Sun King has raised $40 million in equity financing from Lightrock to scale our operations. Lightrock brings a long-standing commitment to energy access and deep experience supporting the growth of leading high-impact, clean energy companies around the world. This investment strengthens our ability to reach millions more people with affordable, reliable power. “Lightrock brings a deep understanding of our customers’ needs and a clear commitment to expanding access to energy,” said T. Patrick Walsh, CEO and Co-Founder of Sun King. “Sun King has grown from delivering 10,000 solar kits a month in 2017 to more than 330,000 each month today. We are working to expand to one million solar kits each month by 2030 to meet the basic energy needs of at least 200 million people, and this investment is part of the overall financing required to reach that operational scale.” Arul Thomas, Partner at Lightrock, added: "Sun King exemplifies the type of proven, scalable solution we seek to support at Lightrock. The team's execution ability in growing to serve 50 million people is truly laudable, and we are delighted to partner with them as they continue expanding their customer offering, operations, and international presence to address the critical global challenge of energy access.” For more details, see Axios’ coverage and the announcement linked in the comments.

600 million people across Africa still live without electricity. #Mission300 calls for that number to be halved or more by 2030. To push forward this bold global effort, Sun King plans to deploy 50 million solar kits by 2030, bringing first-time or improved energy access to 200 million people by 2030. That's one-third of Africa's off-grid population and two-thirds of the Mission 300 target.

In case you missed it: Sun King recently announced a landmark commitment on stage at Global Citizen NOW: Johannesburg 2025. Our VP for Public Policy and Government Relations, Dr Wale Aboyade, PhD, shared our plans to deploy 50 million new solar kits across Africa over the next 5 years, aiming to reach 200 million people by 2030. Amounting to over $5.6 billion in solar equipment deployed, we will add 3,800 MW of new distributed solar capacity, creating more than 45,000 new jobs and opening 1,200 new retail shops across the continent. From selling 10,000 solar kits a month in 2017 to over 330,000 kits every month today, we expect to exceed one million kits every month by the end of 2030, bringing clean, affordable electricity to hundreds of millions of people faster than ever before. This ambition is our contribution to a much larger collective effort. Mission 300 has set a clear, urgent rallying point: universal access for 300 million people by 2030. Delivering it will take a diverse set of partners, financiers, governments, and innovators pulling in the same direction. Sun King’s commitment could account for as much as two-thirds of #Mission300’s target. This target looks to bring almost one-third of the world's off-grid population into modern electricity access, pushing forward real progress on SDG7.
