SPEAKERS
The way most creative developers experience the web is completely different from how
most users experience it. For us it's a place to experiment, a technical challenge or a creative playground.
For most users it's "just" a tool to get things done and the really uncomfortable part is, that some of the
things we add to make websites "better", are actively making that harder.
Sometimes it can feel like we're designing experiences for ourselves and just hoping that users can keep up.
This talk shows you how to responsibly add enhancements to your websites.
Let's take CSS where it has not gone before. What would happen if you
took the classic game DOOM and tried to recreate it in CSS? Every wall, floor, ceiling,
barrel, imp and fireball is a <div>. Thousands of them in total, all positioned in
3D space using CSS 3D transforms that will almost bring browsers to their knees. Sprinkle
on a good dose of CSS trigonometry functions, animations, filters, clipping paths,
animations and transitions… and a bit of JavaScript too, and you'll get a fully playable
game - even with network multiplayer support.
The best insights about users and systems come from unexpected places. Two
years supervising a chicken restaurant taught me more about building better experiences than any
classroom ever could.
Between layoffs, AI hype, and a barely-recognizable industry, many of us in
tech are wondering: now what? This talk takes you on a journey to look for answers in unexpected
places — and finds something much greater & more beautiful on the other side.
