’s what she covered up with on the street? She got off the train and walked away from the officer. Didn’t seem that the officer cared either as she was occupied by a passenger caught without a ticket – she would get some money from that one.

So I was left to my thoughts for the remainder of the trip, accompanied by the stinch left in the seat. Just like us, she was a person who will make a mark, whether good or bad. Makes me think about how life can so easily turn for better or for worse. What’s keeping me from becoming that woman or what will cause me to be her? As I sit here writing this blog I’m encouraged to ponder God’s grace today.

Here’s the pic, wish i could have gotten one from the front.

3 day weekends

•September 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Don’t you just love it when you have Monday off?! We sure did. I think having Monday off helps me enjoy Sunday cause I’m not thinking about going back to work. Don’t get me wrong, I really like my job and am grateful for it, but there’s just something about being at home.

This weekend we were graced with the presence of Carl Rogers, one of my husband’s college buddies. I kind of felt bad that we didn’t do much in the city, but according to him it was good to just get away from the busyness of work in Los Angeles.

This weekend we get to go to Maryland to a wedding and my niece’s first birthday! I absolutely cannot wait to see her. It will be so much fun.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I know i need to step up my blogging game. Pray for us as this semester is full and we’re going to be busy.

The Fruit of My Labor

•August 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Well kinda, but not really… Some of our friends from the seminary gave us a tomato plant that had not yet begun to bear fruit after they visited our house to see my weak attempt to start from scratch. Altough my little pods of various plants didn’t quite “survive”,  the tomato and basil that we recevied have been nutured tenderly and therefore, are makin mama proud!

I’ve never really done the garden thing before, so this year we were treading in waters unknown. So for all those who have smart comments (MATT!), keep them to yourself cause I’m knew that this thang 🙂

Anyway, here they are….my little babies.

Hard work folks!
