Tomei/Cusco GDB Impreza
Team Tarzan’s Tomei Cusco Impreza was one of the highest anticipated cars for Super Street’s 2008 Super Lap Battle. The renowned pair of engine and suspension component companies teamed up to build a car capable of upsetting the lap record Nobuteru Taniguchi set in 2007 with the HKS Hypermax Evo.

My Personal Build
Alright well I am going to post my own personal build on here finally… Its been a slow process and its certainly not finished yet by any means (are they ever finished?) Just to give a little bit of background on the car, the shell is a Canadian spec 1998 2.5RS Impreza completely stripped, caged, and sprayed white. Everything else is basically transplanted from a Japanese spec version 7 WRX STI. This included the complete engine, transmission, front crossmember, driveshaft, rear differential, axles, hubs, and brakes. I had the wiring harness merged by Andre at JDMSpec back east in Montreal. With exception of the cage fabrication and wiring, everything has been done by myself and friends inside my garage here at home. Anyways heres some pictures of how it sits currently.

Subaru’s Impreza has been kicking up dirt on the world rally circuit well before the WRX was brought to American soil. Few Americans realize how capable the older Impreza models really were or at least could become after some modifications. Like many cars, they were noticeably lighter in weight back then, and offered a driving feel that many say are simply lacking in today’s cars.
This ’96 Impreza is possibly the most awe-inspiring example in the country. Originally purchased in 2003 by Michael Warfield of GST Motorsports, it was intended to be nothing more than his simple daily driver. It wasn’t until years later, in 2006, that it began the transformation into this time attack monster. It all began when GST and partners GOTO:Racing and Calculated Risk were scratching their heads trying to figure out what car to enter in the NASA 25-Hour Endurance race that year. Brian Lock of GOTO:Racing suggested that Michael build up his old Impreza. With everyone in agreement, Michael called on engine-tuning legend Cosworth for some motor help. The car was stripped and the frantic wrenching began.
Currently the GST Motorsports Impreza L is currently atop the standings for the Unlimited AWD class and the only Subaru to ever break the 1:50 second barrier at Buttonwillow. This car puts out 525whp and 450ft/lbs of torque to the wheels.

Many people in the business reckon this Subaru is the best the UK has to offer-and with good reason. The facts and figures speak for themselves. This car won the ’07 TOTB-the UK’s prestigious handling, top speed and dragstrip competition- the Scooby Shootout Handling competition and finished second overall at the ’07 Time Attack. It produces 605 bhp at the wheels or 722 when the gas is switched on; so figure on about 800 at the flywheel. To build, the car cost 150,000 and has reached 194 mph and a recorded 9.59-second quarter-mile. Despite that multitasking competitive pedigree, it’s still road legal and immaculate enough to be entered in concours.
“It’s absolutely brutal when the power kicks in between 4,500 and 5,000 rpm,” he says. “And then it keeps pulling all the way round to 8,500.”
