Backrooms

As someone who isn't usually a fan of horror, I absolutely loved this film. Tense, mind-bending, and brilliantly constructed, Backrooms is expertly directed and performed to create a unique experience. I love that they went for a character-driven exploration of mental breakdown, rather than a lore-heavy dump of the Backrooms mythos. Even though I had an understanding of the online series, I didn't think it was necessary to enjoy and understand this film. Definitely worth a watch.

It was fun! Obviously, not the most thought-provoking social commentary or deep exploration of the lore, just good, decent fun that kids, and kids-at-heart will enjoy. Lots of action sequences fill out a fairly basic, easy-to-follow story. The VFX seems a bit lacking in places, but overall, it was visually impressive. Could afford to be about 10-15 shorter, as it does feel like it drags in a couple of places. But in the end, worth a watch.

I watched this film expecting it to be your typical C-grade sci-fi, but instead found a thoughtful, well-performed exploration of hopelessness. A lot of films like this will sacrifice getting good actors for the special effects. This film has, fortunately, done the opposite. Casting actors with some weight has allowed them to carry a melancholy to the emotional places it needed to go, even if it means the effects are pretty crap in places. Definitely worth a watch, though be aware that it isn't a horror, or a feel-good romp.

So, weirdly enough, I enjoyed this film a lot more than the first one. I thought it actually had some interesting things to say about the changes to media, and how a new generation of tech-focused owners are casting away journalism for clicks. The performances were good, I especially preferred Meryl Streep's subtler rendition of Miranda in this film versus the first incarnation.
