Valentine’s Day

The whole reason I started playing Warhammer was to keep in touch with my friends and my fiancé after I transferred to a different university. Well, my friends quit around December 2008, and Jett lasted until about April 2009.

Over the the past 10 months or so I have repeatedly tried to get Jett to return to play with me, to bash skulls like the good old days. No luck.

Since we weren’t able to be with each other for Valentine’s Day, he decided to surprise me by downloading the unlimited free trial for the weekend.

While I couldn’t be with him physically, and despite knowing that he’s not coming back to WAR, it still meant a lot to me that we were able to actually spend time together and interact in a way that phone calls just can’t pull off.

Thanks Mythic for helping to make my Valentine’s Day better.

Chickens of the Damned

Chicken

I think I’ve made my undying love for Warhammer chickens quite clear. So last night when some alliance members and I went tome unlock hunting, I was more than a little excited at the prospect of flapping around lower tier RvR lakes.

One of the battlefield objectives we went to, in Ostland I believe, had a miniature cemetery. We seized the opportunity to become Chickens of the Damned, the fearsome bawk-bawking you hear in the dark of night.

Graveyard Chickens

A chicken for each tombstone

Our fun didn’t end there though. We journeyed to High Pass, where we lurked about the corpse of a dead NPC.

Chicken Death

Chickens, harbingers of doom.

Yes, we are the grotesque chickens that haunt your dreams and your farm.

Chicken Plotters

Fear the soft clucking, for it means we are plotting your demise.

Why Can’t I Be Da Biggest?

I missed out on the stability test on the PTS last night, but I was able to log into the Mythic vent to catch the tail end of the Q & A. An alliance mate asked me to put a question in my comment, but Andy and Nate had already passed by the C’s.

However, I luckily had a guildie (whose name began with T) who was in-game and in vent, and was willing to put our question in his comment.

We wanted to know if there were any plans to create bigger Black Orc models.

Andy said that he was in favor of the change and had brought it to the higher-ups, but they turned it down. He noted that they had a few reasons that he couldn’t remember offhand, but confirmed there are no current plans to implement bigger Black Orcs.

So, for now there will be no green, mean, 8-foot tall fungi tanks. What a shame.

1.3.4 Weapons

UPDATE: Gaarawarr has screenshots up of what the weapons look like when equipped. Some of them are pretty intense.

My alliance mates were all chit-chatting in Vent about the new royal weapons and shooting requests at the lone player logged in the PTS. So, for them and whoever else is interested, here are links to the new weapons for Destruction.

Adventures in Deutschland!

Image

I downloaded the European version of WAR last week (I had to leave my computer on over night to finish the patching!)

The first server I checked out was Drakenwald, one of the two German servers for the game. I rolled a teeny tiny Witch Elf and was confused to see English on the loading screens and tutorial.

But then, the English vanished. In its place was German! German everywhere!

It was almost as if I was on another continent…hmm…

Image

I have no idea what any of this says!

Image

I fled to the familiarity of English-speaking Karak Azgal soon afterwards, where I saw someone say “Cheers!” instead of “Thank you!” in region chat.

Europeans are awesome.

It’s a Small World

When I started working at Warhammer Alliance, I expected that I would be scouring the intertubes for information from a variety of sources.

I did not expect that I would have Google Translate open in another browser window half the time.

While normally the WAR Europe site has the same news across all four of its heralds, occasionally one will have a unique tidbit in a language that I can’t read, such as when the postal system on Carroburg was down a day or two before Christmas. Or, like today, one WAR Europe twitter account reported (in French and Spanish) that character transfers had resumed, but the English version had not updated with the news.

I am actually really enjoying this. I haven’t read Spanish in a year, but it’s fun to figure out exactly what is being said before turning to the translator (which tends to mangle the meaning in its own special way).

So, I am especially excited that I now have access to the European servers thanks to a very helpful Tully Ackland. This means that my fellow waaaghers across the pond cannot escape from my hunt for guilds to interview.

If you play on a European server, let me so I can look you up! I’m planning on making a toon somewhere tonight, and I have a feeling this will be a very interesting experience.

Friendship

I read an interesting article in The New York Times yesterday, titled “The Children of Cyberspace: Old Fogies by Their 20s.”

It basically discusses that the generation gap being created by rapid advancements in technology is not just limited to youth and their parents, but also applies between young children, high schoolers and college students.

There’s a lot I could say on the topic, but two grafs in particular stuck out to me as relevant to Warhammer Online and MMOs in general.

The boom of kid-focused virtual worlds and online games like Club Penguin and Moshi Monsters especially intrigues Mizuko Ito, a cultural anthropologist and associate researcher at the University of California Humanities Research Institute.

Dr. Ito said that children who play these games would see less of a distinction between their online friends and real friends; virtually socializing might be just as fulfilling as a Friday night party. And they would be more likely to participate actively in their own entertainment, clicking at the keyboard instead of leaning back on the couch.

I agree with Dr. Ito. Her statements are just as applicable to me, a 20-year-old college student, as they are to kids toddling around as sunglass-sporting penguins (yes, I made a Club Penguin account as part of a project I did on children’s social networks. Do not judge).

Lately, I find myself logging in to WAR more and more with the primary goal of socializing versus flipping zones or running dungeons. If I’m logged in, that also means I’m chatting away in vent with my guildies and alliance mates.

I do find spending time with them on a Friday night just as enjoyable as if I went out to dinner with some friends, if not more so. Sometimes, when I’m working on a project and can’t play, I just log into Vent to catch up and talk.

I’m genuinely interested in how they are doing. For example, one of my alliance mates just received an award in the Navy, and I could not be more happy for him.

The line separating my “real life” friends from my WAR friends has completely vanished. This doesn’t mean I have no life. It just means that my online friends are part of my life.

An excellent illustration of this is my friend Aravista from WAR (I do know her actual name, but I choose to use her avatar’s). Almost a year ago we met on Vortex, probably in Tier 1, running into each other in the lakes. We really got to know each other in Tier 2 when our little Witch Elves were  grouped together and told to guard keep posterns together.

This ended up happening to us in every warband we were in together, so we became fast friends. Despite the fact that we weren’t in the same guild, we ran together often and continued to do so into Tier 3. Even if we weren’t together, we would still shoot each other tells to see how the other was doing and what she was up to.

But then Vortex died.

We lost touch. I went to Iron Rock for a month until the mergers occurred and transfers opened to Volkmar.

Over the months that passed, I honestly felt like I had lost a much-loved friend. I wondered if she was still playing and if her life was going ok, but I had no other way to contact her. When I transferred and saw someone already had my name, I was sure to only change one letter on the off chance I could find lost friends like Ara.

Then one day I was in The Inevitable City and saw a Disciple of Khaine named Aravistatoo. I thought the possibility of someone having such a similar name would be just too weird, for I had kept Aravista on my friends list just in case. I took a chance, sent a tell and it turned out it was her after all.

After much rejoicing and multiple tells in all caps, we swapped e-mails and began a renewed communication both in-game and out. Then, without either of our knowledge, her guild ended up joining my guild’s alliance.

So now we talk all the time like “real life” friends. Sometimes I talk to her more than my friends irl. When she and her boyfriend broke up, we talked things out like ordinary girlfriends do. I always tell her about any new developments with my upcoming wedding,

and she gives suggestions. We share pictures ofshoes and discuss the latest news of our lives. We even have our own channel in the alliance vent – Happy Hello Kitteh time.

Ara and I

What I’m trying to show with this story is that WAR has actually enriched my social life, even though it takes place in front of a computer screen. Just because the interactions happen through “a series of tubes,” it doesn’t mean the relationships that result are any less real or meaningful.

I have never met Ara in person, and I don’t know if I ever will.

Nevertheless, she’s one of my closest friends.

Guild Interviews

Image

The interview I did with the guild leader of DROW is up over on Warhammer Alliance. I’ve only done two so far, but I’ve balanced it with one Order guild and one Destruction guild.

I like interviewing people who play WAR. I did it for a Web design project a year ago, where I asked the same three questions to someone of each career in the game, and now I’m lurking about again.

After being trained as a journalist (I’ll have that shiny degree in a year!) it’s a lot of fun to put what I’ve learned to work with something I love.

HOWEVER!

I only play on one server, so I’m relying on my own forum trolling and other people to bring interesting guilds to my attention. Especially any on European servers since I have no access to those.

Hint hint.

So, if you’re in an awesome guild and want it to get some well-deserved love and attention, drop me a line and I’ll see about setting up an interview. You can contact me in the comments, by e-mail or even by my Twitter account over there on the right.

Still Alive

I apologize for appearing to fall off the face of the earth. Things have been hectic with the holiday season, and I’ve been spending potential post-writing time actually playing Warhammer.

This has been a very good winter break for me and WAR. Not only can I now say that I’ve experienced a successful World Boss kill, but I also hit renown rank 45 yesterday! I’m also very proud of my sister’s boyfriend, who hit 40 recently. I can’t wait to start running him through dungeons.

I’m working on a few things for Warhammer Alliance, but I do have some blog posts that I’m mulling over. Things are slowly coming together, and I hope you like what I come up with.

Oh, Shiny!

I was finally able to play some WAR Sunday night. I totally forgot about the Oh, Shiny setting until one of my alliance members mentioned it.

It is quite shiny, really.

Sometimes though, it can be a bit too shiny. Especially in Elf lands, where apparently everything glows, when you get a large group of people together.

We all started looking like a bunch of “vampires” from Twilight. I wish I had thought to take screenshots.

Overall, I like the new setting and it didn’t slow my computer down. It’s a nice touch and adds a good amount of depth to the art.

To be honest though, one of the alliance girls and I just like taking any opportunity to legitimately talk about sparkly, shiny things without causing awkward silences in Vent.
