While it has been in operation for nearly 30 years, Clone shows no sign of creative inertia. The scope and breadth of this compilation shows that the opposite is true. DJ Sotofett drops a downtempo electro track on "Take Me To A Silent Place (Sun mix)", while Felipe Gordon's and Kingdom Come both deliver jazzy deep house. On a deep techno tip, there's Tom Carruthers' Detroit-influenced "Technique" and "I Dream Of You", the sublime, chiming contribution from Sub Club resident Domenic Cappello. The compilation also features harder sounds, including the glitchy broken beats of Aleksi Perala's "FI3AC2511704" and the high-paced electro funk of Alden Tyrell & Detroit In Effect's "Mission Complete".
Inspired by rave, electro and break beat, Double Vision is a killer dance floor EP. The title track resounds to shuffling 808s and a nagging groove, peppered with infectious riffs. "Reductor" is in a similar vein, as K-65 marries speak and spell tones with a gut busting bass that winds its way through the arrangement. "Bomb Strut" ratchets up the intensity levels. Its combination of squelchy bass and shrieking siren riffs makes for the release's biggest dance floor track. K-65 also collaborates with label owner Phasmid on "Datura". Favouring a stripped back approach, its lithe rhythm resounds to chopped up vocals and warbling bass tones.
Although Alden Tyrell still produces music, he's much more sought after these days as a mastering and mixing engineer. There was a time though, in the late 90s and early 2000s, when he was one of the leading lights on the Dutch neo-Italo, analogue techno and hard-wired electro scenes. First released two decades ago, debut album Times Like These 1999-2006 charts this period in his career. Now sounding fatter than ever thanks to his own top-notch remastering job, it remains a stellar set. For proof, check fizzing opening throb-job 'Phase Me', the raw, I-F-esque Hague Italo darkness of 'Love Explosion', the glossy and spacey joy of 'Mindless', and the ghostly lead lines and pulsating, arpeggio-style bass of the Dutchman's biggest early underground club hit, 'Lunar Disco Module'.
It's been over 20 years since Gregor Tresher released an album under his Sniper Mode alias. Thankfully, Riot Gear is worth the wait. Recent single "Blinded By The Dark" is a collaboration with Dave Clarke, and it's a slab of epic, brooding dance floor electro. In contrast, Ekzakt's vocodered vocals appear on the beautifully mournful "Echoes From a Wasted Land", while Black Nation boss Jay Denham contributes a freaked out vocal narrative on the bleak but understated "Sanctuary of Vices". For the most part though Tresher flies solo, and his mastery of the electro form is audible throughout - from the frenetic, rolling "Harvester" to the dystopian pulses of "It Doesn't Matter If We All Die" and the pared back 808s of "Infrapunch".
Hot on the heels of LOVEFOXY's recent Lord Juice release, Warehouse Project has commissioned this superb remix project. DJ Love's take on the title track resounds to filtered crescendos and a relentless garage bass, with chopped up vocals playing out in the background. It makes for a distinctive take on contemporary UK house. The label deserves serious kudos for tapping Detroit In Effect to rework "On Da Table". The mysterious Motor City act doesn't release many remixes, and this one is unmissable. Resounding to their signature 808s, cut-up vocals and hardcore-era synths unfold in hypnotic fashion. Thelma's reshape of "Just Not Cute" blends dubbed out techno with call-and-response vocals, rounding off an iconoclastic package.
Last year, veteran producer Keith Tenniswood, (formerly known for being one-half of 2 Lone Swordsman) came out with his sixth full length album Jam Out The Kicks. This new collection features cuts from the album remixed by others and himself that create new experiences with each original. 'Sinkhole (Radioactiveman Dub 1)' has a dubwise groove with Chloe Raunet and Ali Love's vocals floating beautifully over it. Ara-U's remix of 'Do It Till You're Satisfied' flips into gritty sci-fi electro while 'See Above' remix by See Below, sharpens the edges with a bubbling bassline, crisp mechanics and ultra-futuristic. Jerome Hill's version of 'Yew Got 2 B Yew' is a warehouse weapon that is stomping, dirty and funky enough to make a breakdancer go mad. DBridge's mix of 'The Clappers' is a crazy IDM-tinged electro that is intricate and tightly controlled, recalling the playful creativity of early Aphex Twin. Highlights near the end of the release, round out the album nicely with a change of pace in drum n bass and jungle. Ben Pest's take on 'Dread Carpet' is a high velocity jungle track while 'Show You' is a compilation addition to complete the gamut with a drum & bass that is melodic and fluid. Overall, a dynamic set that offers some excellent remixes extending the original album even further.
