Xiamen Sports Center

EZPro chooses EAW KF and QX for the largest single gymnasium in China

The Xiamen Olympic Sports Center, located in the New City area of the Xiang’an District, was built to host large-scale international sports events. The design standards not only had to comply with Chinese national standards, but also meet international standards, such as FIFA, FIBA and other technical requirements.

SUMMARY

The Egret Stadium has an inverted U shape, with tall stands in the east and west sides and low stands in the north and south. The height of the steel structure exceeds 85 meters, and the maximum span of the structure is 350 meters. The stadium can accommodate 60,592 people as a football stadium. When switching to athletic mode, the platform is lowered to the field and the stands move back to make room for the tracks. This format can accommodate more than 53,443 people. So far, the Egret Stadium has successfully hosted the 2023 World Athletics Diamond League Xiamen Meeting and the group stage of the Asian zone of the women’s football qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympics.

The Phoenix Gymnasium, with a floor area of 155,000 square meters and capacity of 18,000 seats, is one of the largest single gyms in China. The gym has successfully hosted the CBA All-Star game.

CHALLENGE

Speech intelligibility was the primary concern for the Egret Stadium, which was a large challenge because the spacious venue caused a long reverberation time. Another challenge was the high humidity and sea salt spray environment that would require extremely durable equipment. The final concern was that the height of each hanging point was not the same and the loudspeaker groups could only be installed under the curved catwalk. Therefore, each group of loudspeakers needed to be accurately calculated and customized with different fly bars.

Challenges for the Phoenix Gymnasium included sound quality and quick turnaround time. CBA basketball games and other events usually have DJs playing music to add to the fun, which required higher sound quality and large dynamic reproduction. The construction period was tight. Turning the drawings into a high-quality sound system ready for use needed to be done in two months.

THE SOLUTION

For the stadium, high performance EAW KF210 2-way line array and QX Series full-range loudspeakers were installed at 48 hanging points to cover different areas. The largest line array group consists of 14 x KF210, with a projection distance of up to 70 meters from the audience. Through repeated analysis and simulation using Resolution and EASE software, the system has achieved the designed goals.

Because of its location on the seaside with high humidity and salt spray, the IP55 rated KF210 line array and QX***-WP versions were selected due to their ability to handle any weather an audience can withstand. The rigging accessories are also made of aluminum alloy or stainless steel to protect the system from the visible wear of constant use. After the loudspeakers were installed, we encountered the Super Typhoon Doksuri. The maximum wind force in the center was 50 50 m/s when it made landfall 20 kilometers away. The loudspeakers survived because the fly bars in the stadium all use a hard connection frame, which had been designed and tested by mechanical engineers to ensure safety and reliability.

“Overall, we were really pleased with the performance of the sound reinforcement system thanks to the excellent EAW products,” said ZHU Liuwei. “Everything went exactly as we planned, and the delivery and final result have been commended by the client.”

–  ZHU Liuwei, Technical Manager, EZPRO

The solutions for the Phoenix Gymnasium required detailed calculation analysis and EASE simulation. It was determined to use 10 sets of KF210 line arrays as the mains, and 10 x VFS250 subwoofers to optimize the LF response. 44 x CPL1296 are installed in the upper auditorium as reinforcement loudspeakers.

For the tight schedule and heavy workload, EZPro had established a highly skilled technical team, all of which had about 20 years of experience in the industry and previous work designing, installing, and commissioning PA systems in large stadiums. Mr. WU Yinsheng and his design team made extremely detailed drawings of the hanging scheme and construction lines. The technical manager ZHU Liuwei, along with the technical team, completed the initial design and on-site support. Mr. YAN Naiwen and his team were responsible for on-site construction and installation. Mr. ZHENG Lungang supported in the final commissioning of the PA system.

The Phoenix Gymnasium, with a floor area of 155,000 square meters and capacity of 18,000 seats, is one of the largest single gyms in China. The gym has successfully hosted the CBA All-Star game.
