The more the merrier!

Standard

Since I’ve been at my current school, students make a self portrait every year. For the kindergarten project I interview each student and they collage their answers into their portraits. I love this project and how much personality is conveyed through their words. I also love printmaking with students but I haven’t had time to do much in the last couple of years. So I decided to combine two projects into one by having them make printing plates and use them to create the background of their portraits. I can’t wait to see how they each put their own spin on this project!

A new spin on an old lesson

A new spin on an old lesson

It’s been several years since I did my NC Lighthouse lesson with students. My third graders learn all about North Carolina and I have missed doing this lesson with them! I decided to mix it up a little and include a Van Gogh/Starry Night thread along with the space/color elements. Looking forward to seeing the results from this change!

We might add some sailboats to the water, depending on the time we have available. ⛵

Astronaut Portraits

Standard

My first graders have been learning about outerspace so I thought I would jump in and have some fun with foreshortening with some astronaut portraits. I made a step by step for how to draw. I think we will use oil pastels or crayons along with paint (mostly for the background.)

I’ll add more photos once we finish! 🚀👨🏽‍🚀🛸🌝☄️🌎

Klimt Trees and Kindness Grows

I recently came across the book, Kindness Grows by Britta Teckentrup and just fell in love with it. Then another art teacher posted a project of a tree inspired by Gustav Klimt and I decided I must bring these two things together for one of my grades. That grade is third grade and we will be creating these beautiful trees inspired by two other beautiful trees!

Collaboration + Black History Month

Standard

Image

We got a jump on February and celebrating Black History Month with this collaborative project. Students looked at this article on Beanz (a magazine for kids, code, and computer science) about Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson the ladies also known as The Hidden Figures. They are all mathmeticians, engineers, and pioneers who worked for NASA and helped pave the way for other women in math and science, especially women of color. We also watched this great video from Flocabulary and the kids loved it and even requested to hear it again before class was over.

The project is a two class project and each student will be making a piece of a large poster that features the three Hidden Figures along with a quote from Katherine Johnson. I found this poster on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Can’t wait to share the finished poster hanging proudly in the halls of our school!
