This month, we’re celebrating two milestones that strengthen our mission of building vibrant, inclusive communities.

We have been awarded two highly competitive 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) allocations from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. These critical resources will bring 51 affordable apartment homes to The Canopy in Cary and 53 affordable homes for seniors at Maddry Meadows in Chapel Hill. Together, these projects represent more than $13 million in new investment to expand access to housing across our region. Click to learn more.

We’re also honored to share that we received the Customer History Award at Community Housing Capital’s 25th anniversary celebration during the NeighborWorks Training Institute. This recognition reflects our long-standing partnership and shared commitment to advancing housing opportunities that last for generations.

New Insights to Support Families

The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University recently released The State of the Nation’s Housing 2025 report, highlighting record-breaking challenges across the U.S. housing market - many of which mirror trends in North Carolina.

Image

Nationally, the average monthly housing payment for a median-priced home rose to $3,270 in 2024, up $1,225 in just three years. In North Carolina, buyers in markets like Asheville and Wilmington now need incomes of $134K–$142K annually to afford a median-priced home.

Nearly half (46.3%) of renter households in North Carolina are cost burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing. Of these, nearly one in four households are severely cost burdened, spending over half their income on rent.

As housing costs outpace incomes, reports like this emphasize the vital role of affordable housing development and policy in stabilizing families and communities across our state. At DHIC, we are actively working to meet this need by creating and preserving affordable homes for seniors, families, and individuals throughout the Triangle.

With your support, we can expand this impact, helping more North Carolinians access the safe, stable, affordable housing they deserve.
