Muscle for Life: Get Lean, Strong, and Healthy at Any Age!
Purchase options and add-ons
Is this a workout book that can make you look and feel like you’re twenty again in thirty days flat?
No.
Is it a fitness book full of diet and exercise “hacks” and “shortcuts” for gaining lean muscle and melting belly fat faster than a sneeze in a cyclone?
Absolutely not.
But is it an exercise book (and nutrition book) that’ll guide you on how to eat and exercise to lose pounds of fat and gain eye-catching amounts of muscle definition and strength?
Yes.
And faster than you probably think possible, no matter your age or abilities.
Because here’s the deal:
Muscle building and fat loss after forty aren’t nearly as complicated as you’ve been led to believe.
-You don’t need to: Obsess over “clean eating” and avoiding “bad” or “unhealthy” foods like sugar, meat, and bread. Some foods are just more nutritious than and should be eaten more frequently than others. That’s it.
-You don’t need to: Spend a couple of hours in the gym every day grinding through punishing strength training workouts. Sweating buckets, getting really sore, training until bone-tired…all wholly overrated for gaining lean muscle and strength.
-You don’t need to: Slog away on the treadmill. In fact, you don’t need to do any cardio exercise at all to shed ugly belly, hip, and thigh fat and even build your best body ever.
Those are just a few of myths that keep people over forty from ever achieving the lean, toned, and strong body they truly desire.
And Muscle for Life will teach you something that most of those men and women will never know:
How to transform your body while eating all the foods you like and doing just a few challenging (but not grueling) strength training workouts per week. Oh, and cardio exercise? Completely optional.
Here are just a few of the things you’ll discover inside this fitness book for men and women over forty:
-The biggest fitness myths and mistakes that keep people weak, overweight, and confused. For example, “calories are all that matters,” “carbs and sugars make you fat and unhealthy,” and “strength training makes women bulky.”
-The primary driver of muscle growth that forces your muscles to get fitter and stronger. And no, it has nothing to do with “muscle confusion,” “functional training,” or any other pseudoscientific fitness nonsense.
-How to create meal plans for losing fat and building muscle with all the foods you love so you never feel starved, deprived, or like you’re “on a diet” (and especially a “bodybuilding diet”).
-Twelve months of paint-by-numbers resistance training workouts for adding lean muscle definition to all of the right places on your body…in only 3-to-5 hours of strength training per week.
And that’s not all, either…
-360 peer-reviewed scientific studies support the Muscle for Life system of eating, exercising, and recovering for losing fat and gaining muscle and strength.
So, here’s the bottom line:
You can get a fit, lean, and strong body no matter your age or circumstances, and you can do it without following a bland diet and without living in the gym doing exhausting workouts you hate. And this book helps show you how.

From the Author
Q: How does Muscle for Life differ from Mike's other books?
A: There are millions of guys and gals in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond who are overweight, out of shape, and deeply unhappy with how they look and feel, and who don't know what to do about it.
Many of these people have tried and abandoned many diet and exercise programs and swallowed pills, powders, and potions galore, and now, they're afraid that nothing will work for them—that they'll never get the fit, lean, and strong body they really want.
Tens of thousands of these guys and gals have found their way to my books Bigger Leaner Stronger and Thinner Leaner Stronger, and while those books can work fantastically for people of all ages and circumstances, they're more suited to younger, injury-free folk who want to eat and train like lifestyle bodybuilders.
What about everyone else, though?
What about the gym-shy 45-year-old who's never lifted a weight in her life but still wants to improve her body composition, health, and longevity?
What about the 35-year-old with a lot of weight to lose who isn't ready to start squatting, bench pressing, and deadlifting heavy loads?
What about the 65-year-old who needs a gentler and joint-friendlier way to get fitter, leaner, and stronger?
Muscle for Life was tailor-made for these people and the many others like them—an a-to-izzard guide to gaining muscle and strength, losing fat, and getting healthy, at any age, regardless of where they've been and where they are.
Q: Is the Muscle for Life program right for me or should I follow Bigger Leaner Stronger or Thinner Leaner Stronger?
A: Put simply, Muscle for Life is a smooth and gradual onramp to my Bigger Leaner Stronger and Thinner Leaner Stronger programs.
Therefore, Muscle for Life will work best for you if . . .
- You're in your 40s or 50s or older and are new or relatively new to strength training.
- You have a lot of weight to lose (25% of body weight or more) and are new or relatively new to strength training.
- You want to start doing strength training but don't feel ready for heavy barbell training.
- You're fit and want to brush up on the fundamentals and find simple ways to improve your diet and training regimens.
Q: Should I read Muscle for Life if I've read Bigger Leaner Stronger or Thinner Leaner Stronger?
A: It certainly can't hurt.
There's plenty in Muscle for Life for readers of Bigger Leaner Stronger and Thinner Leaner Stronger to like, love, and rub all over themselves, including . . .
- New details on anti-aging strategies that actually work (according to science)
- New thoughts, tools, and tactics for winning in the "inner game" of getting fit
- New meal planning methods that allow you to control your calories and macros without a scale and measuring utensils
- New training programs for men and women that form the perfect stepping stones into the Bigger Leaner Stronger and Thinner Leaner Stronger programs
- New supplementation protocols specifically for golden agers
- New premade cutting and lean gaining meal plans for men and women
That said, if you're an advanced weightlifter who has mastered the fundamentals and is looking for new and interesting ways to eat and train, Muscle for Life isn't for you. Beyond Bigger Leaner Stronger will suit you better.
Q: I can't find time to exercise but I want to get in shape. What should I do?
A: I don't know anybody who can find time to exercise. I've never had anyone tell me, "Mike, I have too much free time these days. I think I'll spend a few hours in the gym every day to get in shape. What should I do while I'm there?"
It's always the opposite. Most of us lead busy, hectic lives and feel we don't have time for anything new. But in almost all cases, that just isn't true. As much as some people would like to think they're too busy to exercise, when they analyze in detail how they actually spend their every waking minute every day, they discover how it could be worked out (no pun intended). And especially when they realize how little time it really takes to get fit!
The reality is people who have successfully transformed their bodies have the same 24 hours in a day as you and the rest of us, and they still have lives to live. They still have to go work, spend time with their loved ones, maintain some semblance of a social life, and remember to decompress and have some fun now and then. The only difference is they've decided exercise is important enough to be in the plan.
For some, that means watching less TV or giving it up altogether. For others, it means waking up an hour earlier than normal a few days per week to get into the gym. For others still it means asking the wife to take the kids after dinner (a favor that can be repaid for her workouts!).
My point is: if you really want to carve out an hour a few days per week to train, I'm positive you can.
Q: I'm new to weightlifting. Is this for me?
A: Absolutely. With Muscle for Life, you can gain up to 25 pounds of lean muscle in just your first year while also dropping just as much (or more!) unwanted fat.
Moreover, you're also going to experience firsthand things most people will never know about effective diet and training, including how to perform key exercises with perfect form, ensure you keep progressing in your workouts, break through fat loss and muscle gain plateaus, prevent injuries, and much more.
The bottom line is by the end of your first year of Muscle for Life, you're not only going to be thrilled with the results, but even more so with what you're going to be able to accomplish in the following year, two, three, and beyond.
Q: I'm in my 40s/50s-plus. Can I do this program?
A: Definitely. In fact, it was created specifically for you.
Every week I get emailed by at least a few people asking if it's too late to build muscle and get fit. Most are very pleasantly surprised when I explain that it's definitely not too late, and that I'm regularly working with guys and gals in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s who are building their best body ever.
How should people in their 40s and beyond go about building a great body, though? Certainly they can't eat and train like the 20-year-olds, right? You might be surprised to learn that not nearly as much changes as people think.
Studies show that middle-aged men and women can gain just as much muscle and lose just as much fast as their college-aged counterparts, and that by improving your body composition, you can also improve your metabolism and hormones.
That said, fitness does get a little harder as you get older because as we age, our muscles recover slower from training and our tendons and ligaments also become stiffer and less resilient, which can increase the risk of injury.
Overall, though, the science is clear: you can stay in remarkably good shape well into your golden years if you stay active and follow the principles taught in Muscle for Life.
Q: How long does it take to see results?
A: One of the best things about Muscle for Life is how quickly it works.
You'll see marked improvements in the gym and mirror within your first month, and it'll only get better and better from there.
Q: I'm short on time. Can I still do the program?
A: Absolutely.
Muscle for Life entails just three one-hour strength training workouts per week and cardio is optional. So, if you can invest a few hours per week in your long-term fitness, you can build the body you've always wanted.
Q: I follow a special type of diet (vegan, vegetarian, Paleo, food sensitivity/allergy, etc.). Can I still do the program?
A: Yup.
The diet principles are very flexible and can accommodate any and all food preferences and limitations.

If you read any health and fitness book in 2022 (or beyond), it should be this one.
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2022If you've become cynical and bitter about pretty much any book in the lose weight/get healthy genre, or if you're just getting into healthy eating and exercising and aren't sure where to start, then you need to read this book.
Here's what sets this book apart:
1. Everything is clearly explained and backed up by scientific research. There's no suspension of disbelief or faith required. It's just a logical, simple system that's been proven to work.
2. The diet is simple, practical, and effective. Unlike most diets, which require you to cut certain foods or food groups, take particular supplements, only eat at certain times, and so forth, you're free to eat what and when you like, so long as you eat the appropriate number of calories and macros (carbs, protein, and fat). The book also walks you through exactly how to build a meal plan of healthy foods that you enjoy, and teaches you how to measure portions properly WITHOUT a scale or measuring cups.
3. The exercise plan is easy to understand, easy on your joints, and actually enjoyable. You only need to do three workouts per week, with each workout taking around ~40 to 50 minutes. The author also provides three different workout routines for beginners, intermediates, and advanced gymgoers, and separate plans for men and women. This makes the program much more fun and keeps it challenging and engaging (you always have a new goal to strive toward).
Finally, the author also has a proven track record of helping people lose weight, build muscle, and get healthy, and he walks the walk. I have trouble taking any health and fitness advice from people who clearly can't keep their own body healthy and fit, which is one of the reasons Mike's advice really resonates with me. Buy the book, implement what it has to say, and decide for yourself what you think, but if you read any health and fitness book in 2022, it should be this one.

Mike is an amazing guy
Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2023I recently read "Muscle for Life" by Mike Matthews and found it to be an incredibly helpful and informative guide to building muscle and achieving a fit, healthy body. The book is well-written and easy to understand, and it is filled with practical advice and tips that anyone can follow.
One of the things I appreciate most about this book is that it is based on sound scientific principles and research, but it is also written in a way that is accessible to anyone, regardless of their level of fitness or experience. The author provides clear explanations of the various exercises and techniques he recommends, and he also includes detailed workout plans and nutrition guidelines that are easy to follow.
I also appreciate that the book is not just about building muscle, but also about overall health and wellness. The author covers topics such as stress management, sleep, and recovery, which are all important for achieving and maintaining a healthy body.
Overall, I highly recommend "Muscle for Life" to anyone who is looking to build muscle, improve their fitness, or simply learn more about how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It is a great resource that is both informative and practical

Sound guidance
Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2026Muscle for Life inspired me to start on the flexible diet to help me cut body fat by giving me very practical guidelines and the rationale for doing so. Mike cuts dispels misinformation and shares facts backed up by research studies. I am only in week one of the diet, but I'm optimistic that I'll reach my goal of cutting body fat from 25% to 15%.

Best book out there for getting in shape
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2022I've been a fan of Mike Matthews since I encountered his social media presence and his Bigger Leaner Stronger about four years ago. I was mid 40s then, needed to get in shape, and Mike made the difference. The thing I love about him is that there's no BS, no fads, no gimmicks, just science and common sense. Mike is real, and sincere (he has a disclaimer on his supplement store page at legionathletics.com saying you don't actually need supplements--who does that)?
Matthews makes it simple: Here's how you need to eat (total calories as well as macros like protein fats carbs) depending on your goals (fat loss, muscle gain, both), here's how you need to train (weights with some versions of cardio, depending). I knew how to lift and lift hard from my time as an athlete (football and hockey) long ago, but no one ever explained to me the basic knowledge of diet--and its supremacy for health. Once I got that from him, it was on to the mental game. Here too Matthews is great: no hype, just wisdom to help you become who you want to be.
There's some things in this book (Muscle for Life) that are in his prior books. We'd expect that, because the science hasn't changed much in the several years since he wrote Bigger Leaner Stronger several years ago, and because he's trying, I think, to address a wider audience with this one. But there's a lot in here that's new, and especially helpful for us middle-aged folk who'll never grace the stage of a bodybuilding competition but who want longer, healthier, happier lives of vitality.
The proof is in the pudding: following Matthews' principles, I went from 320 to 226 over the course of ~15 months, nearly 100 pounds, while gaining strength and seeing my bloodwork improve from borderline dangerous to normal/healthy. I'm back up a bit now (thanks COVID and my darling children!), but I'll go into a cut again and keep pressing down to my goal weight.
Bottom line: If you need to get in shape, this is the first, and maybe only, book you need. Pairs well with Matthews' Shredded Chef and Little Black Book of Workout Motivation.

A great book for new weighlifters, but not if you have already read Bigger Leaner Stronger
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022I've read Bigger Leaner Stronger (BLS) and Beyond Bigger Leaner Stronger (BBLS), both of which are written by Michael Matthews.
This book is for people who are completely new to weightlifting and a macronutrient-based diet, but it presents the same information found in BLS. What makes it for new weightlifters the difficulty of the exercises in the workout plans, the amount of workouts per week, and the tone of the writing.
Michael's writing quality has improved with each of his books. I find his writing easy-to-read and to-the-point. If you are serious about a lifestyle change but have never weightlifted before and are nervous about getting injured, this book is for you!
If you have already read BLS, you won't find much new information in this book. If you are looking for new information, I recommend BBLS.
Overall, I think this is another good book from Micheal Matthews, but if you are already familiar with Bigger Leaner Stronger or Thinner Leaner Stronger you probably do not need Muscle for Life.

Motivation, plain and simple
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025Mike's writing style and approach to the material in this book are both spot on for a guy like me. I've gone through dozens of "programs" and books about the best way to do everything from exercise execution to meal planning, but the simple way that he lays out the information and the building block style he uses to build on concepts is exactly what I needed. I have already made changes based on what I've read and can see a long, productive way forward for me using the information he shares in the book. Highly recommend!
