OUR STORY
1994
CAIR was founded to advance American Muslim civil rights. Won first settlement. First state chapter established.
1995
Issued first anti-Muslim discrimination report. Began education campaign about Islamic holidays and practices.
1996 - 1999
CAIR won first hijab case, issued first-ever Muslim Civil Rights report, and successfully pressured Nike to recall offensive shoes.
2001
CAIR meets with White House to addressed post-9/11 discrimination. Released first census of U.S. mosques.
2000s
CAIR won legal battles against employment and religious discrimination. Established 16 new CAIR chapters.
2010 - 2012
CAIR blocks certification of an anti-Muslim constitutional amendment in Oklahoma; won lawsuit to permanently block it. Issued first Islamophobia report.
2017
CAIR protested and challenged Muslim travel ban executive order
2018
Launched first-ever nationwide Muslim Civil Rights Educational Tour
2019
CAIR won major First Amendment case
2020 – 2022
CAIR wins landmark BDS case; mobilized Muslim voting; obtained leaked copy of secret No Fly list; CAIR’s advocacy established International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
2023
CAIR announces launch of offices in North Carolina and other states, bringing total number of CAIR chapters and offices nationwide to a historic peak of 27.
2023
CAIR received 8,061 complaints in 2023, the highest number of complaints CAIR has ever recorded and a 56% increase over the prior year due to the Gaza genocide and surge in anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian hate.
2024
CAIR argued against structural Islamophobia and the FBI’s watchlist abuses before the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time -- and won a historic, unanimous 9-0 verdict.
