Friday night was the Daddy Daughter Date and Dance at Addison and Harpers School.  I love this photo of the three of them.  Ricky was kneeling down, although Addison is sure she may grow taller than him one day.  Brooklyn got to have a Mom and Me night together.  Girls, you look just beautiful and Ricky, so handsome.  They've had a good week and have been taking care of Nana and Papas dogs while they are out of town.  They love that and often work in some hot tub time when they go feed the dogs and let them in and out.  Love it!

I LOVED this picture Tatia sent of Penny reading to Baby Charlie.  It was on the 11th of February and the first picture was taken the day Charlie came home from the hospital, just six month apart.  Baby Charlie still loves to listen to Penny read and she loves reading to him.  Next is the quilt I promised to share with you last week.  I LOVE how it turned out.  What a LOT of LOVE goes into making a quilt.  I loved that Tatia's Relief Society made this for that sweet sister who is so sick.  I know she will be able to feel the love and faith and prayers for her.  The next picture is miss Penny performing with her school class. It was the spring program and they sang several fun songs My Country Tis of Thee, a jazzy number, an African american spiritual, and a spanish song about manos, pies, and codos.  She loves school and did a gave a great performance. Tatia had an extra busy week as a sweet sister in her ward passed away.  Tatia was in charge of the  luncheon held after the funeral and it turned out just lovely.  What a blessing to serve others in their times of need.

I got a phone call while at the Family History Center on Thursday from Charlie.  It was awesome as he had a family history question.  A family that he home teaches, is preparing to go to the temple to be sealed together.  He said they needed to take a Family Group Record to the temple with them.  I showed Char where to find them on Family Search.  I loved that their was one question I could help someone with and I was glad it was my Charlie.  What a lucky family to have you home teach them Charlie! I'll be thinking of you all on March 16th when you get to be in the temple.  YIPEE!!

Pierce and Adelaide had a Daddy Daughter Date night too, just like Ricky and his little girls.  What lucky sons I have who know how to treat their little girls.  And what lucky little granddaughters I have who have been blessed with such great daddy's who love their daughters all the way to the moon and back.  I can't wait to hear the details of this fun evening.  Looks like a white stretch limo waiting to pick them up?

Miss Elie is a climber.  She is very interested in so many things and likes to try new adventures.  I had the step stool out to get the kids missionary flags down from their shelves to put in my Olympic Centerpiece and Miss Elie headed right toward it.  She was so proud of herself that she could climb right up and stand there.  Believe you me, I was close at hand, but she was very confident.  She is great at climbing up my stairs, but what I did not know was that she knows how to come right back down again.  Most babies I know how to fall a few times to figure that out, not Elie, she just backed right up and came on down.  Again, I promise I was right beside her.  Thursday night Dick and I were invited to the Friends of Scouting Dinner.  It was held at the Sheraton Down Town and we were a little ahead of schedule.  We had 35 minutes to spend with Sky and Elinor.  We loved it when Kara got home from school just as we had to go.  We got to give her a hug too.  Fun times!

It's Sunday morning and I can hear some birds singing outside my window.  It's stopped raining and for that I am grateful.  We've had a very gloomy and wet week.  We started out the week way below our needed rainfall and ended the week way ahead of our needed rainfall.  It was such a delight when I saw the sun shine on Saturday afternoon.  I think I had forgotten what it looked like.  It was marvelous.  Speaking of delight, I had my Primary Activity Day girls over on Wednesday night.  We had an evening about the Sabbath and about how Isaiah taught us it was to be a Delight!  Everyone brought a soup can, emptied and clean and we made 30 suggestions of good things that we can do on the Sabbath to make it more of a delight.  I loved having those little girls at my house and speaking with them about how I love the Sabbath and how we can learn to make it a Holy Day.
Dick attended Little Philmont this weekend, it was Friday night and Saturday morning and they were sure grateful it didn't include a camp out as it would have been a wet one for sure.  It was well attended and many great principals were taught.  Dick learned much and was glad he went.
I got a new steam mop this weekend.  When I was at Tatia's she has one and I've been thinking that maybe I would love to mop more if I had one.  (he he he)  So off to Sams club we went and I did a bit of a Tom Sawyer trick in asking Dick if he's like to try it out, as it had some real POWER.  Oh my, he did a great job and my floors look beautiful.  Thank you Dick!

February 21st is a great day in our family.  My youngest brother, Jeffrey Michael Birks was born on that day.  He is a wonderful brother who I adore.  Sharing Jeffrey's birthday  just 8 years ago, are Luke and Owen Christensen.  They turned 8 on Wednesday.  Dick and I drove over early in the morning to their house in Frisco and took them an 8 is great sucker.  We love those little guys and are so excited for their baptism coming up on March 10th!

My sweet Dad is going to have another procedure done on Monday morning.  The doctors think that this time it will work.  Is there something about 4th time being a charm?  We are so hoping.  Dad is hopeful and trying to keep a smile close by.  What a great sport he has been through all of this.  Thank you for your prayers and concern.  I know he appreciates them as do I.
Have a good week, stay dry and warm.  SLY Robynn

It simply could not be Valentines week without reading this sweet story titled Valentine.  It's about a little girl named Heather who stayed with her Grandma on Valentines while her mama had to work.  Brooklyn, Addison, Harper and I all love this sweet story.  I have three little lambs that we always wrap up in blankeys and read the story together.  This year we couldn't be together, but we read it together via Face Time.  It wasn't quite as sweet as getting to put my arms around my little granddaughters but I loved it just the same.  Thank you girls for letting me share that with you.  I have a dear friend who is in the hospital this week and I took the book to the hospital and brought a lamb for her to have.  She loves that lamb and calls it her baby.  That made me smile too. Graypa and I got a sweet Valentines in the mail from Addison this week.  Thank You Addie Mae!

The Granges have had a fun week of Valentines at their home.  They got to deliver Valentines to all the widows in the ward and they loved that.  They made heart shaped pizzas for dinner which tasted delicious.  Tatia took them to the church parking lot to scoot about on the Scooters.  Very Fun and the next day they got to use their chik filet gift card valentine for dinner.  Tatia woke up early one morning with the inspiration of making a quilt for a dear sister who is in the hospital in Charlottesville undergoing chemo therapy for cancer.  She lives a few hours out of Charlottesville and Tatia's Relief Society has been visiting her and loving her.  So Tatia set up a modern day quilting bee and went to work.  Can't wait to show you when it's all finished. You are going to love it!

It was so fun all week to hear from everyone when they received their valentine cards.  I was glad that Charlie's family's came right on valentines day and they were able to go to dinner at chik filet.  It's a favorite spot for all of our grandkids, so good choice Graypa! This week Keelie and Callum have been very busy with spending extra time with their noses in books.  There school is sponsoring a read a thon and they have both loved reading.  The school earns book credits by how many minutes the students read.  They were both fans this year! Thanks for letting Graypa and I participate too!

Adelaide and Jackson were happy with their valentine card too and I loved this fun picture Stacy sent me to let me know it had arrived.  Thank you!  Pierce has had a crazy traveling week.  He started out the week in Houston, Texas and then on Wednesday headed north to Vancouver British Columbia until Saturday when he landed back HOME!!! Yipee!  There is no place like home and his littles sure love it when he is home. We had a sweet tender mercy with Pierce on Saturday night.  Dick and I were face timing with Lani and my Dad and Pierce face timed with Dick.  We were able to place the phones together and Dad could see Pierce too.  I loved it and when it was time to say goodbye, Pierce offered a beautiful family prayer for all of us together.  Thank you PJ!

This was Elinor's 2nd Valentines day and she loved wearing her new birthday valentine dress that Aunt Lani had sent to her.  She is such a dear little soul.  She came to Grammy Day on Tuesday and we had fun until it was time to take her to meet up with Skyler to go home.  We ran into traffic like I have never seen on Coit Road.  We sat at one traffic light for 38 minutes.  I have to tell you, Miss Elie was far more patient than her Grammy was.  I finally made a right turn from the center lane and went town a few streets and Skyler came and found us.  We discovered the reason for the delay was the funeral service for a fallen Police Officer.  After I heard that, I felt badly for being so impatient.

My sister sent me this photo of my dad on Valentines Day.  He had a pretty aweful one.  He had gone back to the hospital trying to fix the procedure they did on Monday and on the way into the hostpital, he tripped and fell.  He had 10 stitches and fractured his knee.  Not the day he had planned at all, but he does not complain, he carries on.  I loved seeing the notes of love and encouragement on his china cabinet windows.  He has lots of us loving him and praying for him that is for sure.
Dick and I watched the movie Wonder this weekend.  Have you seen it?  It truly touched my heart and I would recommend it to everyone.  What a great message it teaches.  Everyone should watch it often.

The High Priest Group had a social on Saturday night.  Dick and I were able to attend and I found out kind of late that everyone was supposed to bring something to share.  I had strawberries in the fridge and some white dipping chocolate and made some yummy dipped strawberry's in time to take.  They were all gobbled up.
Monday was my Mom's and Elie's Birthday.  I LOVE that the two of them share the same special day as Abraham Lincoln.  We had a day of service for my mom and what a lot of sweet things were done from special temple trips, to ding dong ditching cookies, to sewing something special for someone, to sharing Gram/Gigi stories with their kids.  It was a wonderful day to remember her all day long.  I hope your week has been filled with love too.  Sure love you, Robynn

Becky and her girl friends had a Galentines Gathering on Friday night.  One of the gals suggested that everyone wear their wedding dress to the event and they all except for two of the girls did.  One was expecting a baby soon and the other's dress was at her mothers several states away.  I was so impressed that after 13 years, they still fit.  Way to go girls!  Brooklyn, Addison and Harper took a trip to the American girl store to spend their Christmas money.  They sure found some fun things that put smiles on their girls faces as well as their own.  Happy Day!

It was Jake's birthday on the 8th and Tatia and the kids loved getting to spoil him on his special day.  They baked the yummiest chocolate cake and fixed all his favorites for dinner.  Then on Friday, they woke up early and packed up the van and headed to the Nations Capital for a get away weekend together.  They had a great time and stayed over night at a hotel.  The kids were thrilled and Tatia was able to attend the temple with her Relief Society Sisters on Saturday morning.  The Washington DC Temple is going to shut down for a few years of renovation.  they had wanted to go one last time before that happens.  Their new assigned temple will be Philadelphia which is even further away.  They are looking forward to their move in July to Medford, Oregan which has it's own temple. As promised a few weeks ago, here are pics of Keelie's Invention Convention.  She invented an Insta tent.  You simple give it a shake shake shake and it tuns into a lovely tent to use in an emergency or even take on camp outs.  I'ts the perfect size for her American Girl doll who has loved camping out in it.  I loved getting to face time with Grandpa Great and the Carmichael Thiots.  He loved getting to see them for a few minutes too.

Are you feeling very Olympic Today?  It was wonderful to get to Face Time with Pierce's family with Grandpa Great too.  Adelaide just adores Grandpa and he adores her. They were at Disneyland when they called and Adelaide had grown tall enough to ride the roller coasters.  SHE LOVED THEM!  She is one brave little Lady!   It was great to see them together on the phone.  I can only imagine how the LA Thiots are loving watching some Olympic Action together.  A sister came up to me in the temple on Friday and told me she had met my son in Provo a few weeks ago.  Her husband is also in advertising and he knows Pierce.  I loved having that sweet connection with her from Pierce.  I love it when people see my name and wonder if I'm related to other Thiots they know and love.   YES!!!

Tomorrow marks Miss Elie Rae's first birthday but since it will be a school day, Sky and Kara planned her first birthday party for Saturday morning.  Thirty Six people attended that fun event and everyone of us had a great time.  The theme was a Narwhal Party.  Until recently, I had never heard of a Narwhal.  I have loved learning more about them and loved the party.  Sky made this fun game where we could be blindfolded and try to get the tusk in the correct spot.  Ricky's girls loved it and did very well.  Kara made a darling cake and Elie was very careful about taking tiny tastes.  There were narwhal cupcakes, donuts, and the funest favor bags filled with Narwhal pop corn. YUM! I loved the punch bowl with blue punch with ice cream/ice burgs floating on top.  Yum again!  Thanks for inviting us, Graypa and I loved being there any sharing her first birthday with Elie!

I returned from  a week at my dad's on Wednesday evening just in time for my Primary Girls Activity Day.  We had the nicest time.  They were all invited to bring an ancestor with them.  They could share a story and bring a photo or something they had been given by their ancestor.  It was such a sweet evening to hear their stories and see what they brought.  My dear partner baked a beautiful valentine cake for the girls to enjoy after as we focused on how much we love our families.
On Tuesday  night, my longtime friend Judy Hall stopped by my dads for a visit.  It doesn't seem like it matters how long it's been since we've seen each other, it only takes seconds to feel like no time has gone by at all.  I loved getting to catch up with her and fell her love.  My dad loved seeing her too.
It was a very special week with my dad.  The morning after I returned my writing class was meeting.  The theme for our writings was "When someone showed up".  When given the assignment, I wasn't sure what I would write about but after the week I had been given, I knew exactly what I wanted to say.  I've posted that writing below this one.
I have a tradition for baby girls turning one.  The first ones in their family and that is to give them a white cradle.  My mom used to supply the baby dolls so baby Elie was the first one that I got to choose the baby too.  A few month ago, I found some fabric with narwhals on it.  I knew that is what I wanted to make the cradle bedding out of.  I put on my mothers favorite pink robe and went upstairs to my sewing room and spent a few hours sewing a little quilt, mattress and pillow for the cradle.  How I loved doing that and it seems like when I wear mom's robe, it makes it all the more special.
Dick and I had a choice opportunity on Friday night.  Elder Devin Durrant from the General Sunday School Presidency came to Frisco to do some training on Teaching in the Saviors Way.  Dick and I both LOVED being there and felt the spirit so strong on how to teach using the scriptures and truly teaching the doctrine to our families and those we are called to teach.  Oh it was wonderful, wonderful to me.  On our way, there was the most glorious sunset.  The western sky was streaked with every shade of pink.  I always thing when we have pink sunsets, that my mom has been helping design them that night.  It was truly a gram Sunset for sure.

Thank you all for your prayers and concern for my dad.  He's having another procedure in the moring to install his tubes/six shooters, back inside his body to drain to the bladder.  Your prayers are welcome once again.  Oh how I love that dad of mine.  Sure love you too, Robynn

When my phone rang, I noticed it was my older sister calling and when I answered it, she told me that my dad was on his way to the Emergency Room and was probably going to be admitted to the hospital.  My stomach got that knot in it that I often feel when I am too far away to be any help.  Do you know that feeling?
My sweet father is 89 years young, yes we’ve always thought of him as being young for his age.  Until recently, he really didn’t know he was in his 80’s.  He continued to do all the things he had always done including climbing on roofs to reinstall rain gutters or fixing swamp coolers for his rental homes, mowing his own yard, shoveling his own sidewalks; all the things that much younger men do.  I truly believe that he is about 40 in his mind.
Since my dear mother passed away 3 ¾ years ago, (as he recently reminded me) he has lived on his own and has done a good job.  He cooks his own meals, does his own laundry and keeps his house very well kept.  He may let his mail stack up on his desk, and he likes to save all his church news magazines and ads but other than that, it still looks like my mom is there with him.
But about a year ago, things began to change.  He started having more Pajama days as we call them.  He wore them on days when it just seemed like too much effort to even put on your coveralls which is what he wears and is most comfortable in.  They stay up, don’t require a belt and as his weight has dropped, that is important.  He loves them and looks great in them, but most days, Pajamas were just a better choice.
He has a nice home in Sandy, Utah where he has lived for the past 56 years.  It has lovely windows and is a very light home.  The kitchen windows have sliders that look over the mountains to the east and if you are up at the right time, you can witness glorious sunrises.  Out his living room windows you can look out across the valley to the west and have a perfect seat for exquisite sunsets. But possibly dad’s favorite windows are the south windows in the living room.  He has a very high ceiling and these windows go all across the south wall.
When he lies on the couch, he looks up there and can watch the clouds.  Dad loves the clouds, loves the different colors from dark gray to white and puffy.  He loves the shapes they form and often sees his sweet dog Dante, a darling white poodle that passed away, in the cloud shapes.  But beside the clouds is the sunshine that comes through.  He loves to lay on the couch for an afternoon nap and have a sunbath as we used to call it.  The sunshine pours in and warms him while he rests.
What used to be an afternoon nap, has turned into a most of the day rest as he lies on the couch and enjoys the sunlight and warmth.  Each day as I call him, I’ll ask what he is up to and he’ll say he’s just lying on the couch waiting for me to call.  I love our visits.  He often tells me stories he has shared before. I don’t mind one bit. I love hearing his stories and just spending time with him.
Before my mother passed away in June of 2014, I would talk to her every morning for an hour.  She always answered the phone and we would visit.  On a rare occasion, Dad would beat her to the phone and we would visit, but not very often, she was fast at picking up the phone.  So it’s been a real blessing for me these past years, to get to talk to him each day.  He loves hearing what is going on in my life and likes to keep track of my kids, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren too.  He always wants to know how everybody is doing and what is new in their lives.  He tells me what he had for breakfast or I may have to remind him that it is time to eat and make suggestions of things he might fix.
I’ve asked him if he would be interested in having “meals on wheels” bring him a meal each day.  He assures me each time I’ve asked that “NO! He is capable and doesn’t need that service.”  My sisters and my niece are great at dropping off things for him, but he has truly lost his appetite lately.
So when my sister called last week, I knew I wanted to be there.  Dick arranged for me to fly out first thing (6:00 am) on Wednesday morning.  I knew if I told him I was coming, he would not be happy as he doesn’t want to inconvenience anybody and would tell me not to come, so I didn’t tell anybody I was coming.  I got on the plane, got off the plane, got on the light rail TRAX train and road to the 90th south stop where I called my uncle who lives close by to give me a ride up the hill to the hospital.  It was a great plan in my mind, but when it turned out Uncle Mike was in Denver visiting his sister, I went to plan B.
I called my older sister, who was at the hospital with dad and after just a few seconds on the phone she said the doctor had just come in and could she call me back.  She hung up before I could ask for a ride. Next it was plan C. My little brother Jeffrey, (ok, not so little but 7 years younger than me) was just coming home from working the night shift. He has a crazy work schedule, he works days for a few and then has a few off and then has a few nights.  I called him and was so glad that he picked up the phone. He said he would love to come and get me.
He had just bought a new to him car, a BIG BLACK Hummer.  I told him this was the fanciest UBER ride I had ever been in.  It was wonderful to see him and we drove together up the hill to the hospital.
We arrived at the hospital and found a place to park and got into the elevator and headed to the 2nd floor.  I was glad Jeffrey had let me leave my suit case in his car so I didn’t have to bring it into the hospital too.  It seemed like a very long walk to room 2111, but we made it and when I walked in and walked over to my dad’s bed he said these words, and I quote, “HELLS BELLS, what are you doing here?”
Now that was not quite the greeting I had pictured or wished for.  I thought he might say, “Rob, you came, I was so wishing you would come” or something kind and loving like that.  I should have known better. My practical, frugal, ok cheap dad would never suggest I come if it meant it would cost money.  After a quick hug, I knew he really was glad I was there.
We spent the next week together and had many special times that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
·         Organizing his important papers into a binder
·         Signing Birthday cards for the month of February
·         Finding a folder of letters written to him from his mother and having my sister read them aloud to us
·         Reading President Monson’s book of stories together
·         Looking a pictures of his brothers car he is refurbishing
·         Watching Stake conference together on his couch
Preparing simple meals for him in hopes they might taste good
o   His favorite was a meat loaf sandwich from Kathy’s yummy left-over meat loaf.
·         Taping Get Well cards on his closet door from Great grandchildren
·         Making his bed for him
·         Rubbing his back for him in the night when it hurt
·         Combing his beautiful hair for him
·         Washing his Jammies for him
·         Folding his handkerchiefs and making sure he always had a fresh one with him
But these will be stories for another time.  I love my dad, and hope he will be with us for a long time, but I know better.  These were precious days together.  I’m so glad “I showed up!”
