"Current evidence shows that agroecology generates multiple environmental, social, economic, and nutritional benefits. However, major gaps persist in understanding and comparing its multidimensional performance across contexts." Building on the foundations laid by the HLPE report "Agroecological and other innovative approaches for sustainable agriculture and food systems that enhance food security and nutrition", an international group of experts from leading research institutions, including Cecilia Elizondo, member of the Steering Committee of the HLPE-FSN, has developed a new paper exploring how scientific understanding of agroecology has evolved in recent years. The paper reviews what we now know about agroecology's multidimensional performance and identifies research priorities to support future transitions. 📄 Read the full paper below. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gBtr9npV

We are pleased to contribute to this important discussion through Evan Fraser, Member of the HLPE-FSN Steering Committee, who will present key messages from the HLPE-FSN background note Harnessing Artificial Intelligence, Digitalization and Data Governance for Food Security and Nutrition. As AI transforms agrifood systems, fundamental questions arise about how its benefits can be realized while its risks are effectively managed. The discussion will explore the coincidence of data deserts and food insecurity hotspots, the imbalance between projected investments in AI and the resources needed to end hunger, and what these realities mean for the governance of AI in food security and nutrition. Real progress will come from matching the right tools to the right challenges, recognizing data governance as a cornerstone of responsible innovation, and measuring what truly matters: stronger food security and nutrition outcomes. 📅 Join us on 30 June for this important conversation on the future of AI, digitalization and data governance in agrifood systems. https://lnkd.in/gRCwJtgH

As fuel and food prices spike and famine and food security continue to grow globally, effective multilateral spaces for dialogue and decision-making matter more than ever. That was reinforced for me during a recent retreat of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The CFS occupies a unique place in the global food systems landscape. As the foremost international and intergovernmental platform focused on food security and nutrition, it brings together governments, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, the private sector, philanthropy, researchers, and UN agencies to address some of the most pressing challenges facing food systems today. In a world where trust in multilateral institutions is often under strain, the CFS continues to demonstrate the value of inclusive governance. A few reflections from the retreat: 🗣️ CFS products are grounded in evidence through the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE), helping ensure policy is science-informed. 🌎 The Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples CSIPM Mechanism of the UN Committee on WorldFoodSecurity plays a critical role in bringing forward the perspectives and lived experiences of communities most impacted by food systems failures. ⚖️ In a moment of growing fragmentation, the CFS demonstrates what is possible when evidence, participation, and dialogue are brought together in global governance. The retreat left me reflecting on the importance of institutions that can hold complexity—spaces where diverse actors can work through competing priorities while remaining focused on a shared goal: advancing food security, nutrition, and the right to food for all. The CFS is more than another international forum. It is foundational infrastructure for global food governance, and its role will only become more important as countries navigate increasingly interconnected food systems challenges. My thanks to CFS Chair, Professor Anas Al-Nabulsi and Vice-Chair Jhenifer Mojica Florez and HLPE Chair Sayed Azam-Ali, OBE for their leadership and commitment to strengthening these essential platforms. #FoodSecurity #CFS #HLPE #CSIPM #FoodSystems #Multilateralism #FoodGovernance https://www.fao.org/cfs/en
