Berry's late goal lifts BYU-Hawaii over Santa Rosa JC, second game Seasiders roll 4-0
LAIE, Hawaii (Aug. 30, 2013) – Brady Berry’s goal in the 81st minute lifted the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders over Santa Rosa Junior College 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the first of a two-match day.
Berry knocked it in
off his head with an assist from Chad Nahoolewa. The Seasiders had
several shot attempts throughout the game off of free and corner kicks
but could never get anything to go until Berry’s soft bouncer in the
net.
“We possessed the
ball extremely well,” head coach Mark Davis said, “We needed to put more
shots on goal and we did so in the second match and that’s why we
prevailed.”
The match featured
BYU-Hawaii controlling for most of the time, but the Bearcubs pressed at
times testing the defense of the revamped 2013 crew.
The Seasiders
responded late after a scoreless first half with a hard push and
eventually got just enough with the score. The team held off Santa Rosa
to build some early season confidence.
Following the first
match, the two teams squared off again with the Seasiders winning 4-0
over the Bearcubs. Chris Toronto scored a pair of goals to lead
BYU-Hawaii.
At the end of the
first half Jake Sorenson popped one over the head of the keeper on a
terrific run to make it 2-0 after Toronto’s first.
Lorenzo Lopez took a cross from Toronto to knock one in the sidenetting for a 3-0 lead.
Midway through the
second half, Toronto picked up his second score with hard fought goal
after Lopez took it the length of the field before Toronto’s scrappy
play made it 4-0 to cap the win.
BYU-Hawaii hosts Chaminade at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
