Radboud AI

The AI researchers at Radboud University and Radboudumc are working together with businesses and other organisations to take artificial intelligence to the next level. We share expertise in the broadest sense of the word, including in the fields of machine learning, neurotechnology, ethics, and health. Through interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, we promote the development of innovative and socially relevant AI solutions. We do this with Radboud AI: a campus-wide initiative involving all seven faculties of Radboud University and Radboudumc.

Radboud AI: a broad perspective on AI

AI & Energy

How can we use AI to achieve the energy transition? Collaborations in this area include the AI for Energy Grids Lab (ICAI lab) and the strategic partnership with Alliander.

AI & Health

AI is being developed for a wide range of medical applications, from monitoring Parkinson's disease and detecting cancer to diagnosing heart conditions. Collaborations include: Radboud AI for Health (ICAI lab), HealthyAI Lab (ICAI lab), MERAI Lab (ICAI lab), AI for Parkinson Lab (ICAI lab), AI for Precision Health, Nutrition & Behaviour (ICAI lab) and the CARA Lab (ICAI lab) The PersOn programme analyses, using artificial intelligence, both the clinical information on treatment and follow-up as well as the possible impact on the patient’s quality of life, such that patient and health care practitioner can make a shared decision about personalised care.

AI & Language and Speech Technology

Radboud University researchers focus on an innovative development of language and speech technology, including within the Centre for Language and Speech Technology (CLST). Topics range from the use of Large Language Models (LLMs), computational linguistics, natural language processing (NLP), and speech recognition to chatbots, in various application areas. AI & Chemistry

Can AI help us develop new chemical compounds and materials of the future? This is being researched and implemented in the Robotlab for Big Chemistry. This programme will combine chemistry research, high-end robotics technology, big data and AI.

AI & Education

Scientists and companies are collaborating with primary, secondary, and special education on smart technology for teachers and students in the National Education Lab AI (NOLAI). NOLAI researches the opportunities and risks involved with using new intelligent technology in education in practice, together with education and businesses, and it develops reliable products for teachers and students.

AI & Legal, Ethical, and Societal Aspects

How are AI and digitalization changing our norms, practices, and laws? What is the impact of AI and digitalization on our democracy, freedom, justice, solidarity, privacy, security, and ways of working? All of this is being researched within iHub. At the ELSA lab, we study the technological, legal, and clinical-ethical aspects of AI technology that is certified to be used responsibly.

AI & Data

Developing new AI algorithms is only possible with well-structured data. We are establishing a sustainable digital infrastructure for the entire Radboud campus within the Healthy Data programme.

AI basic principles & machine learning

We research and improve AI algorithms through mathematics-based theories, methods, and tools, and train a new generation of machine learning researchers within the ELLIS Unit. Check also Foundations for Robust Runtime monitoring (FuRoRe): the team aims to develop several algorithms applied to warning mechanisms in different domains in a lab setting.

AI & Neurotechnology

AI is being used to restore vision in the blind, hearing in the deaf, and communication possibilities in paralyzed individuals. Additionally, new machine learning algorithms are being developed to create brain-inspired computing technologies. These advancements are taking place at the Donders AI for Neurotech Lab (ICAI lab) and the ASMPT ICAI Lab (ICAI lab).

Aftermovie Radboud AI Event 2025

Over 350 AI professionals attended on Thursday 13 February 2025 at De Vasim. Radboud AI, in collaboration with Radboud Healthy Data, organised the event Collaboration for Sustainable Growth. Keynote speaker Pim Haselager emphasized that "the EU must invest heavily in sustainable AI."

By analyzing brain waves, researchers at Radboud University – including neuroscientist Thirza Dado – have managed to reconstruct, with surprising accuracy, images that test subjects were viewing.

About Radboud AI

Radboud AI encompasses all 7 faculties, more than 200 researchers, 50 PhD students, and 1,000 students. Understanding and simulating the brain also holds a special place within the Bachelor's and Master's AI programmes at Radboud University. Additionally, we have close collaborations with several world-renowned research institutes located on our campus, such as the Donders Institute and the Max Planck Institute.

ELLIS

The European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) brings together excellent academic institutions in the field of machine learning. Radboud University is one of the three universities in the Netherlands with an ELLIS Unit. The mission of the ELLIS Unit Nijmegen is to promote theoretical and applied research in machine learning and to train the next generation of machine learning researchers.

We collaborate with various partners, including other universities and leading industrial partners, at both regional and international levels. As a university, we are deeply embedded in society. It is precisely at the intersection of government, business, societal organisations, and other knowledge and educational institutions that collaboration creates opportunities.
