NO PIPELINES, NO BACKSLIDING, AND NO HANDOUTS FOR BIG OIL.

The Canadian government’s latest Pipeline MOU with Alberta is a giant gift for Big Oil and marks the final nail in the coffin for Canada’s climate policy.

On June 25th 2026, 40+ communities participated in the People’s MOU national day of action. Together, we called on Members of Parliament to sign a deal with the people — to protect our communities, our climate, and our future.

On June 25th, one week before Alberta’s July 1st deadline to propose a route for the West Coast Pipeline, people from across Canada took action at their local MP offices.

Together, we delivered massive copies of the “People’s MOU” and call on our elected leaders to sign a deal with the people.

We demonstrated widespread public opposition to the federal government’s recent actions to slash climate policies, gut environmental protection, and fast-track destructive fossil fuel projects.

What is the People’s MOU?

It’s an agreement that we are asking our federal leaders to sign with their constituents — a deal to prioritize our communities, our climate, and our future over Big Oil’s profits.

We, the people, commit to defending the safety of our communities, the wellbeing of our ecosystems, and the future of our planet.

And we urge you, as a representative of the Government of Canada, to commit to:

  • Stop fast-tracking destruction: Abandon the dangerous recent proposal that exempts mega-projects from safety and environmental regulations. Protect our communities and the land: Uphold Indigenous rights, environmental protections, and ensure meaningful consultations with impacted communities.
  • Stop building climate-burning pipelines: Reject the proposed toxic tar sands pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific coast, and end all new oil, coal, and gas extraction in Canada. Accelerate the energy transition: Deliver a strong climate action plan and launch a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels while supporting workers and communities.
  • Stop letting Big Oil profit at our expense: Impose a 75% excess profits tax on the wartime windfall of fossil fuel companies and end subsidies for the fossil fuel industry. Fund our future: Invest in East-West-North electricity grids that bring affordable, renewable energy to all, while uplifting Indigenous leadership and creating tens of thousands of good, green jobs.

Press Release

Communities across Canada rally at MPs’ offices for national day of action opposing the federal government’s push for new pipelines and attacks on climate policy

In response to Prime Minister Carney signing the Canada-Alberta MOU, 40 communities from coast to coast joined a national mobilization today to deliver a People’s MOU to their local Member of Parliament. The demands of the people’s MOU are clear: stop fast-tracking destruction, stop building climate-burning pipelines, and stop letting Big Oil profit at our expense.

The People’s MOU Day of Action, coordinated by 350.org Canada, is taking place one week before the deadline for Alberta to propose a route for its new West Coast Pipeline, which would endanger communities, destroy ecosystems, and increase the emissions that drive extreme heat. This day of action also marks the five-year anniversary of the BC Heat Dome, the deadliest extreme-weather event in Canadian history.

“Today is the 5-year anniversary of the heat dome, when 619 people in my province lost their lives due to extreme heat. This tragic event should have been a wake-up call for our political leaders, a sobering signal to take the climate emergency seriously. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The Canada-Alberta MOU and the broader Carney agenda to fast-track destruction is a massive gift to Big Oil. That’s why, today, people in 40+ communities took matters into their own hands. Today, we made it clear to our Members of Parliament that it’s time for a new deal that works for people and protects our communities, our climate, and our future. ” – Atiya Jaffar, Canada Team Lead, 350.org

At a local action in Toronto–Danforth, over 60 constituents and concerned Canadians gathered at Minister of Environment and Climate Change Julie Dabrusin’s office with a giant printout of the People’s MOU – a deal to protect our communities, our climate, and our future. Speakers included Emilia Belliveau from Environmental Defence and Janelle Lapointe from the David Suzuki Foundation, who highlighted the risks, costs, and climate impacts of Alberta’s proposed bitumen pipeline and outlined practical solutions to help Canadians build a more sustainable and prosperous future. The event also featured a performance by Mir Kashif Iqbal, a Toronto-based musician whose songs reflected both the urgency of the climate crisis and hope inspired by climate action. Local organizations, including Artists for Real Climate Action (ARCA), Toronto East End Residents for Renewable Energy (TERRE), and others, also participated in the rally.

Janelle Lapointe, a climate justice and Indigenous rights organizer from Stellat’en First Nation who now lives in Toronto, said, “We cannot build national unity through weakening environmental protections, trampling Indigenous rights and asking communities to bear the immense risks of fossil fuel extraction. Indigenous people coast-to-coast-to-coast have been sustaining Nations since time immemorial. We know that nations are built through relationships, reciprocity, and responsibilities, not pipelines or corporate profiteering. Canadians deserve a future rooted in Indigenous rights, clean energy and communities that can thrive for generations.”

“We have done this before,” said Emilia, “communities have come together to fight against every major pipeline project in at least the last two decades – and shown we can win. No matter which route they propose to bulldoze a pipeline through, there will be fierce opposition from communities who will protect the places they love. And communities on the front lines won’t be alone, over 120 civil society organizations across the country have already expressed their solidarity and signed an open letter opposing this project and any new pipeline proposal.”

The coordinated actions show broad public opposition to the federal government’s recent moves to slash climate policies, gut environmental protections, and fast-track destructive fossil fuel projects. WHY NOW

Prime Minister Carney’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith caps off a year in which the federal government has handed Big Oil nearly everything on their wish list. The Canada-Alberta MOU is an agreement to build a new West Coast pipeline, which would pump dirty tar sands diluted bitumen from Alberta to the coast of BC. It was a final nail in the coffin for Canada’s climate policy, gutting industrial carbon pricing and the clean electricity regulations.

FAQs

What is the Pipeline MOU with Alberta and why should I be concerned?

In May 2026, Prime Minister Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed the Alberta/Canada MOU which we consider to be the final nail in the coffin for Canada’s climate policies.

This is an agreement to build a West Coast pipeline, a massive project that would serve as an artery to the expansion of one of the world’s largest carbon bombs: the Alberta Tar Sands. The tar sands are one of the dirtiest sources of carbon in the world and the largest source of Canada’s climate emissions. Building this pipeline would be fully incompatible with Canada’s international commitments for climate action.

In addition, the pipeline would pose huge risks to communities all along its routes including Indigenous communities that have not given their Free Prior and Informed Consent.

The MOU is not just a pipeline deal. It’s a decimation of Canadian climate policy. It rolls back the pollution cap on the oil and gas industry, weakens clean electricity rules, reduces greenwashing rules, subsidizes more oil production, and, guts the carbon pricing policy. In short, this MOU is a gift to Big Oil on a golden platter.

You can read the detailed summary by our friends at Environment Defence here.

What are the federal government’s attacks to climate and the environment?

  • Pipeline MOU: The federal government’s pipeline MOU with Alberta is a deal to build a toxic tar sands pipeline that our climate can’t afford and that will likely cost tax payers billions of dollars.
  • Gutting climate action policies: Every major climate policy that we’ve won over the last decade has been slashed in the last year including the clean electricity regulation, carbon pricing, and the pollution cap on the oil and gas industry. Plus, they built  the Major Projects Office, headed by the former CEO of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, to accelerate new fossil fuel expansion projects that would cook our climate. As the climate emergency intensifies world wide, this  is an unacceptable direction!
  • Slashing environmental protections: The Carney government has created loopholes that hand mega-corporations a free pass to ignore critical legislation in place to protect wildlife, fragile ecosystems, and our waterways. Now, if their latest plan for “getting major projects built” becomes legislation, Environmental Impact Assessments would no longer be required for new pipelines,  Federal Destruction Zones will be created  where all new development is “pre-approved,” and habitats for endangered species would be open to decimation.
  • Tax dollar money for Big Oil: LNG projects, unproven Carbon and Capture Projects, and (most likely) major pipeline projects are expected to receive billions in public funds at a time when the oil and gas industry is already robbing struggling households in broad daylight, with Canadian fossil fuel companies expected to rake in billions in excess profits from the Iran war.

Why is it important to take action right now?

Over the last year, the federal government handed Big Oil everything on their wish list. But now, they are finally feeling the heat.

In early June, people power pushed the federal government to delay their latest plan for massive regulatory cuts. And we’ve successfully created fractures  around climate and environment in Prime Minister Carney’s own caucus. It’s time to ramp up pressure the pressure.

It’s time to ramp up pressure ahead of the July 1st deadline for the West Coast Pipeline Route. That’s why, we’re mobilizing for the People’s MOU Day of Action on June 25th.

What is the process for an MP to sign the People’s MOU?

On Thursday, June 25, people across Canada will bring the People’s MOU to their MPs’ offices and ask them to sign. MPs who sign will be listed publicly on this website.

If you’re an MP and you would like to sign at any time, please email [email protected] and let us know. Email confirmation is sufficient. No digital signature is required. You can review the text of the People’s MOU here.
