We checked off a few more State High Points over the last couple of weeks. Luckily most of the ones out here in the East you can drive to so being out of shape and pregnant wasn't an issue!
First we went to Delaware and summited Ebright Azimuth, elevation of 447 ft. We picked up some friends along the way and stopped in Baltimore for lunch. It was quite the experience with these guys.
A few weekends later, we decided hit a few more and make a roadtrip out of it since there are a few that are fairly close together. The goal was to go to DC's, Pennsyvlania's, Maryland's, and West Virginia's.
We first stopped in DC and found Fort Reno. The highest point is between a high school and a junior high in the middle of a field. We went to the temple right before hence the tie still on Todd and found no need to change since the high point is at an elevation of 409 ft! Most people don't even know it's there. I'm sure we looked weird looking for the seal.
Next stop was Pennsylvania. We were shocked to see so much snow. What was suppose to be a nice drive to the top of Mount Davis turned into a hike along the road because of all the snow. We weren't very prepared but we made it. We played out multiple scenarios of what we would do if all of a sudden I went into labor along the way. Our favorite was getting one of the local Amish families to pick us up in their buggy and take me to be delivered in their kitchen. Mount Davis is 3,213 ft above sea level and they have a nice observation tower you can climb up for better views.
Surrounding Mount Davis is Amish county which was interesting to see. We passed lots of buggy's on the road.
About a hour south is Maryland's state high point. It's kind of weird becuase you park in West Virginia and hike up the West Virginia side of the "mountain" and once you get to the top, it's Maryland. Hoye Crest is on Backbone Mountain and is 3,360 ft above sea level. They have a little mailbox up top where you can sign in saying you made it and you get a little certificate. Had it not been pouring rain and really windy, we might have stayed a while. It looked nice but we just snapped a few pictures and headed back down to the car.
As we were heading to West Virginia's state high point, we passed the smallest church in the lower 48 states and the smallest post office in the US. 2 very random things but multiple trip reviews said to see them so of course we stopped. The church can seat up to 12 people.
The plan was then to go to Spruce Knob, which is West Virginia's highest point. Once again we were stopped by snow. It was plowed all the way except for the last 5 miles. Seeing we had to gain over 1,000 ft in elevation still, Todd decided to turn around. I wasn't up for hiking 10 miles in the snow. So we'll have to make around trip out there before we move. It's in a beautiful area with lots of rock climbing so I don't think it will be too hard to make it happen. Anyone want to join us? :)
