The story of Charles Daniels is a powerful reminder that the fight for civil rights has deep roots here in Calgary.
On February 3, 1914, Charles Daniels - a Black Calgarian and CPR employee - arrived at the Sherman Grand Theatre (now The GRAND) with orchestra-level seats he had purchased for a performance of King Lear. Theatre management blocked his entry and insisted he accept seats in the segregated balcony. Daniels refused and was turned away.

When the British wartime thriller "49th Parallel" arrived at The GRAND in early 1942, it wasn’t just another film screening, it became one of the theatre’s defining cinematic moments. Featuring internationally recognized stars like Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, and Canadian actor Raymond Massey, the film already carried major excitement for Calgary audiences, many of whom had recently seen these actors on The GRAND’s screen in classics like "Wuthering Heights", "Pride and Prejudice", and "Gone with the Wind".
