SHORTLISTED FOR THE WATERSTONES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023
SHORTLISTED FOR THE FOYLES NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day and then ages out. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable.
Over the years, as he has thought deeply about where creativity comes from and where it doesn't, he has learned that being an artist isn't about your specific output; it's about your relationship to the world. Creativity has a place in everyone's life, and everyone can make that place larger. In fact, there are few more important responsibilities.
The Creative Act is a beautiful and generous course of study that illuminates the path of the artist as a road we all can follow. It distils the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime's work into a luminous reading experience that puts the power to create moments - and lifetimes - of exhilaration and transcendence within closer reach for all of us.

Un libro para leer con pausa
Reviewed in Spain on 13 February 2026Muy bueno y amable. Motivante.

Inspiring
Reviewed in Spain on 18 February 2025A Brilliant book. I bought one for myself and another for a gift. I shall probably gift more. It is clear, no fuss no excess of words and speaks so wonderfully about the creative process. No one one should be without it. Relevant to all walks of the creative life.

Estelar.

G. J. Cooke Esq5 out of 5 starsDestined to be a classic on creativity
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 April 2023I first saw this book as a post on LinkedIn, shared by a famous designer, who worked with Rick Rubin on the design of the book. As a designer it caught my attention and I was intrigued after recently listening to Rick Rubin on Desert Island Discs. I bought the book and also downloaded it on Audible.
A lot of the content resonates and it’s been an inspirational experience. Very easy to read and understand, and so many gems that now I’ve finished it I’m going to read it all over again, and again to make sure it sticks.

Pankaj Ahuja5 out of 5 starsStraight from the Heavens
Reviewed in India on 18 June 2026This book feels like it arrived straight from the heavens—a message, a meditation, and a guide wrapped in a beautifully crafted object.
Rick Rubin reminds us that creativity is not reserved for a chosen few. This book is for musicians, painters, designers, architects, photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, chefs, gardeners, farmers, collectors, actors, singers, filmmakers, writers, florists, astronomers, astrologers, astronauts, doctors, scientists, engineers, builders—and anyone else who creates something each day with their hands, their minds, or their imagination.
The Creative Act is not simply a book about making art. It is a book about seeing, noticing, listening, and living more creatively. Whether your canvas is a recording studio, a kitchen, a laboratory, a construction site, or a blank page, you’ll find wisdom here that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
A rare book and beautiful book.
