How healthy are Brazil nuts really: New study elucidates trace elements in the seeds   Brazil nuts are known as “#selenium bombs” and are consumed as a natural dietary supplement. However, they do not only contain this essential nutrient, but also traces of potentially problematic metals like #barium and radioactive #radium. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the #VKTA – Radiation Protection, Analytics & Disposal Rossendorf Inc. have now conducted the first systematic study on the amounts of these elements that could actually enter the body during the digestive process. Our Department of Experimental Neuro-Oncological Radiopharmacy at the HZDR Research Site Leipzig has commissioned a new benchtop NMR spectrometer. The instrument enables rapid structural characterization of newly synthesized intermediates, which are key building blocks in the development of radiopharmaceuticals for brain tumor imaging and therapy. Having direct access to NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) significantly accelerates our synthetic workflows, improves quality control, and strengthens the close integration of chemistry, radiopharmacy, and molecular imaging at the Leipzig site. This investment enhances our local research infrastructure and supports our ongoing efforts to translate innovative chemical concepts into next-generation radiotracers for neuro-oncology. Kick-off für SAXFUSION 🚀 Heute fällt am Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) der offizielle Startschuss für SAXFUSION, das sächsische Netzwerk rund um Fusionsforschung und Fusionstechnologien. Vertreter*innen aller Partnereinrichtungen kamen zum Auftakt am HZDR zusammen, um gemeinsam Möglichkeiten zur engeren Zusammenarbeit im Bereich Fusion zu diskutieren. Nach der Begrüßung durch den Wissenschaftlichen Direktor des HZDR, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt und die Abteilungsleiterin Forschung am Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft, Kultur und Tourismus, Dr. Babett Gläser, stellten sich die Projektpartner vor. Im weiteren Verlauf erhielten die Gäste zudem Einblicke in den Elektronenbeschleuniger ELBE und tauschten sich dort mit HZDR-Wissenschaftler*innen zu fachlichen Fragestellungen und ersten Kooperationsansätzen aus. Ziel des Netzwerks SAXFUSION ist es, Expertise in Forschung und Innovation zur Fusion und fusionsrelevanten Schlüsseltechnologien zusammenzubringen, strategisch Kompetenzen aufzubauen, den Nachwuchs zu fördern und die Ergebnisse für Industrie und Gesellschaft nutzbar zu machen. Sachsen soll dabei der Nukleus eines Netzwerks sein, das Forschung und Industrie vernetzt und über Sachsen hinaus in Deutschland, Europa und weltweit wirksam wird. Koordiniert wird das Vorhaben durch das HZDR und das Fraunhofer IWS. Die Europäische Union und der Freistaat Sachsen fördern das Vorhaben mit rund 2,4 Millionen Euro aus dem Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung (EFRE). Mit dem Kick-off startet die gemeinsame Arbeit im Netzwerk SAXFUSION – für neue Ideen, technologische Entwicklungen und starke Forschungsperspektiven auf dem Gebiet der Kernfusion. Laser light and the quantum nature of gravity: New concept for energy transfer between gravitational waves and light   When two black holes merge or two neutron stars collide, gravitational waves can be generated. They spread at the speed of #light and cause tiny distortions in #space-time. Albert Einstein predicted their existence, and the first direct experimental observation dates from 2015. Now, Prof. Ralf Schützhold, theoretical physicist at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), is going one step further. He has conceived an experiment through which gravitational waves can not only be observed but even manipulated. Building Bridges Between Science and Industry: In early December, we welcomed Dr. David Giltner (Turning Science, Colorado) to HZDR to share insights on how scientists can turn academic excellence into sustainable industry impact. His first stop was Project T360 – Transfer Strategies for Sustainable and Trustworthy Cooperation, which is now entering its final phase. Together with our partners Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV, ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, and Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden, we met at the COSMO Science Forum to work on the final steps of a practical guideline supporting researchers in building long-term, trust-based industry collaborations. Giltner highlighted the importance of personal communication, trust, strategic team design, and ethical collaboration. His Industry White Paper provides a strong foundation for this work. Further stops included a keynote on diversifying research funding through sustainable industry #partnerships, discussions with HZDR innovation managers, and a workshop of the HZDR Career Center supporting doctoral researchers and postdocs in translating their scientific expertise into diverse professional contexts. The visit demonstrated how powerful dialogue, reflection, and #collaboration are for strengthening the bridge between #science, #industry, and #society. We look forward to finalizing the T360 guideline and continuing this shared journey.
