Girls into Coding(GIC)  is a not-for-profit organisation, a Community Interest Company (CIC). We are a mother(Helene) and daughter(Avye, 16) run social enterprise. GIC provides learning opportunities for girls between the ages of 10 and 14. We’ve created workshops and education events to immerse young people in a range of STEM activities. STEM is an educational programme developed to prepare young students for further education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM also aims to encourage inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills.We are driven to create opportunities to engage girls to consider STEM education and careers through hands-on workshops and events.

COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!We are delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON &quot;Girls Into Coding &quot; themed-event on RENEWABLE ENERGY! It&#x27;s FREE for girls aged 10 to 14. There will also be lightning talks to inspire &amp; encourage the girls to get further involved in tech. - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY - WE WILL HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF SPACE FOR THIS EVENT. TICKETS ARE LIMITED TO ONE PER FAMILY.IF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.THE WORKSHOP: Build &amp; Power your Own HouseBuild a renewable energy generator! Make a wind turbine and solar energy generator. Write code to feed power to the &quot;grid&quot; and watch as it powers our houses. But can you generate enough energy to keep up with demand? Try different designs for the generators and explore ways to optimise your energy generation. Compete with other participants to see who can generate the most!!  The girls will work in pairsLIGHTNING TALKS: Erica Purvis - Exploring the Nature of EnergyErica is a sustainability and circular product and business design engineer, working freelance as Studio Technical Nature. She blends her technical background (having worked in the consumer electronics industry) with a love of nature and a passion for positive impact. She consults, coaches, and mentors start-ups, businesses, and several climate-related accelerators, incubators, and university programmes around the world. Erica has also published various papers, articles, and frameworks on sustainable and circular design. Alongside this, she is the co-founder of Design Nature CIC, a social enterprise that empowers young people in design and creativity for each other and a sustainable planet, as well as the OSCEdays, to explore the role of Open Source for a Circular Economy.Erica is also active in the community, a former director of Reading Hydro CBS and now education lead and the Circular Economy Club Reading.Julia Gubar &amp; Margot Smith - Pocket money with a purpose: how we can make the world a greener placeJulia GubarSenior Manager, Octopus Energy GenerationJulia works as a Senior Manager at Octopus Energy Generation, a fund management company with a mission to accelerate to net zero through its green energy investments.She is investing into the early stage of renewable energy projects – when they secure land, grid connection, and planning permits in order to start construction. It is the riskiest and longest stage of a solar or wind project life. Julia and her team work with various renewable technologies: solar, storage, onshore and offshore wind.Her mission is to bring as much as possible renewable and accessible energy to European countries and reduce their dependency on fossil fuels.Julia has more than 14 years of experience in the investments sector, including 9 years of investing into the renewable energy. She worked on projects in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Cyprus, Italy, and other countries in Europe.Margot SmithPortfolio Associate (ESG &amp; Impact)Margot works as an “ESG and Impact Portfolio Associate” at Octopus Energy Generation, a fund management company with a mission to accelerate to net zero through its green energy investments.Margot’s interest in the Sustainable Finance sector grew at university, where she studied Biological Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Specialising in conservation science and applied ecology in her final year, she was able to fully understand the scale and impacts of the climate crisis. Margot continues to apply her passion for the planet through her work at Octopus. Her role focuses on integrating “Environmental, Social, and Governance” issues, and opportunities in all business decisions. By doing so, Margot’s team helps make Octopus Energy Generation a responsible investor – one that contributes to climate change mitigation without costing the people or the planet.There will be a 15 min break (please bring a snack). TERMS OF PARTICIPATION:Tickets are limited to 1 maximum per family // Please register the participant only, parents do not need to register.Girls must be between 10 and 14 years old.If you book a place but are unable to attend, please inform us as soon as possible so we can reallocate the place to someone on our waiting list.COVID MEASURES:We have put in place a range of Covid safety measures to ensure participants have the most enjoyable - and safe - experience possible with us.The safety and comfort of all our attendees and accompanying parent are our top priority. Here are a few measures we have in place to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.We encouraged you to wear a face mask when moving around the venue if you wish to do so.We ask that staff and attendees make use of the sanitising stations provided around the venue.There is no longer a legal requirement for people with Covid-19 to self-isolate. However, if you have any of the main symptoms of Covid-19 (a new and continuous cough, a high temperature, a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell) you are advised to take a test. The public health advice is still to stay at home and avoid contact with other people whilst you are awaiting results.We will continue to monitor the situation, including any Government Guidelines and regulations, and adapt and update where needed to ensure we provide a safe event.
