THE BOARD
PREAMBLE
The growing usage of English, among university students nowadays, had led to the birth of the English Language Club in our university. The clear fact in which our university is an international university with English as its major language of communication made the founding of this club even more necessary and apt enough.
The main goal of setting up the UTP English Language Club is to grant supportive/complimentary functions for the existing UTP academia by creating an environment for mutual learning of English language among its members. Such an environment will definitely provide opportunities for learner-speakers to practice the languages with their peer, and at the same time, maintaining proficiency and eloquence.
As far as our vision goes, “To create an environment for mutual learning of English Language”, members of the club as well as the high committees aim to organize activities and events very much related to the appropriate usage of English in their daily activities as students in this university.
The English Language Club of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS had been actively involved in planning and executing a number of events and activities for the July 2008 semester. Among activities planned, just to name a few, would be the membership trip, toastmaster talk, seeking permission to have a page specially allocated for the English Language Club on the elearning system, Secretary Workshop, and many more. Activities successfully carried out for the previous semester would be the Family Dinner, proofreading and editing services by the Editorial Board, design of club logo, and so on.
Our mission will be towards creating an environment for mutual learning of the English Language.
Our vision will be providing a platform for UTPians to enhance students’ linguistics abilities, while at the same time serving the members and students and lecturers alike in UTP by cultivating the passion and love for the language itself.
The objectives of ELC are:
- To provide editing and proof reading services of student publications in UTP.
- To assist in creating English speaking environment in the university.
- To promote the mastery of English language among students.
- To assist Management and Humanities Department lecturers in organizing lingual activities such as Drama Competition, Poem Recital & Essay Writing Contest.
- To help and train the members of English Language Club on ways to organize and manage an event in future time.
- To strengthen the bonds between the members.
We sincerely hope as well that for all events and activities of the upcoming semesters, which are planned in advance to ensure organization and efficiency, will be carried out smoothly and successfully. Notwithstanding that, we also yearn for the full support of our members in carrying out the activities with enthusiasm and much teamwork spirit. While conducting those events and activities, we expect our goal is set to fulfilling our club’s objectives and vision. We trust, by this way, our club could grow better and be more accountable to its members and also to the students in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
To summarize, we would like to thank all those who had helped and contributed greatly to our club. Hopefully, in the future, more activities and events could be held by our club and that the English Language Club will be strengthen and developed to its very best.
PAST EVENTS
Management Training
This was the first event held by the English Language Club and was open to all students of the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) but the priority was given to the committee members of the Regional Conference of Humanities (RCH), Book Fair and also our members of the English Language Club (ELC).
We had invited four great speakers to share with us some of their experiences in management. They were:
- Mr Billy Seah (student) on ways to handle crises in management
- Mr. Phoon Yong Ken (student) in Photoshop training
- Mr Yew Guo Zheng (student) in the Influence of the body languages
- Mr. Rahmat (lecturer) in the Ghost in Management
Seeing how the event itself was a great success with such good responses we had received from the participants, we are thinking of holding another similar event in the near future.
Bookfair January 2009
The second event held by the English Language Club during the week of the Minggu Mesra Kampus (MMK). Held at Room 9, Pocket D, is a new event of UTP in collaboration with the Popular bookstore. We received great responses from the students and staffs of UTP, and thus, we will be organizing Book Fair again for the July 2009 semester in August, from the 25th to the 27th.

Regional Conference On the Humanities 2009 (RCH)
In conjunction with the Regional Conference on the Humanities 2009 (RCH), a student assisting team had been set up and was actually made up of the members of the English Language Club. As discussed with Dr Azrai, the Department Head of Management and Humanities, the English Language Club had provided the man power in helping the organizing committee to carry out the preparations tasks and activities for the Regional Conference on the Humanities 2009. Since the club have one of the objectives which is to assist Management and Humanities Department, the English Language Club would like to form a small students committee in helping in the RCH. The team is named: Student Assisting Team- RCH (SAT) 2009. For more information on RCH, do click here

Speaker’s Corner
As recommended by our advisor, Dr. Zul, the Speaker’s Corner is a platform as well for UTPians to voice out their concerns in a much dignified and intellectual manner. For some of you who are not aware what a Speaker’s corner is supposed to be: it is actually an area allocated whereby public speaking is allowed. The original and most noted Speaker’s Corner was in the Hyde Park in London, England where the speakers were allowed to speak as long as they wanted, provided that the content was lawful and not offensive. We had the Speaker’s Corner every Wednesday night during the month of April in Village 5. Since SC is really new in UTP, we are hoping to attract more crowds during SC’s sessions this semester.
English Carnival
The English Carnival is an event to promote the learning of the English language and the English Language Club itself through multiple activities. This one week event will consist of five small events; each have different goals and are of different types. We had:
1. Toastmaster Talk
2. Tribal Village
3. Strongest Link
4. Film Festival
5. Max-x Chocolate

For the members of the English Language Club, we had Family Day on the 18th October 2008 by the Events and Activities unit. Almost all members of the club attended the enjoyable dinner filled with games and fun.

We held a few gatherings for members with simple games and activities like Tongue Twisters, Chain-Story, Treasure Hunt around Block J, Spelling Bee, and many more with the hope to retain the loyalty and interest from the existing Club members.

Overall, we received good feedback from the members who wished to have more of these language games and beneficial activities in the future.

Under the collaboration with the MPPUTP/SRCUTP (Student Representative Council UTP), some twenty ELC members participated in the Tekad 09 which was held from the 28th to the 29th February 2009. ELC provided two modules for the program which was participated by school children (SK Seri Iskandar) of a total of 160 students.
