    Te Tōrino Haere Whakamua, Whakamuri: at the same time as the spiral is going forward it is returning

    In the midst of a busy year launching four books in 2026 Witi Ihimaera comes to Rotorua to reflect on his iconic novel, Nights in The Gardens of Spain, published 30 years ago. He will talk with Kevin and Tamati about his current career, look back at Nights, and then look forward to future literature plans.

    • Witi Ihimaera

      Witi Ihimaera

      Witi Ihimaera has published many notable novels, short story collections and nonfiction works, as well as a range of wonderful children's works. His best-known novel The Whale Rider became an international hit film in 2002. Witi has also had careers in diplomacy, teaching, theatre, opera, film and television. He's received numerous awards for his contribution to literature, including the French Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the NZ Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Fiction in 2017. He is currently on a journey to reclaim his reo Māori, which is leading to exciting developments and new highs in his writing.
