We just released two software betas: Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS and the COSMIC desktop are moving on to the next phase! Following our ethos of user freedom, the new COSMIC desktop environment empowers users with the ability to customize their software to make it work for them. By removing obstacles to focus, users can accelerate discovery and make computing fun. With COSMIC, users can make their UI single- or dual-panel, workspaces horizontal or vertical, tiled or floating, dynamic or pinned (static), add new keyboard shortcuts, change Caps Lock, arrange applets (features on panels), create and share themes, and even add custom fonts or icons. One of our goals in designing the COSMIC desktop was to keep obstacles out of the user's way, preserving focus and discovery. With Workspaces, users can hide clutter and give attention only to the windows that matter towards completing their task. In the workspace overview, users can organize their windows and workspaces how they like, using mouse or keyboard shortcuts. Move windows and workspaces between displays, and pin workspaces to keep them active — even after restarting your computer. COSMIC takes its first step towards empowering discovery on September 25th, when the beta releases alongside the beta for Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, our operating system built in-house. COSMIC Files, built with memory-safe Rust code, makes organization easy for users and devs. Developers are part of our core audience, so it was essential we build in features for them such as file path search and executable permissions. Like with other core COSMIC apps, your custom theme integrates with COSMIC Files. This user is coping with a very hot day.
