Mirror Thinking: How Role Models Make Us Human (Bloomsbury Sigma)
Purchase options and add-ons
Parents, friends, teachers, relatives, and even work colleagues - from the people close to us to those we never even meet - other people are constantly shaping who we are.
The mirror neuron is a part of the brain that has shaped each and every one of us throughout our lifetimes. It is the very essence of what makes us human, but most of us have never even heard of it.
Mirror Thinking explores how the mirror neuron has defined us through the role models we observe and interact with. All of the learning we take from our world is down to our brain's mirror system, but it doesn't stop there. This incredible system is also responsible for our emotional connections with others, how we pass on learning between the generations through stories, and how we imagine and innovate within our own minds.
In Mirror Thinking, psychologist and award-winning author Fiona Murden looks at the mirrors that have shaped our lives. By having a better understanding of this system we are able to take conscious control of it, encouraging us to have a more positive impact on the world around us and on society as a whole.

Product description
Review
A very compelling and fascinating read. Fiona's insights are incredibly useful both from a personal and professional standpoint, but also in the wider context of societal norms and our biases. -- Brenda Trenowden CBE, Global Chair of the 30% Club
Mirror Thinking, Fiona Murden's investigation into role models and how we are influenced by others, takes a fresh look into our socially-networked world. She writes with panache and authority, and lightens the subject with her own personal touch. Mirror Thinking holds a mirror up to our behaviour, our world, and how we can change things for the better; it is solidly researched, engagingly presented and packed with fascinating insights. -- Sir Dermot Turing, author of Prof: Alan Turing Decoded, trustee of the Turing Trust and the Bletchley Park Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College, Oxford.
An insightful and thought-provoking read, providing a different lens to understanding ourselves and others through the mirror system. This is a highly recommended read for anyone who is keen to reflect and consciously try to improve themselves and their interactions with others, but also help shape a better world. -- Maria Fasli, UNESCO Chair in Analytics and Data Science, Director of Institute for Analytics and Data Science, University of Essex
Mirror thinking is something we all do and Fiona provides insight on how this influences not just our life but those around us. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection. -- David Smith, Nike Athlete, two time World Champion and London 2012 gold medalist

About the author

Fiona Murden is as a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, author and stimulating public speaker. Fiona has worked with the elite: high performers from across industries, sport, business and politics for the last 18 years, helping them to achieve optimal performance. She profiles senior leaders in the UK, USA, Europe and Asia Pacific to assess their fit, strengths and the risks in relation to the role that they are being hired for. She also acts as coach and advisor to executive boards across a broad range of industries.
In her award winning first book, Defining You, Fiona aims to begin to democratise the process of behavioural support that psychologists offer to the more extreme edges of society making it accessible for people in their daily lives helping people to better understand themselves and others. The outcome being improved physical and mental health, happiness and a more optimised level of potential.
Her second book Mirror Thinking, Fiona uses her experience and insight as a psychologist to empower us to leverage the mirror system to our advantage. Fiona unpacks the psychological principles behind the system in a real and relatable way. Readers are given the skills to consciously harness this knowledge and take more control over this incredible system. She also explores the broader societal implications of the system, including the influence of social media and celebrities, and considers the impact it is having on the younger population of today. Finally, Fiona looks at what it takes to be a great role model to others. If people are mirroring you, what are the things you’d prefer others not to repeat? And what do you want to see played back to you in someone else’s behaviour?
In addition to her writing, speaking and running the company she established in 2007, Aroka Ltd, Fiona is founder of the charity Dot-to-Dot - ‘joining the dots on human behaviour’. She is passionate about increasing understanding of how our minds work, to empower all of us to reach our true potential and to ultimately enable a positive and significant impact on global issues such as obesity, terrorism and mental health.
Fiona has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Warwick University, a Master of Arts in Organisational Studies from Warwick University Business School and a Master of Science in Psychology, gained with distinction, from The University of London. She started her career at Andersen Consulting (Accenture).

Wonderful mix of science and stories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2020I was interested by this after reading Fiona's first book - this is a very different read, full of story telling and bringing to life the science of how we become who we are which were the parts of the first book I enjoyed most. What I really found fascinating was the things we take for granted and what is really going on. Also, it has made me think about how I use this information in real life - I've only just finished it, but still I've started to think about why I've emulated people, who I should perhaps look to in work and in my personal life and also how I present myself.
I think even if you're not up for some reflection this is simply a great read that puts some science behind something we take for granted - but if like me you're thinking about things more deeply that it may help you make some really important decisions, whilst learning a load of new stuff too... also, loved all the stories that brought things to life!

What a brilliant and socially valuable read.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2020What a brilliant and socially valuable read.
This book pulls off the rare feat of presenting complex theories and making them feel relatable and easy to understand.
Navigating through some really important topics such as echo chambers and the harm of unbalanced content consumed online. Mirror Thinking makes topics and behaviours that are so nuanced and hard to recognise in ourselves easy to acknowledge and identify.
Told in a way that’s easy to digest using real and relatable stories to demonstrate real world examples and application. Backed by just the right amount of substantiated research without it feeling overly academic.
The fact i read this in only 3 sittings and was super engaged throughout says a lot.
Not only did it teach me a lot but it gave me ample fodder to open up really valuable (and necessary) conversations with both of my children.

One for the curious ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 August 2020I loved Fiona's first book, Defining You, so I bought Mirror Thinking without really knowing much about the Mirror Neuron or what to expect. About half way in so far and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It's well written, insightful and has got me thinking about so many things that never occurred to me before, about my own behaviour and that of others. I love the stories and examples throughout to bring it to life. If you're interested in psychology, how people work and why we do the things we do then this is a great book to devour.

A fascinating & insightful truth about influence!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2020Absolutely LOVED this book. I couldn’t read without stopping and having to turn over pages, highlight sentences and talk to anyone who happened to be in the room about it! It’s eye opening and it makes you take a long hard look at who you are and what kind of role model you would like to be as well as highlighting the influence others have had on our behaviour through mirroring. A fascinating and insightful read.

Great resource in applying theory into practice in this valuable area
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2021Coming to this as a psychologist I’d say, although I know some of the theories and applications written about in Mirror Thinking, it pulls them together in a unique way helping the reader see how they apply to real life and to society more broadly, what you can do to improve your own learning and how we could leverage this knowledge to help issues faced across the world.
A fantastic read and very well written. i would highly recommend.

Curious5 out of 5 starsTerrific Read!
Reviewed in the United States on 4 June 2021A great contribution to the growing body of knowledge about human behavior. This insightful book is well researched and provides practical advice about how to harness the power of intentional role modeling. I particularly like the framework that differentiates among the three types -- personal, situational and aspirational role modeling. Very helpful for taking action.
