Father's Day 2020

Image

*Spencer rocking a Coronavirus Coif, and Gigi has turned feral since we don't actually GO to church anymore, so she hasn't had her hair brushed in... a... while.

I haven't touched this poor sad blog in approximately two years. Much like Video Killed the Radio Star, Instagram Killed the Weeds Seeds Blog.

BUT. This morning, I was thinking about Father's Days past, and so I got onto the blog and started reviewing. It was good.  It was a look into sweet times past. In particular, this post caught me, from Father's Day 2012. Nathan was 8, Cody was 5, and Leah was 3. It made me smile, and then made me get up off my lazy 2020 bum to do the same for Spencer and Gigi, ages 7 and 4. So that 10 years from now, we can look back and have those same warm fuzzies, here we go!

Dad always says...

Grace: I'll only play one round with you.

Spencer:  How do you argue with your mother?

What makes Dad happy?

Grace: When I snuggle with him.

Spencer: Knowing that he got a motorcycle.

What makes Dad sad?

Grace: When I don't let him call me Georgie.

Spencer: Us arguing.

What does Dad do that's funny?

Grace: When he makes a mad face at me, it really actually makes me laugh.

Spencer: When he goes, "oh, yeah, yeah, yeah," then he puts his thumb down and goes, "pppphhhhhttttttthhhhhhpppppttt!"

What did Dad like to do as a little boy?

Grace: Play Mean Bird.

Spencer: Watch Star Wars 4.

What does Dad love to do?

Grace: Watch Price is Right.

Spencer: Play on his phone.

If Dad were famous, what would he be famous for?

Grace: For being a DJ, you know, *makes DJ scratching motions*

Spencer: Chiropractic stuff.

What does Dad do when you're not around?

Grace: Still plays Mean Bird.

Spencer: Probably goes to work. As long as it's not Coronavirus.

Where is Dad's favorite place to go?

Grace: Probably Pojo's.

Spencer: I assume Pizza Pie Cafe.

What is Dad really good at?

Grace: He's good at making me laugh.

Spencer: Adjusting people.

What is Dad not good at?

Grace: Making me smile. (So he's good at making you laugh, but not at making you smile. Contradictory much???)

Spencer: Playing guitar.

What does Dad do at work?

Grace: Adjusts people.

Spencer: He adjusts people and makes money.

What is Dad's favorite food?

Grace: Brussels sprouts.

Spencer: Strawberry Jello Cheesecake

What does Dad do that makes you happy?

Grace: He lets me have screen time at his office on the computer.

Spencer: Reads to me.

What do you and Dad do together?

Grace: Watch Jesus videos.

Spencer: Read

How are you and Dad the same?

Grace: We both watch Price is Right.

Spencer: He, me, and Nathan are triplets, except they are older than me.

How are you and Dad different?

Grace: Because I don't have a laptop.

Spencer: Because I've got more hair than him probably.

What does Dad like about Mom?

Grace: Isn't it obvious? He likes going out on dates with you.

Spencer: That she's nice and pretty and that stuff.

How do you know that Dad loves you?

Grace: Because he always sings me songs at nighttime.

Spencer: Because he reads to me.

Ryan's been kicking this fatherhood thing in the head for 16 years now, with no signs of stopping. Let's be honest, the man was built for fatherhood in a way that not all men are. It's dang hard work, and it's exhausting, but it's also his happy place. Working hard (in all ways-both inside and outside of our home) to give our kids a happy life and a good foundation-that's his highest priority, and his highest self. And we love him for it. Happy Father's Day, old man!

Cweed's trip

Hey guys! Well, it was my turn to go on an eastern church history tour. It was a blast! My Grandma, Grandpa, and my two cousins, Josh and Lauren, went from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania through New York all the way to Cleveland, Ohio.
I left on the 10th of July to fly to Spokane, Washington(Yes I flew by myself in case you were wondering. I thought I was a very big deal.) The next day we took a three hour plane ride to Minneapolis where our connection was delayed two hours. We then took another plane ride to Philadelphia, which stunk because we got to our hotel at like 12:00 their time and we had to wake up early the next day to get going.

Image
(Yes my glasses are off because I had to go and break them right before the trip. Nothing a little duct tape couldn't fix the next day. We also had to take an emergency haircut right before my plane ride because we had forgotten the day before, so it was a little hectic.)
So after groggily getting up at 8:30 the next day we went and toured the Hershey story where we made our own chocolate and tasted exotic chocolates from around the world.

Then we drove to Harmony, Pennsylvania where we went to the Susquehanna River where Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowderey were baptized. I thought this was really cool because I thought about the time when I was baptized and all the times I go to the temple to do baptisms for other people.
      Image
We also went to the Priesthood Restoration site.

Image

I really liked going to this place because it shapes who I am as a member of the church because I am a priesthood holder. It helped strengthen my testimony because I could especially feel the Holy Ghost in abundance here. I could feel the Priesthood part of me feel very familiar with this place.
The last place we went on this day was the Peter Whitmer farm in Fayette, where I gave a presentation. I regrettably forgot my camera when we went here. I liked the Peter Whitmer farm very much because this was the place where the church was founded in the latter days. My testimony was strengthened here because this is the place where it all began. The most important thing in my life began here.
This is also where I saw a lightning bug for the first time, so, you know. That makes me an official man. I've seen a lightning bug and I've flow by myself. What else do you need to do in your life? That was the end of that day, so we drove to our hotel.
The next day, we toured the Hale and Smith homes where we held a box that would've looked like the box that held the plates when Joseph was alive. When I held this box (which by the way weighed the same as the real plates, around fifty pounds #hugemusclesforlife 💪) realization struck me. Joseph Smith ran a mile carrying this heavy box while being attacked. That kind of effort he put into doing something because he believed in inspires me to keep faith and do things the lord asks me to because in comparison it usually isn't as hard.

    Image

We also went to the Palmyra temple to do baptisms. I thought this was a really beautiful, and, as a plus, you could see the Sacred Grove standing on the side of the building. As always being in the temple was a holy and spiritual experience.
Image
Image

We toured the Joseph Smith Sr. farm, home and cabin. I really loved hearing all of the stories about how Joseph hid the plates and I know Heavenly Father helped protect them which also strengthened my testimony.
Image

Image

After that we went to the sacred grove which was my favorite thing we did on the trip was go to the sacred grove. This was the most spiritual place for me because Heavenly Father appeared here. My testimony was greatly strengthened by being able to stand in the vicinity of where God the Father stood. There was this patch of ground that felt different from the rest of the ground. Nothing grew there so I have my suspicions...
Image

Image
After the sacred grove we went to the Hill Cumorah where Joseph found the plates. I liked this place because I could imagine Moroni hiding the plates there and Joseph finding them. This place strengthened my testimony because I thought of all the times that I read the BOM with my family. There wouldn't be any of these times without this place.
Image

Image

Image

After seeing the Hill Cumorah we saw the pageant which I liked. It was basically a play from Nephi's time to the latter days. And that was the end of that day.
The following day we went to church and spent another hour in the Sacred Grove. After many mosquito bites, we went to the Grandin Building, which is where the BOM was printed. I thought it was fascinating how they made books back then.
Image

After that we saw the Erie Canal and drove to our hotel by Niagara Falls. That night we went and saw the falls light up and there were fireworks.
Image
Image

On the next day we went to Niagara Falls. It was amazing how much water there was around me. We went on a boat called The Maid of the Mist. We boated across the part where the water from the falls came together at the bottom. I got completely soaked. We also heard this story about a boy who went over the falls, protected only by a life jacket and lived. We also went into Canada which Nathan wishes he could do (ha Nathan take the L) to see their side of the falls.
Image
Image

Image

Then we drove to Kirkland, and stayed the night.
The next day we went to the Isaac Morley farm. We also went to the historic Kirkland village with the Whitney home and store. I really liked the Whitney store because of the story where Joseph comes and says "Newel K Whitney thou art the man" and proceeds to tell him that he prayed him here, and asked him what he can do for him.
Image

We also toured the Kirkland temple. I liked it because it was the first temple built and you could almost see Joseph and his appointed officers sitting there.
Image
We finished off with the John Johnson home where many revelations were given.
We finished off our trip with Cedar Point, the amusement park, which happens to be the roller coaster capital of the world. The next day we flew home.
I would like to close with my testimony. I know all the things I was told and saw on this trip was real. I know Joseph Smith was a real prophet, and I know that Heavenly Father appeared unto them in the Sacred Grove. I know that they lived and am grateful for Joseph Smith's witnesses and for their testimonies that help strengthen other people's. I am also thankful I was able to go on this trip. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Until next time. I know you'll all miss me.

Said 18.0

Said Spencer with arms raised to the sky when he got a turn to be pushed in the stroller, "YES!  I am the people's KING!"

Pretty darn accurate, my man, pretty darn accurate.

Said Nathan as Sunday drew to a close, "The problem is that there aren't enough weekends in the week!"

Sing it!  The plight of the working man!

Said Spencer in a very strained voice as he sat on the potty, "I just need to believe in myself!"

So funny!!!  So cute!  And soooooooo funny!  We will never stop laughing about that one!

Said Nathan, as he worked his wild dance moves all over the kitchen, "I need some Maui breasts.  He's got some great breasts."

As in Maui from Moana???  Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha!  String Bean Nate wants big burly "Maui Breasts."

Said Nathan, while recapping what it was like to be the mom for a week, "Well, the weekdays weren't so bad.  But I wouldn't go through those Sundays again for $100."

Said EVERY mom whose husband is in the bishopric EVERY Sunday.

Said Spencer as he reached into the silverware drawer, to find only extra large spoons, "Well.  I guess it's time for me to grow up and be a MAN."

That Time I Went to England: Bath (Pronounced Baaaaaaah-th)

Image

In Bath, we stayed with this hilarious English lady who was incredibly insistent that Jayna looks like Megan Markle. (Absolutely true, by the way.)  So I encouraged her to take a picture with Miss Jayna, so she could show all of her friends about the American celebrity princess who stayed with her and I'm still laughing about it inside. Also, her house was on a terrifying street for parking and driving, and her college age rugby player son walked straight into our room at night, so... that was a memorable place.

Bath!  (Which you must pronounce Baaaaaah-th. And you can just say "Baaaaaaahth, or you can also say, "I do so love Baaaaaath.)  Bath got shorted.  We only had the morning to explore, which means we really only explored THE Baths, which were super cool, but I wish we'd had more time to explore the city because it was lovely!

 Wild green waters.

It was so cool learning about the Romans, and how they used this place.  They had massage rooms, steam rooms, rooms for sleeping, and then when you woke up, they had people to interpret your dreams.  You could messages to the gods into the pool, like, "Someone stole my cow, make sure they can't sleep until they return it." Or, "Someone stole my gloves, cause them to go insane unless they give them back." So here's Jayna tossing in some "justice prayers" of her own.

Image

As we were pretty literally running out of town, we passed by the Jane Austin Museum and snapped a picture with Sir Walter Elliot?  I don't know, maybe he's supposed to be some other dashing hero man from Austin Land.

Then we raced back up to catch our train in Birmingham (and if you've ever tried to wend your way through the English countryside, you know that it is not actually possible to "race" anywhere), and that you may, in fact, wander one-lane country roads due to unexplained road closures, and then, even after herculean effort at navigating Birmingham and RUNNING up train terminal steps lugging super huge and heavy luggage behind you, still miss your train.  *Le Sigh.*

That Time I Went to England: Blenheim Palace

Image

Blenheim Palace, accidental birthplace of Winston Churchill.

Image

To the surprise of none, the inside is ridiculously gorgeous.

Image

One of my favorite things is the paintings... I think all I want out of life is to be immortalized in painting form in the most favorable way possible in one of these grand houses/castles/palaces, call them what you will.  Is that too much to ask?

A few paintings in particular caught my eye...

Image

Ok, so check this family portrait.  First, apparently the 9th Duke of Marlborough was way shorter than his wife, so the painter posed them with him on a lower step and her on a higher so it would actually be correct, but appear that there's a simple reason why she "looks" taller.  Second, see how the sunlight falls on their heir?  The golden boy, the heir apparent, first born son, all the angels sing.  Then, there's the other one.  The other brother.  The SPARE HEIR if you will.  Look at him!

A close up is required.

Image

I mean, look at him!  They couldn't even be bothered to brush his hair for the portrait!  Hilarious!

Image

But my favorite and most hilarious painting is this one of these two gals playing cards.  The important one is Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, the one who is NOT looking at the painter.  She was an avid game player and I love that two things, one, she couldn't be bothered to stop playing to look at the painter, and two, I'm sure she was using this portrait session to cheat, like, "Oh, have her show you her cards-and then tell me what they are!" I love this woman.  This woman is me in Duchess form.

Image

An extremely flattering sculpture of Queen Ann.  Apparently she was as wide as she was tall, so the sculptor was very... liberal with his portrayal of her.

The outside-similarly gorgeous and amazing.

Image

Where, you know, swans casually float in the ponds...

Image

And perfect, picturesque English countryside beauty is around every fragrant corner!

That Time I Went to England: The Cotswolds

We meandered down through tiny villages in the Cotswolds as only moms can-stopping to take pictures of poppies, admiring all the charming little shops and buildings and stopping at more than one tea shop because #bakedgoodsarelife.

Image

You see?? Poppies.  Fields and fields of poppies.  This is real!  Not edited!  Real fields exist out in this world that are ABLAZE with poppies under a gorgeous blue sky like it's no big deal.

Image

It turns out that the Brits are very fond of their flag.

Image

Can you see it?  Can you feel it??  So adorable and English.

Image

Plus the English name everything.  Every lane, every farm, every shop has an adorable name.  Pebblebrook Farm.  Hollyhock House.  Sweet Briar Lane.  Or, they're super quirks. Case in point? The Snooty Fox, the darling establishment featured above.

Image

Maybe Jayna's real calling in life is hat modeling?

Image

It's all so beautiful and bucolic!  Roses!  Stone work!  Ducks! Weeping willows!  Sheepies!  AND BUNTINGS.  England is the blessed land of buntings. As far as I could tell, there was no party or event or occasion on that small stretch of lane, but someone decided to stretch that little bunting between two gate posts just because.  It's just the way someone goes to get home every day and they thought it would be more cheerful with buntings.  It is!

That night, we stayed in an old English manor house, which was stunning and maybe haunted? (Jayna says yes.)

Image

Image

You know, just a little out-building on the manor house property, which is a darling gingerbread house come to life!

Image

This is England, where everything is adorable (even things that are not trying to be!) Perfect place for two moms escaping regular life!
