Josper Kemeph Ure

Image I think Josper has Joseph's mouth and my eyes. What do you think? But where did that red hair come from? We don't even have mail man or a milk man! But we are proud parents of our vitual little bundle of joy!

Sorry Mama Stuart and Mama Ure - this is not an announcement.

Praia Vermelha

Finally, we went to the beach and did the beach thing: sit and catch the UV rays while wearing a swimming suit for several hours. Well, it turned out to be one and half because we were becoming little red tomatoes. And we even went for a dip in the ocean. WOW! This was tons of fun. I have gone to the ocean before in the US, but for some reason the Brazilian one is more fun. As you sit on the beach and let the waves literally crash over you, you have to be ready for the ocean to SUCK you back into it. There were several times that I was flipped over by the waves going in and out. Talk about sand in the swim suit! And it's not fine stuff either; it is like rock salt. But holy cow, it was wonderful. And now, two days later, I am still as white as when I left Utah.

Festa Julinha

ImageOur ward, along with the nieghbor ward had the annual July Festival and holy smokes, this is something that the United States could have. If we can celebrate Cinco de Mayo, why not Festive Julinha? July Festival is a party that is very popular in Brazil celebrating the country folk. Traditional costumes are worn by the children, but as you can see, we had a little share of it too. The decorations are the awesome flags and lots of music! Oh the music! I loved it. Joseph and I learned the very basics of Forho. We definately were Americans. We can't swing our hips for the life of us.
Image The traditional food for a July Festival is right here: hotdogs in a tomatoe sauce (most important part), corn on the cob, and cake. This pot of hotdogs looks small in the picture, but I am not kidding when I say it is at least two feet across! I have never seen anything like it!

I volunteered to bring two cakes - one orange and one chocolate. But instead of bringing chocolate, I brought Revel Fudge Bars instead. This was completely different than anything they would have eaten. And the Brazilians loved them! As for the orange cake, nobody told me that Brazilians eat cake without frosting. So my cake was the only one with frosting. Oh, the differences in culture! I don't think they knew quite what to do with it either. Well, at least Joseph ate it. He was probably the only one who ate it - "the others were too dry for him". Oh, bless his heart!Image

The Jovens

For the month of July, the public and private schools in Rio are on vacation. So I have taken the opportunity to hang out with the Jovens (youth) of the ward. Why? Because they are the ones who speak enough Engish that I can understand AND don't get impatient when I am trying to speak Portuguese. So it works out nice. And the best part, they are teaching me how to make the most delicious Brazilian treats! Cuz cuz, bridedeiro, cookies, etc. And I have even showed them the art of cinnomon rolls. Joseph didn't want to share that part of home very well. :)

Life of Joseph - Monday through Friday

First alarm - 6:00 am
Second alarm - 6:15 am
Third and final alarm - 6:25 am
6:30-8:30 Workout and get ready for the day. Then catch the R$2.10 bus at 8:35 am.
Image 9:00 - 5:15 pm Reports, meetings, more reports, eat a delicious sandwich made by Kemper, more reports, and more reports. Yet sometimes, there are window washers hanging outside of the desk to get excited about...Image
5:35 pm Home at last. For the rest of the evening - find job openings with awsome employers (Caterpillar, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, etc...), eat dinner, fix resumes, and end the day with half a movie (we will finish the movie the next night) while eating a sweet treat.

9:45 pm Bedtime and try to sleep on a matress that has lost its spring.

Relief Society Activity

Last week, we had an activity about different crusines of the world. Naturally being the foreigner, I was asked to make a treat from the US. Well, it was requested that I make the very difficult recipe of Rice Krispie Treats. And who would have guessed them to be such a hit! They couldn't believe how yummy they were. Who would have guessed?

The funny part of the whole thing was when I tried to teach them how to make the treats. I did the best I could, but my dear friend/portuguese teacher filled in where I couldn't. Bless her!

Dip in the Ocean

Image Oh, man. This is cold.
Image Slowly...
Image A little bit more...
Image Ha! I did it! It was only a dip and that's enough.

Kemper was on the beach taking proof pictures and guarding the personal belongings so they didn't disappear.

Check out these guns!

Image We visited the Copacabana Fort - Military Museum last Saturday and it was very facinating. And a lot of fun. Several decades ago, the Brazilan military made this fort to protect their country - I can see why - it is beautiful!

Nos gostamos de bolos muintos!

A few weeks ago, Joseph and I went to a neighbors to make his favorite Brazilian cake - carrot with chocolate frosting. He ate the entire thing too! (over the span of a week)
ImageLast Monday, I had a Bolo 101 class from our neighboors. They taught me how to make orange pudim cake. Joseph was still at work, but I was able to understand most of what they were telling me. It was so fun, especially because the language is really starting to become understandable.
Image Finally after two hours of baking, the cake is done! We spent most of the evening at the nieghbors eating cake and talking about life. It was really neat. They are innactive members who haven't been to church in 8 years. The mom was so excited to share with me her favorite scripture - Alma 37:37. It was neat because this is one of my favorites too. I even told it to them by memory in English. Well, we only have 4 weeks left but hopefully we are able to plant some seeds of faith to remind them of the truth. Image

Paparazzi finds a new target

Monday was the 99th birthday for the local Municipal Theater so everything was free that day. So we went with Mirka, Vinicius, and several other members of the ward to see it. It was really neat. I just love the orchastra, especially the tiphany (sp?) drums. And it was something very new for Joseph. He has been cultured! (Double time too because the night before, I talked him into watching Sound of Music with me too. He had never seen it - lame.)

At the end of the concert, we were meandering and seeing the beautiful theater; everything was European marble and the finest of wood carvings. As Joseph was observing one of the intricate banisters, these two Brazilians asked him to take their picture. But he wasn’t supposed to take the picture. He was to be IN the pictures. He spent the next 5 minutes with these ladies posing in pictures. The rest of us were in the background just laughing! Joseph had no idea who these ladies were and yet they treated him like he was famous! It was so comical! It made the entire night worth it.

Parabéns!

Joseph with the help of our friends from the ward threw me a surprise birthday party. It was great - Brazilian style! Brazilians really do know how to sing happy birthday here - it is a celebration and not a funeral march song. Image This is my dear friend Susi. She made this cake gluten free, as well as milk free because one of our friends can't have milk. It was a delicious chocolate strawberry cake! Yum! It was a great breakfast the next morning too.
Image And my favorite thing was for dinner: Brazilian hotdogs. Man o man, I love them.
Image I got lots of great things: Natura soaps, heavenly lotion, kitchen things, and a new pink shirt. Even Joseph got a present - a tie to match my new shirt. It's PINK! The couple who gave it to us always coordinate what they wear to church and so it was kind of an inside joke. :)

Leap of Faith

Joseph was asked to give the opening prayer in Sacrament yesterday, then the first councilor asked if I would say the closing! Ahh, I was so nervous! I practised in my mind all meeting long. And when it was time, I did it! I probably sounded like a 5 year old because I don't know how to conjugate verbs correctly or use the "gospel lingo", but hey I took that leap of faith and was so touched after that I could help but tear up.

Everyday, the same thing...

Image Joseph's Lunch:
- Ham & cheese sandwich with salad dressing, mustard, tomatoe and lettuce on cheap bread
- Beans and rice (homemade beans too!)
- Apple or banana
- Coconut cookies

We love bikes!

ImageMirka and Vinicius let us borrow their bikes so we could go on a bike ride down Flamengo beach on Joseph's day off. It was wonderful to be on a bike again, but I will tell you what... my muscles have forgotten how to ride because they were screaming at me. But I ignored them.

We rode to a WWII monument, but the security guards didn't like something about us because they wouldn't let us near it for some reason. So we kept riding along the harbor and the beach, which was still gorgeous.

This picture is taken with the aid of our faithful gorilla tripod. Our camera is in the tree while the gorilla is hanging on to one of the funny pieces of bark. I recommend this thing to everyone! I have more fun setting up my camera then I do taking the pictures.

Copacabana

Finally, we were able to get to the one of the world's most famous beaches: Copacabana. And what a beach it was! Because we are in the middle of winter here, the locals think it is too cold, but we the tourists are out enjoying the sunshine! I can't even imagine this beach when it is jam-packed full of people.

We got there late in the afternoon and the weather was perfect. We brought along our beach blanket, a kite, and a good book (Smart Couple Finish Rich). First, we sat and enjoyed people though. It was funny because as we were watching, we saw a couple who “glowed”; I leaned over to Joseph and said, “I bet they are LDS.” “No way.” “I am pretty sure.” Come to find out, we saw this same couple at church the next morning! Isn’t it amazing that we just stand out?
Image A while later, we decided to fly our kite that was given to us by some good friends. We bought the thread and we are excited! We love pipas! Joseph gave me a lesson on how to fly a kite the Brazilian way. I hope this movie clip works because I just laughed! Our pipa was in the air for about 5 minutes and CLEAR up there, and then this other kite came wandering over and cut us! Can you believe it? He intentionally cut our line! Well, it was pretty funny. Joseph went running after our kite which was no use because it was in the upper wind which took it way past the buildings. So I hope some little favela girl gets it when it finally comes down.

Later we walked along the beach path and found this awesome guy building sand-cities like I have never seen before. It was amazing at the talent and time that goes into something like that.

ImageDinner was perfect too. I just love street vendors! Corn on the cob, espichinos (amazing shish-ka-bobs), and tapiocas. YUM!

Happy 4th of July!

We had the opportunity to celebrate our nation's Independence Day with the US Consulate. It was at a local palace. Sweet! I even got to wear my "little black dress" and black shoes (dreadful after several hours). This was definitely an experience that we have never been in before, and it was very educational - especially once alcohol was able to kick in for those we were talking to.ImageThe two gentlemen, who are in this picture, work in the Commercial Services department with Joseph. The one wearing a yellow tie is Patrick and the one wearing the red tie (that cost $400!) is Gernard. Of all the people that Joseph talks about, it is these two men. Patrick is the specialist over heavy machinery, Agri-business, financing, and mineral extraction industries, while Gernard is over the technology, security, avionics, and transportation sectors. They have become some great friends and mentors for us.
Image You can't see it from this angle, but behind the palace is a hill side that is the home to one of the local favelas. At night, all the lights are on up there and it looks beautiful. I had to imagine that those were fireworks. You would think that there would have been fireworks for our party, but no. Fireworks attract too much attention from the favela and when they see that it is a grand event happening, they bring out the guns and start shooting towards the palace. Yep, I am okay with not seeing fireworks this year!
Image The American Ambassador who is in Brazil was here and gave a speech that was really nice. It made me feel that much more grateful to be an American. I have always been thankful, but now I have such a stronger love for my country after living outside of it for these last few months. We are so blessed to be American!
Image Joseph is still smiling even after eating fish eggs (I forgot the fancy name) and what ever else those fancy platters had.

It Could Have Been a Pretty Quiet Day, but.......

ImageI am not really into this whole blogging idea. Its well.......a girl thing if you know what I mean. I fully support it, because I know we do a horrible job (well I do at least) of keeping a regular journal, and even writing our friends as much as we should is hard for me to do. So this blog is the next best thing I guess. Anyways, Kemp asked that I explain this day that I had at work last week. Before I begin, this is an extension of her story about rushing to the airport (by herself) to get my passport to me. I had forgotten it and this trip would not have happened without the wonderful assistance of my courageous companion, got to love her! As a result, this day ended up being a lot more than I had expected......thank goodness.
Image
According to my schedule I was suppose to sit at my desk and do some market research, I know not the most exciting thing. After lunch I decided to make the most of a South Carolina Trade Mission and help out wherever and however possible. So I began to mingle with the managers of the companies from South Carolina. They were scheduled to have meetings all day and while talking to one of them, we soon discovered that he and Kemp are both from Ogden. He was a really nice guy and we immediately began talking about life in Utah. I asked if I could help in any way and from there on I spent most of the day with him. As a result, he invited me to take a nice helicopter ride with him the following day while he visited some perspective partners’ plants. It was awesome! The flight and picture were obviously a chance of a lifetime but more than that it gave me great insight as to how the raw, front lines of business can be. The afternoon was spent explaining, laughing, expressing concerns, recognizing cultural differences, and most importantly respecting the other. I learned more in that afternoon within a conference room sitting with very successful individuals, than I ever did in a few years of college. Image

Image The picture of the guy with the cow.......he is the multimillionaire who has started a new hobby. Raising specialty cows. After our business meetings, he was determined to drive us to this little cow utopia that he has created. For the next hour we received the full explanation as to how and why he spent over 2 million dollars on this single cow! Turns out it is a special breed from India and its eggs are used (together with a bull's sperm obviously) to create more super bred cows that he turns around and sells for $R 200,000 a piece, or about $150,000! That is no small chunk of change especially when they take the embryos and place them in the uterus of several other cows. This allows one cow to have over 100 calves per year! That is a really huge chunk of change! Anyways it was an amazing experience overall and I wouldn't trade it for anything. So Mark Haddad from Guardian Building Supplies, if you read this someday, thanks a lot

Jardim Botanico

Image

Saturday morning, Joseph and I, along with Mirka and Vinicius, went to the Jardim Botanico and had a great time. Check out this awesom cactus we found. It is spirially. In this awesome cactus garden, we also met some new friends from Germany. They looked like tourists. I am starting to spot them out. I sure hope I am blending in a little.

Image
Here is Joseph after a long day of walking through gardens. He kept saying, "okay gente..." I am not sure what it means but by his tone, I think he was ready to go home. I think I could have spent all week there. I just love being in the outdoors surrounded by nature. It was a breath of fresh air to get out of the city streets which were just on the other side of the gate.

Image

The gardens were made centuries ago by Portugal's king, when Brazil was still under their empire. And this place was his retreat. The are some of the original palm trees (behind the fountain). They have to be the 2nd tallest tree I have ever seen (first would be the California sequoias).

Image

And here is Joseph's favorite part of the day. Turtles. I think he would have them as a pet if I let him.

Feira de São Cristavão

June 28, 2008 - Saturday night we had a GRRand time. Neves and his wife Fernanda and her sisiter Bruna, took us to a north-eastern feira. There was all kinds of great things! One that I liked the best was the dancing! Neves and Fernanda tried to teach Joseph and me how to dance like a brazilian, but for some reason our hips don't move like theirs. So we were country swinging! Man o man, did we look like tourists. Image One of the shops sold hammocks. And this one was even one for a baby! how nice!
Image Now this is what I call a BBQ! This is a picture of a churrasco, a brazilian BBQ. Those are big giant slabs of meat on those giant shish-ka-bob sticks just getting ready for me to eat them. It is so amazingly delicious!
Image This is the group of us enjoying our yummy meal. It was so fun! Neves and Fernanda have been so great to take us to all the neat places in Rio. And this time is was especially fun because Bruna was with us. Bruna is blind, but that doesn't stop her from being the sweetest person on the earth. I loved helping her around when Neves and Fernanda was trying to teach Joseph how to dance. What a blessing to have met her!
Image After the feira, we spent the night at Neves house and was able to attend church with them the next morning. Every time I go to a new place, I feel so blessed to know that where ever I go in the world, there is a ward or branch. And they all have the same message. Even if the chorister is completely off key!

Mission POSSible - catching a taxi

ImageHave you ever had the feeling of GREAT accomplishment? I mean doing something that defys everything? Well, I have had my moment. I was on my way out the door to go teach English when Joseph called in a panic and said, "I need my passport right now. Get a taxi."
"Joseph, I am going teaching....(really trying to say, I am scared to death to get a taxi by myself - I could be kidnapped!)"
"Can't you reschedule your class? I really need my passport. Please, get a taxi."
Pause. I still don't speak portuguese and he just asked me to get taxi. AHHH! I have only done the bus and metro. So this was a bit extreme. So being the brave wife that I am, I asked him to tell me how to say which airport - airoporto do mesh ico do MOE. I don't think that is how it is spelled at all, but that is how to say it. And can you believe that I did it!!! Wow. Not bad.
And I even tried to have conversations with the driver. He is a gow-usho (from the south), separated from his wife, and has 4 sons, no daughters (poor guy). And I think I told him that I have lived here for 2nd (two) months - I used the wrong word. And that we wanted 14 brazilian filios (children). I am still having troubles with numbers. oopps. But I did tell him that Eu gosto de Rio de Janeiro muinto (I really like Rio de Janeiro) and several other things that came out right.
Overall, mission POSSible - catching a brazilian taxi without too much help from Joseph.

Leblon

After the Jockey Club, Joseph and I had to wait about 5 hours until the Samba place was going to start (10:00 pm). So we had some time on our hands. We walked to the beach and enjoyed watching the waves dance along the beach. We were only there for a few minutes because then it was dark and chilly so we decided to go find dinner. After searching for a good half hour, we found this place. Very fancy food and for a really good price, R$42.00 for the both of us.

Image The pink stuff by the olives is ham paste. Joseph doesn't like it, but it wasn't too bad. Also our meal came with potatoe chips as a delicacy. :) It was really tasty. And by the time we were done eating, we were too tired to go to the Samba place. So we caught a bus and went home. Later we found out the the Samba place that we were going to go to would have cost us about R$95.00 per person! Thank heavens we were tuckered out. Can you believe that?!

Joseph

Jockey Club

So this isn't quite related to a beautiful race horse, but this is what was parked out front of the Jockey Club. Joseph was in bliss for several minutes. To me, it is just a really hard-to-get-into- car so why spend so much money? Yep, men are much differnt than women....Image About a 10 minute bus ride from our home is the race track. We decided to see what the races were all about. They were really quite interesting. We were there for about 1.5 hours and only saw two races. The track was very pretty too, I almost forgot that I was living in an enormous city. (Picture taken with the aid of our trusty gorilla - thanks Brooke Ure!)
Image So this is a complete new and wonderful way to eat a hotdog. First I must say, I love hotdogs. I love Chicago Dogs more than anything, but the Brazilian hotdog is a close second. Let me explain... Bun, hotdog that has been sitting in meatless spegetti sauce, smothered in more sauce, topped with potatoe chips, can corn, peas from a box, parmesean cheese, mustard, ketchup, and mayonaise. And if you want you can have a boiled quail egg on top as well. It sounds bizarre, but I am really quite fond of them. And don't worry, I ate around the bun.
Image The best part about all the races is the parade of the horses that happens about 20 minutes before the race begins. I choose the winners who wore the brightest colors (bright pink!) and Joseph choose them by the "shifty-ness" of the horse. Who won? I still don't know.

Stake Confrence

A couple of weeks ago was Stake Confrence. I wasn't looking forward to such an event because I wouldn't be able to understand anything. So asked Joseph if we could skip the adult session. He agreed and so we made plans to go to Copacabana Beach for a nice sunny day. It was going to be great. As we were loading up our beach bag and already in our swimming suits, Joseph's old mission companion and local Rio friend, Neves, called up to ask if we wanted to go ice skating with him and his wife after confence. Oops. We were caught. So we took it as a sign and said we would love to. So we didn't go to the beach, instead we did what we were supposed to do.

Confrence, even though I couldn't understand it (Joseph is not to good at staying focused when translating), turned out to be absolutely quite nice. From what I gathered from it (the parts Joseph relayed on) it was incredible at how a message that is a common topic in the church can have such a different meaning when I am outside the "Utah Bubble" and in the world. A simple topic as the divine nature of women had so much more meaning to me as I am in Brazil. It was a very powerful conference! It was also a testimony builder as I watched Elder Scott speak portuguese and watch President Eyring's lips move but hearing a different language. The church is world-wide and is true no matter what part of the world you happen to be in. I am so blessed!

Homesick

Well, the reason for not updating this blog in a while is because I have had the case of homesickness. I am admitting it now. But now I have realized how incredibly blessed I am to be here and had a change of heart. I really do love living in Brazil. So stay tuned to further adventures, because they happen regularly!

Campinas Temple

While Joseph was in San Paulo, I took the June weekend trip to the temple with other members of my ward. Some spoke English, but it was very broken - alot like my portuguese. It was an amazing experience because I really had to trust others, even if I couldn't understand them. It is easy when Joseph is around because he speaks their language, but this time it was me. But I was in great company. The sisters helped me fill out my medical history/emergency contact card because I had no idea what the form was asking of me. And it turned out that, I even got to sit by them on the bus! Well, they were across the isle and I lucked out by having two seats to myself. Image The bus left the stake center at 11:00 pm and arrived at the Campinas temple at 6:30 am the next morning. So I "slept" on the bus, but isn't this a beautiful thing to wake up to? I couldn't resist of taking a picture! After we unloaded from the bus and stashed our bags in the lockers, we had a true brazilian breakfast: hard roll, piece of fruit, and juice or hot chocolate. Thankfully I thought to bring my own sandwich on GF bread!

Campinas is 2 hours north of San Paulo, and the plan was that Joseph would meet me at the temple at 7:30. So after stalling as much as I could, by 8:30 am, I still had not seen Joseph. The sister who was helping me had to go to another sister's sealing so she needed to go. So I went to rent my clothes, with the help of this sister. And hoped that Joseph wasn't on the side of the road somewhere. But it is really cool, because after I had gotten dressed and was walking to the waiting room, I saw the temple entrance for about 2 seconds. In that two seconds, Joseph walked in! It was perfect! He later joined me in the waiting room. It made me think of how it will be in the next life. What an amazing feeling!

Image Joseph and I were asked to be the witness couple. It was my first time so of course I was a bit nervous, and in another language! eeks. Then my headset had stopped working at the end part, so I am glad I know how the spirit speaks because I had no idea what was being said in Portuguese. What a great day!
Image This is Joseph's friend who was his driver in San Paulo for a week. He even brought Joseph to the temple! He isn't a member so he doesn't understand why we love our temples, but we hope as he waited for Joseph to be done, that he felt different while he walked around the grounds.
