Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:
I was never a winner at many things when I was a kid, but one thing I was completely brilliant at, was hide and seek. Being small of stature, I could squeeze myself into tiny places and remain surprisingly quiet for a very long time. The staying quiet thing hasn’t been carried over into adulthood but the love for small spaces has. We have a brilliant coat cupboard at our house and it isn’t just used for coats. This tiny space is my sanctuary.
On the day we moved into the house, a little bit overwhelmed with it all, I sat in there for almost an entire day until I was ready to face the mess again. I’ve hidden in it when the teenager’s parties have got a bit lairy, taken a moment of reflection during chaotic Christmases and what with things being the way they are just now, I’ve found myself taking a moment in the cupboard and having just a little bit of a blub.
And the coats are handy because there’s usually a tissue to be found in a least one of the pockets, and if I’m lucky it’s even clean. The stories of faith are full of folk taking a minute out to catch their breath and gain perspective. Moses and his mountain top, Jesus in a garden just hours before his death and countless saints who found solace in solitude. And while my downstairs coat cupboard is no mountain top or peaceful paradise, it’s like a sort of chapel. Giving me a safe space to stop and think.
Other people might have the luxury of a whole room for prayer, while others a windowsill with space for a candle. Whatever the space is, large or small, having somewhere to take time out and reset is as important now as it ever was. The coat cupboard is more than just the cupboard for coats and a soul sanctuary though, it also doubles up as the perfect sound recording booth. In fact Dermot, I’m talking to you from it right now and the good news is I’ve just had a ferret in my cagoule pocket and found a packet of sherbet lemons. They’re its favourite.  I think I might just stay in here for a little bit longer. You know where I am if you want me.
