YUP! God even supplies new bed sheets!

F

or the last couple of weeks  I was getting rather irritated while trying to sleep or waking up in the middle of the night because our bottom sheet had torn near the bottom – just where our feet are. You get the picture – get foot stuck in it, wake up and tear it more.  Yes, we use our sheets till they literally wear thin! These sheets are just over seven years old – having gotten them just before our youngest was born.  I could not sew it because much of the fabric around it was too thin.sheets

I did some extra babysitting last week, so I was on a mission to get a new set of sheets.  Being it’s been awhile since I bought a set of king sized bed sheets, I was in for some sticker shock, as well as my husband, hearing him, whistle at the prices.  YIKES!  Even with the extra babysitting money spending $50 to $75 on a set of sheets was too big of a lump when other bills were important. There was no way.

Hat DayI was rather bummed not finding what we needed, but it helped having the distraction of our grandbaby being here with us.  We found some fun, floppy summer hats for her to try on, taking pictures to show her mama.  receiptWe got to the checkout lane to meet up with our daughter and show her the pictures, and as I went on my phone, our local grocery store logo showed on my phone and it reminded me to check to see if I had any rewards.  I was blown away!  Because of what we had spent the previous month, I had a $30 reward – off of ANYTHING!  I almost ran back to the sheet aisle to find the right sheet set!  I didn’t even get the cheapest set of sheets!

I got those sheets home, washed and dried them and put them on our bed and ohhhh, what luxury it felt like!

Yes, my God even meets the needs of a nice new set of sheets!

Five Minute Friday ~ Written

I

may never have my name upon a book cover,  but something I enjoy doing is being is being a writer.  Way back when, I was the kid in school getting in trouble for passing notes. I was the writer of long letters then – I still am! I enjoyed the writing assignments for English and reading classes. Yes, even during college days,  I enjoyed helping friends write their papers for class… and then helping my college aged kids.Image

Another great past time of mine is reading the words and works of other writers, including reading the hostess of Five Minute Friday’s book, Surprised by Motherhood: Everything I Never Expected about Being a Mom.  I am in the middle of reading her book now, which just came out and will be giving a book review of it soon. You need not wait for my review – order it now!  It’s worth it!  Lisa-Jo is indeed a wonderful writer!

Besides writing here on my blog, I am also the writer of numerous journals.IMAG1269-1 And part of many of my journals is taking the writings of the Great Author, God, and writing down what has touched my heart at that time – sometimes rewritten as a prayer to Him, sometimes, just writing down and dating it and remembering how it touched my heart at that time.  To take the Words of God that He has written, and rewrite them to have them written on my heart helps me hold it closer and to look back and see the verses that were given to me at the right time along this journey of life.  

God’s Word is such a gift to us, so timely, and we can also give our words not only to Him through our prayers (in thought, aloud, or in writing) but we can give the gift of words to others – simply a note, or even journals that we keep and pass down.  I am so thankful I encouraged (sometimes forced) our children to keep journals as part of their schooling.  What treasures they are to have their written words to remember special times . . . to laugh over, cry over and be thankful for. Yesterday one of my married daughters was over, and we laughed at one of her journal pages, and then got out our son, Matthew’s journal, to reminisce over.  It’s a gift he left behind to us.

There is a writer in all of us – it needs to be share!

God is not fooling!

or the most part, I do not like April Fool’s Day mainly, because I do not like to be fooled.  As the mom of five boys, through the years, there has been a lot of teasing. But as I write this, one of my boys thinks I am hauling his weight machine out of the house to the end of the drive for the garbage man to take.  He’s been out of the house for over three years and he knows I am anxious for him to get it.  One of my girls called to inform him of what I was {supposedly} doing. He believed her and was probably wondering what in the world I am doing and acted a little exasperated.  Oh well, I guess it’s my turn to get them back just a bit!  I did send him a text – GOTCHA!  🙂

Aren’t you thankful God does not play jokes on us and say “GOTCHA” or “just teasing”, when we arrive “somewhere” after our last breath. He says, with our faith in Him, our names are written in the Book of Life.  We will not arrive somewhere in space to find ourselves just floating around in nothingness.

judgeJust as the judge declares an adoption finalized to the waiting parents of their chosen child(ren), God does the same with us. Our adoptions are finalized with Him – never to be cancelled, revoked, rescinded, denounced or disowned. Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend our God like this when we understand and know rejection too well.  It takes a big step of faith to believe in Him, but for some it’s even a step further to believe God won’t change His mind about us. He is the faithful One.   God won’t fool us.

A Modern Take on Grandma’s Coupons

hances are you think you know what coupons are,  how they work and that they’re something you’ll never use. Chances too are that you’re thinking of the old style paper coupons your grandmother used to clip from newspapers and magazines, carrying them around in her wallet or clipping them to her grocery list. If that sounds familiar, forget all you thought you knew.

Time Magazine reported in 2009 that by the mid-way point in the year 1.6 billion coupons had been redeemed in the U.S. While that number is incredible in itself, what is even more remarkable is who used them.

According to Time, the Nielsen Company reported that serious coupon users included people with incomes greater than $70,000, those living in affluent suburban and country homes, those run by a female head 54 years of age or younger, and those with large families. While the latter may be expected, the former sheds a different light on coupon use.

Nielsen also reported those least likely to use coupons included low income and one-member households, which leads to another little-known fact: that many of the country’s wealthiest people are actually quite frugal and achieved their wealth by saving money wherever and whenever they could. The difference here between those who have and those who have not, is that those who have find the time to save.

That’s the real key to couponing, and why your grandmother’s task looked hopeless: time. The difference today and why it’s important to take a fresh look at couponing is that saving money doesn’t have to mean hours spent flipping through and clipping from newspapers and magazines. Today coupons are available online through central sites, from a wide range of stores and through subscription services that email coupons directly to you.

Greatdeals.com is one site that sorts coupons by store and category and allows members to share coupons. The website promises an uncluttered, easy to understand user experience. One of the biggest advantages is the easy access to stores you already know and stores you may not have thought of for coupons.

Best Buy, Drugstore.com and Macys are just a few and show the diversity of stores who participate. A recent look at Macys on Greatdeals.com offered coupons ranging from 25 per cent off men’s and women’s North Face clothing to 40 per cent off bedding.

With sites like Groupon.com you enter your location, register and automatically receive coupons valid in your area direct to your computer. With a range including everything from travel to car detailing to restaurants there may be services you aren’t interested in but with the work managed for you, what is there to lose?

Financial guru Dave Ramsey, author of several financial self-help books and host of the nationally syndicated self-titled radio show, has jumped on the coupon bandwagon. He suggests those who have given in to the iphone trend make use of the phone to discover the many couponing apps available.

Apps like SnipSnap allow you to photograph coupons for use from your phone and the Yipit app sorts daily deals in your area and sends them in one summary email.

The advantage to these couponing sites and apps is the use of search engines and regionally specific criteria to help make the work of finding savings easier.

The next thing you need to understand is the power of coupons. Forget the days of being excited to save $0.50 off cereal, although once you discover the value of couponing you’ll realize enough of those $0.50 equates to a meal out you hadn’t planned on or an extra payment towards your debt. Think 25 per cent off the previously mentioned North Face clothing deal at Macys and you’ve saved $50 off next year’s winter jacket.

Once you discover the value of couponing, you may find yourself becoming a coupon expert. Like the experts seen on shows like Extreme Couponing you too will know the difference between buy one get one free and 50 per cent off, understand the value of stackable coupons and how to combine in-store discounts with brand discounts, see the value of buying in bulk to capture savings when they are available. Ok, maybe not. Chances are good though that you’ll never pay full price for toilet paper or cleaning supplies again.

Start today by investing an hour to check out the sites and apps available to you. Commit to watching those for a month, keep track of your savings and you too will understand the value of the coupon.

MIGHTY

his weeks’ word is not in my everyday speech very often. But a part of the word is in my language – and I imagine as well with my readers.  

I might not be able to make it through this.
I might not be good enough.
My baby might be getting sick.
I might get in an accident
My baby might not be gaining enough weight.
He might leave me.
She might not be my friend.
I might fail.
I might get cancer.
I might not be a good mom.  

When we get these things going in our minds of what might happen, we need remember first, 

Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true,
whatever is noble,
whatever is right,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable—
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—
think about such things

(Note how the word might is never used in this verse!)

So what do we do with the “mights” in our lives?  We can turn to our Mighty God, who is mighty in power, who knows all and loves us beyond measure and wants the best for us and our loved ones  the Mighty One who does not have might as part of His vocabulary — who has been faithful generation after generation and we can repeat His mighty acts and things He has done for us from generations behind us to generations before us.  

Might we get might out of our vocabulary and trust this Mighty Rock, because of His great power and mighty strength?

Daily Prompt: Moments to Remember

What are the three most memorable moments — good or bad, happy or sad — in your life? Go!

IF

you have read my blog for awhile, you probably could name my top memorable moments –  the births of my dozen children, the deaths of two of my children, the birth of my grand-daughter, the marriages of three of my children, the heart surgeries for my daughter, etc.  Instead, I am going to tell about my third born child and the miracles in his life and how God has so uniquely protected his life.

He’s my third born son, now 24 years old. He had spinal meningitis when he was barely a week old.  I remember the screams from his little body as they poked and poked his spine but could not get it just right.  He came through it, by God’s grace, with no side affects.  Miracle #1

Jayson1 My husband was building a small pole barn building and our son was probably 4 years old and very much interested in what daddy was doing, wanting to “help”. As my husband was putting some boards up very high, one came down and hit him in the head, knocking him down.  My husband swooped him up and rushed him into the house. He was crying, but we could find no bumps or bruises.  Miracle #2

This same son, got too close to me when he was about 6 years old, as I turned around from the stove with a potful of soup and bumped right into him, spilling down the front of him.  I ran after him with a pitcher of cold water.  We took him in to the doctor and he was treated.  He has a small scar from it.  Miracle #3

Years later when he was probably 14 or 15 years old he was cutting our lawn on a lawn tractor and did not see a hole the dogs had dug, hit it with one wheel, got out of it quick, but with the quickness of it, it made him steer into the neighbor’s chain link fence.  He kept going – through it, the link fencing loosening, and him ducking down,  Besides a few scratches from the fencing, he was unhurt.  Our neighbors saw it happen, and thought for sure, it was going to kill him. Miracle #4

And then he began to drive a three wheeler – maybe to get mom used to him driving a car.  The neighbors called me on him – he was driving too fast.  He flipped it one day, did not get hurt, so when he flipped it a few days later and was hurt, this mom did not give much sympathy.  His shoulder hurt and his dad ended up taking him into ER.  In the meantime, his younger brother went out to get the three-wheeler near the end of our drive and found a metal strap had caught in the front wheel which is why it stopped suddenly and flipped it.  It was not the way he was driving it.  So, I went to the hospital to apologize and then found out he’d need surgery which included three pins in his shoulder.  He made it through two surgeries for this – putting the pins in and taking them out.  It was such a painful surgery for him.  I am thankful it was only his shoulder – not his neck or back or his life.  Miracle #5

Jayson2Yes, he’s now driving a car.  I am sure I do not know about the many close calls – he knows how to protect my heart!  But there was one time, I was texting him, not knowing he was driving, and he went off the road and hit a tree and got stuck on a stump.  He did let me know later what happened, that he was ok – and then found out it was when I was texting him.  Ugh.  I was not happy, but very thankful that God protected him.  Miracle #6  

This now 24 year old young man is now managing and operating a cellular phone repair store which he opened and is about to open another one.  He has a God-given gift with music – with both singing and playing a guitar. I know God has something special planned for his future, and it’s neat to see how it unfolds for him and remember how God protected him through numerous, what could have been, life taking incidents.  

I love you my double-dimpled darling – proud of you too!

Five Minute Friday: JOY

JOY

Start . . .

My

first thought with the word joy is my daughter, Jessica Joy who has had three open heart surgeries, and lets Jesus’ joy shine through her in such a beautiful way. She loves people, especially the “least of these” and has a heart for the hurting. But you can read more about her here.  JOYFUL in Hope?  Patient in Affliction?  YIKES!  HOW?????

But what else comes immediately to mind is my verse for this year:

Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction,
faithful in prayer.
Romans 12:12

I have by no means conquered this verse, but God keeps reminding me of it, over and over again, especially, when I question . . . when I ask, what if, how, why, where are you God in this, etc. Sometimes A LOT of times it’s just plain hard to find joy when so much can come crashing down. Ultimately I know there is hope, but how long til we get that hope that will bring joy – right?  NO – God says to be joyful IN the hope!  THAT is the hard part! That is what God is reminding me of. That no matter what, there is hope and I can rejoice and have joy in that.  

Ohhh, so much easier said than done . . . but there IS a light at the end of the tunnel – God just does not tell us how long that tunnel will be (and many times we probably do not want to know!) but I can have joy that no matter what happens, how much it hurts, how much sense it does not make, how many tears I’ve cried, and how scary the journey may seem, there IS hope and that I can be joyful in.  

And the next part of the verse is just as hard – to be patient in affliction.  Ugh.  seems like a lot at once, doesn’t it?  To be joyful in hope AND patient in affliction?!?!?  The next line sums it up – helps us to accomplish this – faithful in prayer.  

I just wonder, how much more joy and patience I’d have, with more faithfulness in prayer.

Thankful Thursday & including Three-Words-A-Day

I

do not recall ever looking so hard for signs of spring as we are this year!Thankful Thursday Yesterday my husband pointed out patches of green grass where a bit of snow has melted.  The calendar says today  is the first day of spring, but, the thermometer sure is not agreeing as we keep stoking up the wood furnace. The prediction for next week is numerous days not even getting above freezing.  Ugh.  3 WordsI did hang sheets out this past week to dry, opened some windows briefly just to get some fresh air in the house and we are trying to force grow some spring flowers in the house.  If it won’t do it outside, then bring it inside! My youngest daughter is wearing shorts and a tank top today – she told me it’s spring so she’s dressing like it!  So we can kinda pretend spring is here – though it seems right now it may never arrive!grandbaby

So what am I thankful for?  Of course, I remain thankful for the sweetness our grandbaby brings us. She certainly is the spark in our lives and when with us, there’s always arms ready to hold and love on her. She’s almost 6 months old and we are enjoying her new growing experiences and especially watching her mama, (our daughter) as she continues to enjoy motherhood and the newness of each new delight with her baby.  

I am thankful, that, overall besides slight colds, we’ve had a very healthy winter. No flu bugs.  I am so very thankful for a warm house and a man who has worked so very well with my husband delivering wood.  I am thankful that finally on Monday we will be getting propane after being nearly empty for many  weeks.  I feel it’s been like the miracle of feeding the 5000. The last time we got propane was beginning of September, and it was not even a complete fill . . . and somehow, it’s lasted over six months – for 7 of us and before Christmas was 8 of us! It’s amazing how quick we can take showers and how quickly clothes drying just hanging on hangers in the bathroom and bedrooms.  I am so looking forward to using the oven after several months not using with trying to conserve the propane.  

panI am thankful for my new big deep frying pan I found at Good Will about a month ago, thinking it would help to make some meals in it rather than using the stove or oven. My family likes it too. I had never made fried chicken before.  I’d do the “Shake-n-Bake” type and stick it in the oven. I really had never fully fried chicken.  Well, it’s been a hit here and it’s an easy economical meal to make!  I am thankful the way God provided again with the frying pan and enjoyment from it for the family.  

I am thankful that my dad is healthy especially since the death of my mom, ten years tomorrow.  I am thankful that he has done well with a recent major move to another state and is adjusting.  I am thankful for his recent encouragement when I have been discouraged.  

And just as God promises joy in the morning, and so often the night seem so long before that joy comes again, just like that joy that does come,  I am thankful spring is coming!

Weekly Writing Challenge: Power of Names

W

ith having a dozen named children,  many have asked how we came up with names or if it was difficult with the younger ones to find names.  I enjoy names.  I enjoy finding the meaning of names.  And with each of our children, we specifically chose names that had meaning – sometimes after someone; sometimes for the time we were in our lives.  As these children grow up, I see how their names really fit them.  I will share about our kid’s names, though with most of our children, I will just share about their middle names.  They are in no particular order too.A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.

Matthew Norman ~ Our “forever 16” year old son in heaven. Matthew means “Gift of God” and how often we do not realize what a treasure someone is til they are gone. His first name a Bible name; his middle name after his dad and grandpa.  Though our Matthew was never a “tax collector” as the Matthew was in Scripture, he was one to be very inventive with ways of making money . . . and his heart was towards missions, even thinking of becoming a missionary pilot.  I like to think that despite the way he died, his story is told to prayerfully prevent other kids from dying as he did – and in a sense, still a missionary.

Levi – our son born a couple years after Matthew was gone – and has the new name Jesus gave Matthew – Levi.  He is not taking Matthew’s place.  Levi means joining or adhere – and we are so thankful for him joining our family after such heartache.

Angela Hope – our daughter born still at 36 weeks.  I cannot remember the name we originally had planned for her, but do remember her middle name was going to be Angela.  We change it to Angela Hope – because of the hope we have in Jesus to see her again.

Bernard – our son’s middle name – named after his dad and grandpa.

Henry – our son’s middle name, after my grandpa.  When he was young he used to think his middle name was either Hungry  or Hurry !  🙂

Faith – After going through a difficult time, switching churches, being criticized for “falling away” from legalistic Christianity, our faith still was strong.

Melody Grace – This name so goes together – After our daughter born still, because of God’s grace we were given a new melody in our home to allow our hearts to sing again.

Timothy – son named after an uncle and after Timothy in the Bible.  Timothy means meaning honoring God, or dear to God, something I pray for all my children.

Louise & Jean – Middle names of twin daughters – named after both sides of family.

Heidi – named after the Heidi book – my favorite childhood book.  She then named her daughter Elsie, after her favorite childhood book, Elsie Dinsmore.

Jessica Joy – I’ve written about her a lot on my blog.  She’s my only child born at home and child who has triumphed through three open heart surgeries and gallbladder surgery.  Jessica means “God beholds”.  And joy – well you know that.  Despite her heart surgeries and spinal problems, she is a joyful girl who radiates Jesus.

Rose – A daughter who truly has rosy cheeks, who loves to sing for Jesus.

I probably could write a book on all their names – so many stories came to mind with each of my children, how their names fit them – how really, God placed their names on our hearts to give them.

Inspire Me Monday: #ImBornTo Love Ring Bling !!

hat girl doesn’t love a little bling every so often?  Though I do not wear a lot of jewelry, I like to have fun with it sometimes, especially with rings.  And, I like to gift rings, especially to my girls.  It’s exciting to find rings that fit their personality – such as one daughter likes antique keys, another owls and another likes various things with mustaches.  This past Christmas I found all my girls rings that seem to fit them – from the real girly ones, to the over-the-top eccentric type. And I did it quite inexpensively. These rings were not about how much gold or silver or gemstones were in them. It was about something fun.  Each of the girl’s rings were under $10 – most under $5.

Five Minute Friday: CROWD

CROWD

I

 don’t like crowdsI don’t like shopping either, if there is a crowd of people.  I don’t do Black Friday shopping.  Too many people.  I can even have a panic attack being at a ladies retreat – with a crowd of women, not knowing where I fit in or who to sit with.  

tubAnd, sometimes at home, it can also seem like there’s a crowd.  It can be one of those days when the kids have tattled one too many times, the phone has rung one too many times with either no one there or some soliciting calls . . . .the kids are still tattling . . . the Awana book is still missing along with the youngest’s glasses (again) and now, instead of the kids tattling . . . they are yelling the other child’s offenses real loud so I can hear them.  Calgon take me away is not far enough away.  There’s a crowd in this house and I need some time ALONE!  (Yes, you can send me to time out – alone somewhere!)

No, I do not feed crowds like Jesus did – but sometimes five kids can seem like 5000 pressing in on me when the winter has dragged on and the kids need to run as much as I need ALONE.  An escape to my bedroom with no banging on the door, or mama can I come in; where are you mama, or can I have a snack  for just 20 minutes, sounds like an escape.  A weekend away to a cabin or hotel, alone, sounds wonderful too! It certainly was not that Jesus did not like the crowd of people. He loved them beyond measure.  But He too needed space. He knew He was going to die for them.  But He needed time away, alone, to pray and be with His Father.

I am learning to feel not guilty for wanting and needing time alone, from my mini crowd, that it is ok, to go to my room to read, alone, to pray, alone, to just breath, alone!
