Battle at the Comic Expo
Purchase options and add-ons
An obsessed fan is out for blood, and she's got Ron Lionel -- the most arrogant man working in comics today -- in her sights. She'll do anything to get her revenge, including destroying him and the largest comic book convention in the United States. Only one brave hero stands in her way: The head of comic-con security.
Who will survive the Battle at the Comic Expo? Find out, in the greatest action/adventure to ever cross through the multiverse and land in our world.
THE STORY
Ron Lionel is the hottest creator working in comic books today. His comic series, The Enduring, sells out every month and is set to become a major motion picture. Ron has no problem using his status to get what he wants, whether that be special treatment from his publisher or seducing fangirls into bed.
Joe Cotter, on the other hand, gave up his dreams of being a writer years ago, and now lives for a steady paycheck. Joe has a sense of right and wrong that was born from years of reading comics, and has long dreamed of living a more adventurous life. As the security chief for America's Finest Comic Book Expo in San Diego, he's as strong-willed as any hero with a power ring. But something in his life is missing: his purpose.
Enter Velma, an obsessed fan with some disturbing questions about The Enduring. When her righteous plan to gather answers backfires, she becomes obsessed with getting revenge against Ron Lionel. Velma sweeps the two men into a dangerous world where heroes and villains don't come from spider bites, or alien planets, or have simple backstories -- and none of them may survive the final fight.
Can the man with the mightiest ego work with the world's most immovable force to save each other and stop Velma's demented vision? Or will they end up being the catalyst that helps destroy the largest comics event in the United States?
Find out, true believer, in the epic action/adventure Battle at the Comic Expo.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"From the first page, Richard Andreoli catapults you down the rabbit hole and immerses you in the crazy world of comic conventions. But this isn't simply a sardonic examination of fans; it's a love letter to heroism and the people who believe in it most."
-- Best-selling YA Fantasy novelist C.J. Abedi, who wrote the FAE Trilogy, which was optioned by filmmaker Ridley Scott
"If you like comics and comic conventions, I think you'll love it!"
-- Phil Jimenez, comic book illustrator and writer (Wonder Woman, New X-Men, The Amazing Spider-Man)
"Battle at The Comic Expo is, firstly, just one of those ingenious ideas. So obvious. So on point. So intrinsically funny. But the execution of this novel lives up to its premise -- written by an insider, someone who knows what goes on in those cavernous convention halls filled with the stale sweat of nerds in stormtrooper outfits. Andreoli captures the absurdity and the beauty within this tribe of lost souls, and along the way manages to tell a compelling yarn. But the real pleasure of this novel is in its authenticity of place and character."
--Michael Rymer, director and producer, Battlestar Galactica, Hannibal, Picnic at Hanging Rock
"Replete with tension, action, and anxiety, Battle at the Comic Expo's injection of dark humor permeates a gripping story that excels in the unexpected while remaining firmly based in comic culture. Readers will relish its ability to teleport at warp speed between various genres while retaining a sense of originality and drama that makes the story vivid, unpredictable, and nearly impossible to put down."
--Diane Donovan, California Bookwatch Review

About the author

Raised in San Diego, California, Richard Andreoli moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA. He majored in English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He later developed his comedy writing and improv skills at The Groundlings school.
While living in San Diego, Richard volunteered for Comic-Con International: San Diego (formerly San Diego Comic-Con), the largest pop culture convention in the United States. For more than 15 years he volunteered in their registration, treasury, and events departments. Later, after becoming a professional writer and editor, he returned to the organization and launched their 48-page quarterly publication.
Richard’s professional writing career began by honing his humor and mainstream reportage for print publications such as The Advocate, Los Angeles Confidential, and CARGO Magazine. This led to the publication of his first book, Mondo Homo: Your Essential Guide to Queer Pop Culture, and appearances as a pop culture “expert” -- including on the TVLand special Inside TV Land: Tickled Pink.
With this editorial experience, Richard relaunched the content sections of Gay.com and Gay.net for Here! Media. Later, he moved to the digital marketing agency Content.ad where he and his team conceived, developed, and launched the websites First To Know, Knoworthy, and TopKit, as well as relaunched the health website SuperFoodsRx.
In the entertainment industry, Richard worked in project development with companies like MTV, HBO, and Warner Bros. before moving into screenwriting. He created bitchy dialogue and insane plotlines on the nighttime soap operas Fashion House, starring Bo Derek, Morgan Fairchild and Taylor Kinney, as well as on American Heiress, starring AnnaLynne McCord, Joe Manganiello, Robert Buckley, and Alicia Leigh Willis.
Currently, he is the Creative Director for TV4 Entertainment, the global leader in OTT streaming with more than 30 genre-focused channels.
And, in his spare time, he runs away with the circus. He currently performs at cabarets and clubs, and coaches classes at Cirque School Los Angeles.

Nostalgia come to life for this comic book nerd; fun look at a fascinating subculture
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2018My friend and I used to go to Comic Con in San Diego every year, up to about 10 years ago when it suddenly became Hollywood Con and focused more on the movies and TV than comic books. I'm always very nostalgic about the "heyday" of Comic Con so I bought this book after a recommendation from a friend who knew the writer. Sure enough, it transported me to the nerd culture that I loved and took me back to a fun, uncomplicated time when the biggest concern was making sure we had enough time to see all of the panels.
The writer has a breezy, light touch with his dialogue - this is by no means a heavy read. It's definitely a fun, summer read. A good balance between the humor and the caper that the plot revolves around. Someone referenced Douglas Adams and that's a good comparison. I would almost say that this is a much better written episode of Big Bang Theory.
If you're not a fan of comic books, that's okay. You don't have to be as the writer doesn't have esoteric references by any means. But if you are, you'll appreciate this book even more.

Very enjoyable look at the underbelly of Fandom
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2024The characters are strong and believable and their interactions make you care about them. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at ComicCon, and the thriller elements were well handled, but not quite perfect. I enjoyed the action scenes, but they weren't as strong as the earlier scenes. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book.

Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2018As a comic book fan and a pop culture connoisseur this book just hit me on many levels. It was such a fun read and I felt like I was at the convention observing everything that was going on. Mr. Andreoli has a quick wit and the book was truly enjoyable from start to finish. I am not the fastest reader but this was one that I didn't want to stop reading and wanted more once I actually finished it. Battle at the Comic Expo 2 perhaps? Every great comic book movie gets a sequel so why not a great comic book novel?

Super-strength fun!
Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2018On the surface, this book is a harrowing, action packed romp, but, like the heroes it’s characters worship, it has a secret identity. It’s really a love story dedicated to nerds and their (our) culture. Framed by that zenith of Geek-dom, the mega-sized comic book convention, the book treats its colorful, quirky cast with the dignity they deserve but might not be given in another setting (or by another writer). Punctuated with razor sharp dialogue and details so authentic that they should be accompanied by a disclaimer (“The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event. All similarities are purely coincidental.”), “Battle” is a must-read for anyone who knows a nerd, loves a nerd or proudly calls themselves one.

A Blast!
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2018This was a funny, witty, fast paced read. For anyone who knows anything about ComicCon culture, this book will make them roar. For those who know very little, Andreoli skillfully educates and entertains. His writing reminds me a bit of Douglas Adams or Christopher Moore: razor sharp and sometimes profane, but with a soft heart. Highly recommended.

Comic-Con Adventurous!
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019An easy read, draws you in at a good clip. Definitely honors and humors the comic aficionado and eccentric among us. And thoroughly captures SDCC-like backdrop for the story.

Great for comic book fans & people who want to know more about the culture
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2018Nerd culture, dashed hopes, and unexpected heroism collide in this fast-paced mystery to create a novel packed with action and a tender handling of the human psyche! Andreoli's characters converge on the biggest event in comic fandom with various hopes - seeking answers, love, revenge, second chances - and struggle to look past their differences to try and save the Expo, the fans, and themselves. By humanizing a cast of subculture characters the world often overlooks, this tale highlights the power of imagination and the recognition that a backstory lives in us all.

Mean spirited and negative.
Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2020Mean spirited book. Spends too much time being negative toward fans, the convention going crowd, creators and the industry itself. Constantly playing into negative fannish stereotypes. The main characters were just not likeable people.
