the long way.

How long is too long for a blog post? This one's got a lot of pictures, so if your internet works like mine, go grab a Dr. Pepper and wait for them all to load. See you in five minutes.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but also it's sometimes a lot more boring than the long way.

A few days ago I went across town to meet a former student. On my return home, I was feeling disenchanted by the subway and decided to get out and find a different way home, perhaps by bus. I had brought my camera along that day, so I wasn't too eager to jump right on and go home. Instead I walked along for a while, and then turned off into a neighborhood that I hadn't visited before. One of my favorite things to do.

Image
First of all, what if this were my front door? How awesome would that be?

I kind of hate birds, but if you're into that kind of thing, this was like an avian superstore, right on the side of the road.

This picture doesn't tell you much, but this street was absolutely packed with sights to photograph. People selling produce, fixing outdated electronics, taking an afternoon snooze, chatting with their friends, etc. The slow pace of life was enviable.

Image
It was so quiet back here. So quiet. I felt like an intruder.

It's a pace of life that seems to be slowly disappearing. I better take the long way more often.

百泉山 and Grape Picking

Image
This is 百泉山, a mountain area about 2 hours outside of Beijing. Last Saturday, the school organized a trip for its teachers to this place as well as to a nearby vineyard to pick our own grapes. Never having picked grapes or traveled to this scenic location, I readily signed up for the free trip (Why not, right?). It turned out to be a really fun day.

I often return home from somewhere awesome and wish I had more pictures of this or that. This occasion was kind of like that, but I did a few good shots. Here's what I have:

lately

This week, I've been feeling a little bit like this guy. Life is great, but the days are full.

Image

My classes finally began this past Monday (in the midst of a giant-sized unfinished construction project), so it is nice to finally be settling into a regular and semi-predictable routine. Living and working here keeps me on my toes, that is for sure. I hope to start updating this more when both my schedule and internet become more reliable. Until then, go read about my awesome new nephew. :)

catching up: the Summer Palace

Several weeks ago, some of my former students invited me and another teacher to go with them to the Summer Palace for the day. It was awesome to hang out with them again as well as to visit one of Beijing's beautiful sites. Here are some shots from our day together.

We took a boat ride while we were there. Had to watch out for crazy drivers like this little guy.

A fun day. What awesome kids. They treated us to a hotpot lunch afterward, which is about the only way to make a perfect day more perfect. :) (Sorry, no pictures of that.)

I hope you are having a good weekend!!

Mooncakes

Today is a special holiday in China. It's called the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节).
Bet you didn't know that.

On this day, people eat a traditional food called a mooncake, because the holiday always falls on the full moon. Mooncakes are round, dense cakes filled with anything from red beans to coconut. They're a pretty big deal here. Everyone gives them to everyone else, and they are for sale literally wherever you go. Places like Dairy Queen and Häagen-Dazs even sell mooncakes made of ice cream. (not a bad idea.) Below are some mooncakes that I was given for the holiday.

After experiencing 4 of these holidays, I still enjoy taking pictures of mooncakes more than I like eating them. :)

不到长城非好汉

不到长城非好汉. This a famous Chinese saying, which pretty much means "He who has not been to the Great Wall is not a real man."

I guess a lot of you reading this have some traveling to do. :)

In the past few weeks I've actually had the chance to go to the Great Wall two times, but to a different spot each time. Most of these pictures are from a place called Mutianyu, a section of the wall that's a bit outside of Beijing. If you come, I will take you there. For real, I will.

Starting again...

My new team.
Image
We have a tradition of taking the new teachers to a place called Wangfujing. It's pretty much a tourist trap, but the main reason we go there involves them completing a a sort of rite of passage--eating a fried scorpion.

Keeping the peace. :)

Chilling.

Of course, there are some more delicious skewered items for sale.
