Hurricane Hanna

The assembly area was a open ground, but it was absolutely pouring this morning! People had to take shelter in the next building. And the wind was strong enough to knock away umbrellas! It was a Tropical Storm (some what due to Hurricane Hanna).

Some idiot pulled the fire alarm this morning at 8.30 in the morning!

So everyone got to evacuate the building. Honestly, I think I could just sleep through the bloody alarm, but my roommate "saved" me. However, something unexpected awaits outside.

Just some background info on Hurricane Hanna,

Durham Bulls Baseball

My parents said, when you're in Rome; act like a Roman. So when I'm in the states, I should act like a good home-grown-sport-loving-fan. Well.... at least I gave baseball a chance!

It was organized by IBC, the International Business Club, the club that makes every effort to make us feel at home =)
They eveb made us read a wikipedia link and some materials on baseball in the email circular.

So we charted a bus and head to the next town in Durham for the game; I get to ride with Dane and Robert on Dane's car, hehe!! Apparently it is a triple A league game (1 level below the top tier competition/ or 1st division if u watch EPL)

Well, I'm gonna save a few thousand words with the following pics.

The stands

Burgers, hotdogs, fries and beers.... The american way!

The durham bull , the head actually moves about when the home team hits a Home Run!

I love the outlets just before u enter the stands. Hotdogs, burgers n fries served with beers in a typical American fashion! I of course, got my fish n chips after being deprived of fish (dun count cat fish) for 2 weeks. And that little entrance-door thingy feels like a scene from The Gladiator!

2 cents about baseball:
It is a pretty boring game though, it is slow and it plays out until e end (ie, no time limit like in soccer/ basketball etc). Thr are 5 minutes of entertainment in btw strikes. I guess it is a family thing (too boring liao, must talk). we of course, pretty much had a great time gettin to know each other a lil better (muz talk!Rmb....)

Matric Fair vs Fall Fest

The NUS Matric fair is a time whr clubs and societies in Uni present themselves to the school community, particularly the freshmen. Fall Fest is the UNC version. But as the name implies, it is a "Fest" rather than"Fair"

First thing first, to have the event on Friday night from 10pm to 1am simply sounds FUN!!
rather than some school-stuff! And to add on that, you've got to keep people happy, constantly!!

Thr're free free burgers, hotdogs and drinks. As well as freebies and games. It surely keeps the mood up, and at some point during the night, you do feel like signing up for everything. Two thumbs up!

Some observation that NUS could benefit,
1) Free food!
2) More goodies n T shirt ( not the ones u hav to pay for)
3) For sports club like handball n frisbies, make it more fun n interactive like having a goalie n a net, let the passer by have a feel of the sport... it could be something they nvr knew the love. ( or a wall climbing rock)

4) For performing clubs, I think video presentation n costumes aren't eye catching enough! We need a god damm stage!, bcoz that is what they do best. Performing arts!

5) But more imptly, a bigger space laaa.,
We used to cramped in the hall for a limited time, with guided traffic flow and those poor ppl on duty hav to be thr for a few days.

Just get evry1 on the field, make it free n easy with no constrain of time, walk n round and mingle/ sign up at your own pace. And Ppl on duty don't need to be stationed for 3 days and every1 goes home happy! Yay!

**Sry for the absence of pictures, my frens have it (but forgot who) will do so in due time.

The overdue first entry

Yeah!!!
Finally, after a wk n half, I got my 1st post up!!
(tho i'm not quite fully settled yet)

But here's a brief summary of the events thus far...

1) Travelled 36 hours from KLIA to Raleigh - SMOOTHYly.
Nowadays Chardonnay comes at $5 per bottle, no longer free =(
And on my flight from Japan to US, I drank more than 8 cups of water to keep hydrated, The american Teen seated next to me had 8 cans of Coke!! A taste of american culture!

2) Spent a night at a buddy's buddy place, somewhere out of no where, but a very nice home that comes with a garage, a well and er... black- n-white-fury-Dog?

Image Image Image

3) I'm in a dorm that has 4 twin sharing rooms, thr're , incld myslef, 4 exchange students in the B-school. All of us got paired up with transferred student (which means local laaa). So altogether 5 nationalities; Aussie, Bulgarian, Malaysian, Spaniard and the US. Woo hoo!!
And erm... it is common for the local students to have fridge/ microwave/Tv and, sometimes, printer.

Tyler n John (guess which wan is the Aussie) ..... Me n Andrew

But the most impressive of them all....

Brett and Francesc

Can you spot the fridge/ Microwave/ Copier, Fax Scanner?

4) UNC is HUGE!!! and it is like a sanctuary (gt church in the sch, which is weird cause we have a very vibrant gay lesbian and homo society here!).

Nearest place to shop is in the next town at Durham, and is only accessible if you have a car =(
So much for taking Singapore's convenience for granted!!

5) Made alot friends and have been to a few local events as well. It helps instilled that "I'm-part-of-UNC thing". Will feature in blogs later. So stay tuned!
