Official Trailer for 'Breakdown: 1975' Doc - About 1970s Era Cinema
"Movies were made back then that didn't pander to trend." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a fascinating cinema documentary film called Breakdown 1975 – ready for release in just a few weeks from now. Not a long wait at all! Made by the Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, Piece by Piece) who also has another doc next year called Man on the Run. Featuring narration by Jodie Foster. This is a look back at the radical 1970s era cinema and how everything changed with American films in the 70s after the revolutionary 60s. "'75 was the most important moment in the history of the film business." In 1975, as America faced great social and political upheaval, filmmakers turned chaos into art. This film explores how a turbulent era gave rise to iconic movies like Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network, Jaws, Nashville, etc. Featuring tons of name names: Albert Brooks, Ellen Burstyn, Josh Brolin, Kurt Andersen, Martin Scorsese, Naomi Fry, Oliver Stone, Patton Oswalt, Peter Bart, Peter Biskind, Rick Perlstein, Sam Wasson, Seth Rogen, Dr. Todd Boyd, & others. Enjoy.

Must See Trailer for 'The Plague' with Everett Blunck & Joel Edgerton
"Why are you doing this to me?" Jump right in! Independent Film Company has revealed the first official trailer for The Plague, one of the most intriguing indie film discoveries of 2025. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews from critics, calling out everything from the cinematography to the haunting score (heard in this trailer) to these performances from the kids. From writer / director Charlie Polinger – a socially awkward tween endures the ruthless hierarchy while at a water polo camp, his anxiety spiraling into psychological turmoil over the summer. This stars Joel Edgerton as their coach, Everett Blunck as Ben, Kayo Martin as Jake, and Kenny Rasmussen as Eli. The film is a clever, slick thriller about bullying and the way kids pick on other kids; it's not horror despite the title. I'm lucky to be quoted in this trailer from my Cannes review: "this is proper filmmaking firing on all cylinders." It's out in theaters at Christmas first, then expands to more theaters in early 2026. Keep an eye out for this film coming up soon.

A tale of what happens when someone tries to... play God. This excellent animated short is now available to watch online thanks to Animatic, Short of the Week, and Studio Croma Animation. Playing God is a stop-motion animated short film by Italian filmmakers Matteo Burani & Arianna Gheller. A clay sculpture comes to life in the darkness of a workshop, surrounded by strange creatures... Playing God made the cut in the first shortlist selection for the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short Film category. The filmmakers introduce it: "After more than a year of traveling around the world through Film Festivals, we’d like to open a small window into how the short film Playing God was made. 7 years in the making for 9 minutes of stop motion animation, one of the biggest and most meaningful challenges in the history of our independent animation studio. With this project, we wanted to push beyond our limits, experimenting with the stop-motion medium without compromises, blending art, technique, & passion into a single vision." Hilarious Trailer for 'Free Bert' Comedy Series Starring Bert Kreischer
"The pig requires a little lipstick..." Ahaha this looks like a ton of fun. Netflix has revealed a funny official trailer for a new comedy series called Free Bert, starring shirtless comedian Bert Kreischer. It's not a stand up comedy special, this is actually a series - starring Bert Kreischer as himself learning that he must find out how to "look sharp" when his daughters get into an elite Beverly Hills private school. Bert moved into acting & movies a few years ago starring in the movie The Machine also about his own story. Now he's continuing with his new self-centered series (ha ha). When his unbridled antics turn his family into pariah, he decides to “put on a shirt” and stifle his true nature to better fit in. The series stars Bert Kreischer, Arden Myrin, Ava Ryan, Lilou Lang, Christine Horn, Chris Witaske, along with Mandell Maughan, Sophia Reid-Gantzert, Robert Jon Mello, Braxton Alexander, Matthew Del Negro. This one is worth a look.
Teaser for Science Saru's 'Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia' Animation
"This is the tale of a witch..." Science Saru in Japan has unveiled the first look teaser for an animated film titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia being directed by animation filmmaker Abel Gongora (of Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off"). One of the next animation projects from the iconic studio Science Saru (Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, Ride Your Wave). This is the story of one witch who toyed with a vast continent. The film is set for a TV debut in Japan in July 2026 - no theaters for this. Set in the 13th century during the reign of Emperor Genghis Khan and his march through the Mongolian Empire - one girl messes with his plans in Iran after becoming educated by scholars. This is the story of Jaadugar, the "witch in Mongolia". When he arrives "her quiet days come to an end, and the wheels of fate begin to turn." The final voice cast has not been announced yet. This animation style reminds me of the very lovely Little Amelie animated film also out this year. Stay tuned for any updates on Jaadugar leading up to its release next year.

First Look at the 'Madden' Movie Starring Nicolas Cage as John Madden
"There's only one John Madden – they didn't make another one!" Amazon MGM Studios has revealed the first teaser trailer for the Madden movie - out to watch at Thanksgiving 2026 a year from now. This teaser initially aired during the NFL games on Christmas Day this week. From director David O. Russell following his last movie Amsterdam (ugh), comes this true story of the one-and-only football maven John Madden. Madden follows the football legend from Super Bowl glory with the Oakland Raiders to revolutionizing the game with the video game Madden NFL. The very first version of the football video game debuted in 1988 (as "John Madden Football") for MS-DOS & Apple II, evolving during the 1990s. Starring Nicolas Cage as John Madden, with Christian Bale as Al Davis, Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, John Mulaney as EA founder Trip Hawkins, Sienna Miller, Shane Gillis, and Joel Murray as Pat Summerall. This looks extra kooky & fun - reminds me of that Tetris movie Apple TV made recently. Stay tuned for more in 2026.

Charlize Theron & Taron Egerton in Nature Survival Film 'Apex' Teaser
"You're playing a game – is that what you think we're doing?" "You guessed right." Will she win? Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for a survival thriller titled Apex, the latest by adventure filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur (of The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath, Adrift, Beast). When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn't the only thing out for blood. Netflix has this set for streaming debut in April 2026 - skipping theaters entirely unfortunately. A woman testing her limits in the Australian wilderness is suddenly ensnared in a deadly game with a "ruthless predator" – clearly this angry man out to get her. Starring Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Oz's favorite Eric Bana. Shot on location in Australia in the real outdoors including in rivers. "Working in the rugged, beautiful terrains of Australia with 3 of the world's most talented, dedicated actors is such a joy — even as I put them through the [ringer] in this unique survivor story," Kormakur says. One helluva thrilling first look teaser! Check this out.

Tallulah Evans in Kidnapping Thriller Series 'Girl Taken' Official Trailer
"I want to go home..." "This is home!" Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for a streaming mini-series titled Girl Taken, a freaky kidnapping thriller and survival story ready to watch starting in January. Another crime story to scare anyone who watches. Based on Hollie Overton's novel "Baby Doll", the series follows Lily & Abby, twin sisters living in a rural English village. Their peaceful lives are shattered when Lily is abducted by Rick Hansen, a respected local teacher who is well-liked in the community. Years later, Lily manages to escape. But reclaiming her freedom proves to be more complicated than she imagined: the world she once idealized has moved on without her. As Abby, Lily, and their mum Eve strive to rebuild their lives, the scars of the past resurface, especially since Rick remains at large, willing to twist the truth to serve his own narrative. Raw & emotionally charged, this is a gripping exploration of trauma, resilience, sisterhood, and the high cost of reclaiming one’s life. The 7-part series stars Alfie Allen and Jill Halfpenny as Rick and Eve, with sisters Tallulah Evans & Delphi Evans as Lily and Abby. Looks very creepy & disquieting.

Holiday Teaser for 'The Rip' Movie Starring Ben Affleck & Matt Damon
"We got you something special–" "The gift of never-before-seen footage from The Rip." Netflix has debuted a Christmas Day teaser trailer for The Rip which will be streaming to watch starting early January (here's the first teaser). A new gritty action thriller from director Joe Carnahan - who also made another movie recently called Shadow Force. This time he's teamed up with Ben Affleck & Matt Damon together in a new film as pals. Though they're in trouble – caught between the criminals and cops. Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the money, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on. Carnahan says the film is an extension of the "cop film genre", adding that it has "a real-life component, a very emotional core, and a key question that gets posed throughout the film: Are we the good guys?" A.W.T.G.G.! Damon & Affleck co-star, with Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler. Glad to see them together again - but will this be any good? It's worth a look.

Watch: Patrick & Kyle's 25 Best Films of 2025 - Full Video Countdown
"Can we go again? I'd like another one..." Time for another recap of this last year in cinema. While we wait for David Ehrlich's annual countdown video (arriving in early January) here's another one looking back at the best of the year. This video countdown is put together by movie lovers Kyle Wilson and Patrick Ryan - featuring their combined picks for the 25 Best Films of 2025. Time to find out what won them over in 2025! (Watch their 2024 video here.) This also includes a very entertaining montage - an intro packed with other films that didn't make the cut and an impressive soundtrack of songs for their look back at the year in film. I'm very happy to see a number of more unique picks in their Top 25 - including Mickey 17, Roofman, Friendship (hilarious film), Eephus (still so good), Black Bag, Blue Moon, and even the very funny legacy sequel The Naked Gun. Also interetsing to note - they used this Hamnet shot for the title card in the video, yet surprisingly Hamnet is nowhere to be found within this Top 25 at all. So be it. Plenty others to celebrate.

Enjoy This Star Wars Mini Recreation - Gingerbread Trench Run Scene
"It's a fun little puzzle to find: what's the essence of this? Why is this scene I saw when I was 6 years old work for me now?" Lucasfilm & ILM have released the first fun Star Wars Mini video - a recreation of the classic Death Star Trench Run in George Lucas' classic Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope but remade entirely with gingerbread. A festive (and tasty) holiday remix of this all-timer action scene! "Luke Skywalker faces his greatest challenge yet: defeating cookie Darth Vader and the Gingerbread empire." Ha ha. This new Star Wars Mini video series is just a playful way to bring new life and rethink these fan-favorite moments from all of the Star Wars movies. In the third promo video below, they also hint at a crochet recreation of Empire Strikes Back along with other scenes like Anakin podracing, Grogu waddling around & more. They explain the idea for the Minis simply as: "Artists at ILM use new technology to transform movie scenes and reimagine them in unique styles." It's just a fun video throwback to this iconic moment in Star Wars history.
Teaser for Cillian Murphy's 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' Movie
"I'm not that man anymore..." Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Peaky Blinders film - a spin-off creation titled Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, bringing back the award-winning series. It's already set for release in March next year - including showing in theaters for two weeks before it's out to watch on Netflix. Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy returns as the iconic Tommy Shelby in this epic feature film directed by Tom Harper and written by creator Steven Knight. During World War II, Tommy returns to a bombed Birmingham and becomes involved in secret wartime missions based on true events, facing new threats as he reckons with his past and rising national stakes. The full cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Jay Lycurgo, with Barry Keoghan and Stephen Graham. Surprised to see Netflix giving this a real release in theaters, but that's good news, especially for fans of the series who've never really had any chance to enjoy this on the big screen. Check out the first look below and stay tuned for more updates in 2026. Welcome back, Tommy.
