History of The National Anthem–The Star Spangled Banner

Standard

This information comes from historian David Barton at http://www.wallbuilders.com

On the morning of September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the words during a battle of The War of 1812. He actually wrote four verses this poem. He wrote the poem while  detained on a British ship. Originally it was published as a poem. Later it was song to a British tune.

In the 1890s the military required the song to be played at the raising and lowering of the flag.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson ordered it to be played at all military ceremonies.

On March 3, 1931, Herbert Hoover, declared the song, The Star Spangled Banner,  to be the National Anthem for the United States of America.

Stay tuned for more facts and  information on our National Anthem.

Now for a little quiz: Technically there have been 44 terms of  presidency but only 43 presidents. According to the terms of presidency, what number was Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover.

Who was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms?

Answers will come in the next blog–stay tuned.

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

I enjoy the theater (pronounced thee- long A- te    no ‘r’ sound). I participated in drama in high school. I was the lead in The Sound of Music, was the real Adelaide Adams in Calamity Jane, and competed in drama competitions. I always longed for my own children to follow in my footsteps. When they were young, I had a chance. I could force, I mean strongly encourage, them to participate in children’s musicals at church and school. When the time came to audition for high school plays and musicals–NOTHING. Sports took center stage.

However after four children and several years of high school; my heart’s wish has been made reality. Those of you who know our family my be thinking one of two scenarios–‘which girl jumped in and made her mommy happy?’ or ‘what has Corey done now?’ WRONG on both counts. Bryce, our youngest son and senior in high school, made his stage debut last night at Branson High School in the play Harvey. Harvey is about a man, Elwood P. Dowd, who has an imaginary friend who is a six-foot white rabbit named Harvey. This play was made famous by Jimmy Stewart in 1950. My heart soared as he stepped onto the stage– twice and in the dark. You see Bryce was actually one of the stage hands dressed like medical attendants from the Psychiatric Hospital. He has been in the Stagecraft class all year designing, creating, and moving sets. During the class rehearsals he had been moving sets and knew how so the director decided to make the stagehands part of the play.  He spoke no words, but he was the star of the show to his momma whose heart is a little more full today.  Watch out CofO theater department.

“The I will Never start a Blog” Blog

Standard

The title has set up the fact that I do not like the idea of sharing my life with the world. However, some facts have been brought to my attention this  thought may be egotistical on my part. First the whole world will not read the blog.  Next I control the content. I do not have to share my innermost thoughts, issues, and secrets, of which I have none. I do plan to share my opinion or my 2 Cents Worth. You, the reader, can take it or leave it.

Now let me set up the ‘why’ behind this blog. Let’s clarify some things. I am not an expert in anything. I have been noted to be a jack of all trades, master of none. However, I have lived life and worn many hats during my lifetime. I still like to dream and follow those dreams. Recently, I went back to school to earn my Master’s. On May 12, 2012, I will graduate from Dallas Baptist University with a Master’s in Christian Education. I decided one is never to old or young to dream or achieve one’s dreams. On June 3, I will make another of my dreams come true-sing the National Anthem at a major sporting event or in this case a minor league sporting event – a Springfield Cardinal’s game.

This blog will follow the countdown and preparation until this event. After this event, you can follow the countdown as we prepare for our oldest daughter’s wedding.

Between various countdown’s to life’s events, I will be giving you my 2 Cents Worth on various topics. Stay tuned.

When I Grow Up. . .

When I was a young girl, I was a huge Kansas City Royals fan. (Insert all jokes here. I have heard them all before.) I lived south of Kansas City. We would go to the games and sit in general admission. Tickets were cheap and still are for a major league baseball game. I always wanted to sing the National Anthem at one of the games. Later in life I decided I would be okay to perform the National Anthem at any sporting event. I even decided I would settle on any sporting event, even a t-ball game.

I am excited to announce my dream is still alive. On June 3, I will be performing the National Anthem at the Springfield Cardinals game. The countdown has begun. You are never to old to stop dreaming.

Oh say can you see . . .
