The Warcraft universe is a high-fantasy franchise developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the richly detailed world of Azeroth and beyond, the main storyline revolves around the conflicts between diverse races such as humans, orcs, elves, and the undead. The original game, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, released in 1994, pioneered the real-time strategy (RTS) genre. It was followed by sequels and expansions, including Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

In 2004, the franchise expanded with World of Warcraft (WoW), an immensely popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that continues to receive new expansions, the latest being The War Within. The Warcraft universe also encompasses novels, comics, a feature film, and various licensed merchandise, further immersing fans into its epic tales of heroism, magic, and conflict.

Greatfather Winter blanketing the land in snow, as depicted in I Got What Yule Need.

Greatfather Winter is the central figure of the Feast of Winter Veil, a holiday observed during Azeroth's winter season. He is a supernatural being who is believed in many cultures (particularly those of the dwarves and tauren) to walk across the world with winter itself as his cloak, covering the land in snow and thereby giving it time for rebirth and renewal. He is said to provide a bounty to those who welcome his presence, which gave rise to a tradition of communities coming together and feasting in anticipation of the land's renewal.

In recent years, the goblins of Smokywood Pastures have popularized a more commercial depiction of Greatfather Winter as a jolly, bearded old man in a red suit who appears during the Feast of Winter Veil to hand out gifts (in the form of Smokywood Pastures products) to people that have behaved well during the year. This version of the Greatfather is said to ride a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer, be accompanied by troops of snowmen, and own magical workshops staffed by festive gnomes and goblins called Little Helpers. Actors portraying "Greatfather Winter" or "Great-father Winter" appear in Ironforge and Orgrimmar, respectively, during the holiday to advertise Smokywood Pastures' products, though traditionally-minded critics argue that these depictions have little in common with the real Greatfather Winter.

Warcraft Wiki wishes all of our readers and contributors a happy Feast of Winter Veil!
